I think Walcott needs a change and regular football to thrive again.
I'd see him as a player to play the role Gabby played when MON took over. Right side in a 4-3-2-1 formation with Young the other side of Gabby. The pace would be frightening.

So not so much a chalk on boots winger but a wide forward scaring the shit out of full backs and making direct runs into the box.

Fonz would be in Gabby's role as an alternative. Walcott wouldnt stop him playing.

Can you all find one big room please.

Right, now Walcott is pissed off, lets get a bid in. Wenger might be tempted.
He (Walcott) might be in a frame of mind to try something new.

Not entirely sure. Wenger took a promising striker and turned him into a bobbins winger.

The most frustrating thing about Walcott besides poor delivery, is the fact he doesn't take players on enough. Someone like Aaron Lennon thrives in skinning a fullback, but too often Walcott looks reluctant. Every now and again for Arsenal, and in the one game for England, he'll have a stormer to paper over the cracks, but I just think, having moved to Arsenal and not played so often, he's not developed into nearly the prospect that everyone expected in 06.

He's a decent finisher given a chance, but he's not had the time to learn the game. I also think Arsene will keep him, wht with te new ruling on home grown players coming in. I personally would rather we concentrated on Fonzie.

I think he could be turned into a player playing through the middle a la Gabby.

He's definitely got potential as a front man. But Arsenal would demand silly money for him. I'd not want to spunk pretty much our whole transfer budget on him.

Had he moved to Villa 4 yrs ago, he'd be a top class player by now. It's actually nearly 2 years since his England hattrick.

Although that sounds exciting at first glance, I'd be worried that we'd again be too reliant on pace, which wouldn't  solve our problems at home when teams sit back against us.  A better midfielder might fix that, but would just the addition of Walcott add enough cute movement off the ball to fully benefit from more creative passing?

He started out as a front man. He played a forward role for the U21's and scored a fair few. I've no idea why he's been put on the wing in the last couple of seasons, but it's a waste. He should be going to the World Cup and i'd love him down the Villa.

Getting back to Beckford, where does all this 'he's free so he's worth a punt' mularkey come from?
There is no such thing as a free transfer, the fee would be given to Beckford over the period of a 4 year contract.
He's apparently getting £25,000 per week, so Everton's total outlay is £10.2m!!!

No way is that 'worth a punt'

How much was Harewood?

Exactly. £3.5m and fuck knows how much in wages.

Even Salifou must have cost about £2m in wages.

Harewood was £4.5m, the same as Carew.  He is therefore, our joint most expensive striker.

Carew was a free transfer I think so yep Harewood is our most expensive striker purchased under MON.

Scary.

In the swap with Baros both players were valued at £4.5m.

O'Neill does have a track record of getting rid of people that aren't willing to prove themselves to him (Davis and Cahill being great examples) but that's what he expects from players.  His choice of management style is that he wants every single player to prove they deserve their chance, whether we agree with his assessment in this regarding some players isn't relevant, if MON is anything it's that he's not afraid to back himself.

If you mean players out of the side need to do their upmost in training and those that don't struggle to get back in, you may have a very good point.

Exactly, he just seems like the kind of guy who doesn't take people who are all talk.  If you look at the players who've done well under him anywhere primarily they've all got that run themselves into the ground mentality, I just don't think he goes for players who won't do that.  I also think that, as that's a fairly british attribute, it explains his transfer policy.

With the new ruling coming in re home based players I can say with 99.9% certainty that Walcott won't be moving and certainly not to Villa.

Arsenal barely have any English players as it is. They aren't going to jettison one of the few decent ones they have.

Only way I can see Walcott moving is if the player himself gets pissed off with their rate of progress and angles after a move. But if he does it will be to a club pushing for major honours. Not us, in short.

Actually, from what I can remember, the ruling doesn't say anything about domestic(english) players, it just says you have to have trained them through your academy from the age of 18 or younger.

Given that Wenger made it his policy to buy young foreigners and bring them through the ranks they've probably got near enough to not worry about it.

I'm sure he won't be leaving but I don't think that the above has a lot to do with it.

Under the new rules it doesn't matter how English a player is or isn't, they just have to have their formative training in this country. So the likes of Clichy, Denilson, Diaby, Bendtner, Djourou, Fabianski, Van Persie and Fabregas are just as home-grown as Walcott in the eyes of the new rule.

Ah I see.

Kind of defeats the purpose of having a new ruling on the issue, doesn't it?  If you can still pack out a starting XI with mostly foreigners.

Surely Angel stands ahead in that score? As does Collymore.

Sorry Peter, I meant in terms of the current squad.  We've had a good few strikers who cost more than that, such as Dublin and Balaban as well the players you mentioned.
