perhaps but its going to be 3/4 years before he even approaches the cost of Harewood on transfer fees, let alone wages, and i'm guessing Kenwright is more than willing to let his manager have a punt on lower league talent due to his record

Fair enough he'll cost less that Harewood, but that doesn't mean he'll be any better.

Were I a chairman, and I'm not saying this in a 'defending MON' way, I'd rather pay £4m for a striker, who had scored 16 PL goals the year before last, than get a 3rd tier striker, who's never played there, on a free.

Presuming you mean Beckford and Delph, how is he proven at a higher level?  If anything, Delph had that through U21 games.

And if Beckford was 19 with scope to improve I'd be all for the signing.

Truth is if we'd signed Beckford you'd be saying that we were reduced to signing Division 3 players on a free and using it as reason to have a go.

Those saying Everton signing Beckford was a good bit of business, would you have said so had we bought him?
My arse you would.

u21? don't make me laugh. there's guys playing non-league who have U21 caps. and if players just improved the older they got then we'd all just keep our youth team players indefinitely. i really don't see the problem with beckford on a free. i wasn't against it when we were supposedly interested and if we had a manager who could find bargains in the divisions below i'd be more for it

Most would have said it is a no lose Maz, as he is free and clearly has an eye for goal. If he was our only forward signing then that would not be a good thing.

Fair enough if that's your view, but please explain to us how you think Beckford is proven at a higher level than Delph?

I personally dont think he's a bad player and on a free he is good business for somebody, but if we had signed him this place would have been in uproar. I'm pretty certain of that.

Yes but had we signed him you'd be going on about signing third division players. But we'll never know because, thank fuck, we havent signed him.

well he's proved himself good enough to play in the championship by right. maybe not a higher level yet, but better than delph when we bought him. i'm really not sure why all you HC's are so down on Moyes having a free transfer punt. It normally takes more than this to get MON's personal bodyguards on the case

I think Beckford is a decent signing for Everton, but if we'd got him I think I would have been fairly under whelmed and a little worried that there wouldn't be anybody better coming in to improve our frontline.

Everton, albeit a club on parity with ourselves, are broke and don't have european football next season, so I think Moyes is fishing in a different lake to us this summer, or that's what I'm hoping anyhow!
Beckford may well turn out to be a decent Prem player, but I think that will be because he's playing for Moyes and that's what he's good at. I'm not sure if MON or anyone else for that matter, would get the same out of him.

For me giving young Nathan more exposure next season will turn out to be more beneficial in the long run than taking a calculated risk on a lower league player. I wouldn't be surprised if he takes it upon himself to 'bulk' up a little this summer and I fully expect him to start all the Carling and Europa cup games next season.

I'm not so sure.  If he had been signed in addition to all our other transfers dealings then fair enough; as you say, he's not a bad player and is certainly good business for free.

If he'd formed the centrepiece of our summer signings then uproar would have been wholly justified.

It's all academic though.  Since the Routledge and Salifou signings Martin has seemed disinclined to take much of a punt on anyone, so I think it was pretty unlikely really.
