Well hopefully next year we will play 4-5-1, and Keane would be a good purchase to play in that system. For me he would link better with Gabby than Carew or Heskey. Not at the top of his game, but a proven quality at Prem level. If we paid approx £8m for him, would'nt be a bad buy.If we have a bit more money, which i'm not sure we have, then maybe Zarate.

That's the figure I think of aswell when saying he'd be OK.  Might stretch to £9m, but £10m+ and it wouldn't be worth it!

Not sure on Keane really, what I am certain of is if he did sign I wouldn't be that excited and would be wondering why it didn't happen years ago.

Fascist, 3-goals-in-32 games Zarate?

I'll pass on that thanks.

If I were a betting man, I'd say we'll sign one of Cole, Keane, Bellamy, or Doyle.

Of them I'd prefer Keane, closely followed by bellend. The other two would not make me giddy with excitement (not that any of them are worthy of a cartwheel). Cole will be ludicrously overpriced for so little track record, and Doyle too is nothing special. A grafter, but he'd give us 10 goals maybe, in or around that. Keane could get us 15-20 in all comps, maybe more if he has the same impact Dunne has had.

A 29 year old striker who has just scored his 43rd international goal, sounds alright to me, if he was Colombian people might be a bit keener.

I don't think it's anything to do with the fact that he's Irish.

If he was 26, or if he hadn't just been farmed out to a weak league, then people might be a bit keener.

He's only had 6 months in Scotland but has performed in the Prem and International level for several seasons, I'd prefer him younger but with Gabby and Nathan already there it would be a good balance, with Carew as well

Like I say, I think he can still do some sort of job for us - if the price is right - but it wouldn't be a breathtaking signing and it's not going to move us on massively, in my opinion.

That we're still considering players of that level - and the ones supertom mentions above - kind of makes me think Martin isn't really changing his approach very much.

I think he's going to have to change it a fair bit next season because I reckon City and Spurs are going to be very hard to catch.  And that's without taking Liverpool and Everton into consideration.

This Robbie Keane rumour seems to be growing by the day -

After watching Emile's 15minute cameo performance against Japan .........there's no arguement from me - provided we don't squander more than £7m

Seems weird that John Gregory didn't reckon the guy was worth an extra 500k

My mates in Dublin don't know anymore on the subject

The 500K was on Fergie's advice apparently, he would give us the chance to play someone who's a bit more comfortable playing deeper if need be than Carew, the signing of Carlton Cole would show we are not changing our style of play

Who'd have thought, four years down the line we'd be discussing the merits of Cole, Keane, Bellamy and Doyle.

Smart bit of business by Fergie, that.

At one stage in the season previous we had looked like possible outsiders for  the title and genuine CL contenders (before a collapse in Feb/ March, sound familiar?). The following summer, a young rookie manager at a rival club asks Fergie for advice and Fergie is obviously going to help him out isn't he?

Of course he is.

How much do Sporting want for Veloso this summer Mark? I'd sign him as a Petrov replacement.

You've got a point.

Even though I think Bellamy could certainly do a job for us (although I'll not be convinced by anyone that the likes of Doyle could), I'd prefer us to be looking at better players than that bunch.

How ironic that, four years on, one of the players we're discussing the merits of is someone who'd already played for us in the "dark" period.

I think we've (well most of us) have had our expectations set after four years. Steady, unspectacular is the watchword. Of the above, the fact that Bellamy has the most to give in an edge-of-the-seat way is, well, kind of meh.

And yes, I am in a bleak mood.

They probably want about €20m, he's worth about €5m. He needs a good manager to shake him up and start playing to his potential, week in, week out. He's not for us. The crowd would crucify him, he's so slow he makes Petrov look like Gabby.

I do agree we need to replace Petrov. As much as I like the potential of Delph, he'll be lucky if he kicks a ball next season. The whole midfield will need a rethink if Milner goes but my guess is it will only happen the season after next, when I expect us to have a different manager.

Of those four, Bellamy is the one I would take, I'm afraid - much as I dislike him.
