I don't get it.

Why, when we are on the cusp of the new UEFA "financial fair play" rules, do people think it is a good idea for our billionaire owner to make a profit on transfers this season?

This season and next are the last chance to build our squad value before the new rules kick in.

Villadawg.  Its his money.  I see your point, it is our last chance to pay over the odds for players, and to cash in on over the odds prices.  I like the fact they are trying to increase the capacity at VP, thats one way to increase revenue and turn over to make more money available in the future.  Player prices on the whole will start to get pegged back over the next five years, so you dont want to be the one left holding the shitty stick.

Can't say I know much about the financial fair play rules. Anyone able to give a quick and dirty summary of what their effect is?

I'd put Keane and Benayoun in the same bracket, as players that can come off the bench and make a difference, but not first 11 players.

When you look at what has been sat on the bench or hasn't even played in terms of money, then £8m/£9m for either of these two doesn't seem too bad!

Benayoun's a regular for Liverpool, you really think he wouldn't be a regular in our team?

I'd have him instead of Downing no problem.

They reckon within five years they want all team that want to compete in Champions league and Europa league to live within their means.  As i read it, it concerns player wages and buy prices only, and should be a certain percentage of the turnover.  So big gates, plus sky money plus high season tickets equals biggest hand in the transfer market.  Owners can put some money in, but will not be policed on money they can spend on grounds, training grounds or youth academys.  The phase in gets progressively stricter, so i think the next two years is the last real opportunity for owners to blow big wodges on players.  They also want to improve the fit and proper test.  I think potential owners now have to display they can touch their nose with both their right and left index finger instead of just choosing one.

Bennyihoon is not a regular in Liverpool.  Infact there is only Reina that is one.  Long may it continue

Spot on. According to today's paper that is what Man City are doing. We only have two years to build up a squad capable of competing at the highest level. The thing about this financial fair play lark is that it actually results in a negative effect upon competition.

Clubs like Blues and say Fulham with smaller attendances and hence smaller revenue streams will not be able to compete financially. Clubs like ourselves with decent attendances yet lower ticket prices and less corporate season ticket money are also disadvantaged to a an extent.

Looking at Man City's mooted signings Milner, Arteta and Gago amongst them seem to suggest that many of their current central midfielders like Barry, Viera, Ireland and De Jong may be on the way out.

Isn't there a limit to squad size coming in next season?

Being linked with Behrami in the Mirror, would be a good signing, really like him.

He can cover right back too, albeit a very forward thinking one.

i like the option of behrami, he would be a good rotation player, either as an attacking full back when needed, either as a winger to rest young and downing.

but moreover i would like him to come along with scott parker or carlton cole

Behrami would be very good.

First West Ham link of the summer that I would be happy with.

Shame it's only in the Mirror.

Behrami seems to have been linked with a move to decent clubs for a while. But I can't say I've ever been that impressed. Would much prefer Benayoun, Hleb, or even doing something outrageous like buying someone who hasn't played on these shores yet to give us creativity in midfield

Ireland - part ex milner
Jenas - part ex Davies
Keane - 9m
Carlton Cole - 12m
Clyne - 4m

The thought of three quarters of our major summer activity being Jenas, Keane and Cole just makes me want to weep.

Agreed

Agreed to the power of 'n'
