Would take him for a fee between £5 -8 million.

£12-15 million for Tottingham's fourth choice forward would be funny farm material.

You sign Robbie Keane at 8 million on 60k a week for three years. At the end of the contract he is going to be worth nada aged 32-33. So you have spent 17 million quid on what I reacon to be 30 premier league goals (ten a season). We have bought Young and Milner and saw there value increase surely MON realises this is the right thing to do and will look to invest in Falcoa, Rodellega or Klasnic.

This is the point people overlook.

We tend to just focus on transfer fees without thinking about the wages commitment.

Keane's time has been and gone now. He'll be looking for his last big contract, too, so he won't take low wages happily.

Avoid.

Keane got 6 league goals last season in just over half a season in the Premier League, and loads in the two seasons before.  5 goals is a little bit wrong.

An average of 5 premier league goals a season for the last 3 seasons is actually correct.

And Keane has never scored more than 16 top-flight league goals in a season in his career

No it's not it's wrong, last season he got 6, the season before 10 and the season before 15, how does that average 5???  Plus a shedload in the cups and in Scotland, as I said 60 goals in 3 seasons, 20 per season on average.

Eh?

07/08 - 15 goals
08/09 - 10 goals
09/10 - 6 goals

Even if you're unharitable and say that's 3 seasons rather than 2.5, that's still an average of over 10 goals, not 5.

As for not scoring more than 16 top flight goals, he also hasn't failed to get into double figures since 2002 (apart from last season when he fucked off to Scotland).

Good post Les, but I think you've got the wrong Slav there. I'd go for Kallinic myself.

When did we last have a player score 20 league goals? 25 years ago? Andy Gray?  I don't expect whoever we sign to reach that level, it would be nice, but not easy at all.  I only remember JPA and Yorke breaking 20 in all comps, which was some going, and Keane has done this numerous times over the last few years.

I agree totally with the sentiment, but therein lies the problem. We're trying to get to the Champions League and there's a certain amount of impatience - a proven goalscorer like Keane doesn't come cheap but he (or an established player like him) might - just might - help us leap the next couple of places and make the jump to the next level.

The other option is to what we've been doing, buying younger and less established players and developing them. It's worked to a point, but we've hit a brick wall that we can't get past. This way might work, but if it does, it will take longer. Can we wait that long? While others - City, Spurs - go for option 1 and overtake us?

I'd much prefer us to go for the second option. I have my doubts about Keane, as I've already said. The Villa/O'Neill way so far is the more romantic route to building a team, but while it may get the admiration of some of the broadsheet journalists, it might not be the way to get to where we want to go.

I'd rather have Bellamy than Keane tbh.

That's what I had too (once I corrected last season's five to 6). Averages 10 league goals a season over three seasons, 12 if you average over what he actually played, which is 2.5 seasons. Strictly league only, too. At Liverpool he chipped in with at least a couple in the Champs League.

I'm sure that's how we worked out averages at school, anyway.

I admit I'm no accountant - and I've got no intention of having one of the stupid, drawn-out stat debates that haunt this site -  but just check Keane's league goals for the last 3 seasons from the link I attached.

Am I misreading something there?

Chico, you need to add the 5 he scored for Liverpool in 08-09 to the 5 he scored once back at Spurs in 08-09 to give the 10 figure we've been referring to. Then it becomes 6, 10, 15.
