Ireland tells Man City: I want out of Eastlands - Exclusive

Stephen Ireland has told Manchester City he wants to leave the club.

The Irish midfielder asked to be put on the transfer list when he met City officials during the week to discuss his future after a nightmare season at Eastlands.

City now expect Ireland to put his request in writing after he explained that he feels that only a move away from the Blues will enable him to resurrect his career.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is a big admirer of the 23-year-old, while Liverpool have also been monitoring him.

But his lack of form may force the Cork-born midfielder to lower his sights.

City may offer Aston Villa the chance to include Ireland as a £12million makeweight in a deal for James Milner after having a £20m bid for the England star rejected.

Sunderland will also be interested after coming close to signing the ex-Republic of Ireland international two years ago.

A City source confirmed: “It has been a difficult year for Stephen and he feels that he needs a move to refresh his career.”

Twelve months ago, Ireland was voted City’s player of the year by the supporters after an outstanding season under Mark Hughes.

Hughes had blocked his departure to Sunderland on the eve of the campaign, and Ireland responded by playing a starring role alongside Robinho and Elano.

But after scoring at Blackburn on the opening day of this season he struggled to recapture top form.

Ireland’s slump continued when Hughes was replaced by Roberto Mancini in December. Injury sidelined him during the run-in, when City failed to secure a top-four place.

But it was unlikely Mancini would have picked Ireland anyway after hinting that his lack of form was down to his mental attitude.

City are hoping Villa will show an interest after signing fellow Irishman Richard Dunne last season.

Martin O’Neill is loath to allow Milner to make the same journey up the M6 taken by Gareth Barry last summer, but he may regard Ireland as an unpolished diamond.

City will wait until Milner has spoken to Villa this week before making a second bid.

Villa are ready to offer him a contract worth £70,000 a week, but if Milner gives them any encouragement to make a second bid it will be pitched at £23m.

ASTON VILLA fancy Valencia pair Nikola Zigic and Miguel.

Boss Martin O'Neill is ready to bid £9.5million for the duo as the Spanish club need to pay debts by June 30.

Serbian striker Zigic and Portuguese defender Miguel have deals until next summer but O'Neill hopes to get them on the cheap.

Valencia will be willing to negotiate if the full fee is paid up front and in cash.

Zigic, 29 and 6ft 7in, was loaned to former club Racing Santander in 2009 and regained form with 13 goals in 19 games.

Villa look certain to lose either John Carew or Emile Heskey - or possibly both hitmen.

Miguel, 30, has 52 caps for Portugal and Villa want a right-back replacement for Luke Young, who is set to leave.
The defender has been named in Carlos Queiroz's provisional 30-man Portugal squad for next month's World Cup in South Africa

Bloody hell those two have been linked with us so many times over the last 3 years.

The thought occurred to me, while watching The Big Cup final this evening, that we were once linked with Sneijder,  and Van Bommel.

The British media are really starting to piss me off now - At what point did Aston Villa introduce a player scrappage scheme? dump your old crap on us and we'll happily exchange them for a shiny new England midfielder! We can take our pick of Man City reserves, Tottenham failures and other selected journeymen as long as they are over 30 - and it always comes the close/reliable source.

Is this close reliable source the same source? If so can we find this idiot that tries to bring our club down every summer and burn them in the centre circle before the first home match.

Today's source says Milners preferred destination is Liverpool FFS - They couldn't afford a temp toilet cleaner let alone 25 million and 100k a week.

Fifteen million pounds for Robbie Keane?

Surely not.

My thoughts exaclty. I'd be happy to get him in but not at that price and I certainly don't want to lose Carew

We should offer £15m for Keane and Bentley.

Get Ireland as part of the Milner deal and we'll be a better team.

I think the Zigic, Miguel, Keane links are all just lazy journalism.

You look at MONs spending records, he only normally pays a lot of money for young up and coming players, not on players nearing 30.

Can't see how Keane is valued at £15m, would have him for £5m.

Miguel, never been that impressed when i have seen him, would prefer Onohua tbh.

Zigic, is'nt a bad player tbh, might fall into the stereotypical MON kind of player, but in my eyes, certainly as good a player as Crouch.Whether we need another player like this is questionable, alongside Carew and Heskey would leave us a bit one dimensional..would like a Forlan/Kanoute kind of player.

Message to Paul. It's transfer speculation, not a direct stream from Martin O'Neill's conscience.

All of it is lazy journalism. They have to fill the papers with something during the off season months and we all know it. Yet, every year froth at the mouth at the stuff that is written. If you're still that green to read, digest and believe it then you deserve the aneurysm that's coming your way.
