Milner will go in the next 2 years and this although gut wrenching is not the end of the world. He is a top player, and great lad, but our central midfield were still off the pace last season. Granted alongside De Jong and Barry he wll be phenomenal, but were I O'Neill I would be asking for Ireland, Richards and 18 million ish. Right back sorted, replacement for Milner signed, and 18 million in the bank. If they won't pay, tell them to do one.

Cole certainly fits the bill for MON, English and over priced.

Ireland is hardly a replacement for Milner. A player to play with him, sure.
I'd still tell them to do one regardless. Or, unless the offer is ridiculous and too good to refuse. £30m is a lot of money but its not too big to refuse.

Lets just buy Richards and Ireland who they might be looking to move on anyway and keep Milner.

I'd prefer we sign Carlton Palmer than Carlton Cole.

Cole as a replacement for Heskey would be a significant improvement but I understand folk wanting better.

Precisely. We should be looking to improve on our best players not the worst.

If we sign Cole we may as well pack it in.

Surprised the Bentley stories havn't resurfaced by now. Not that we need him, but 'Arry must be looking to sell this summer surely?

He's a good player. If they arent looking for a fortune he'd be worth a look at.

I'd be reasonably happy with signing Carlton Cole; he's better than Heskey as others have said, and he seems to be improving. Worth a try, I'd say.

I'd also be very pleased with signing Bentley - especially if Milner leaves. With MON's insistence on playing to the wings, we might as well play Bentley and Young in their best positions (with Downing as cover, although I maintain he's a very good left winger) and shore up the centre midfield.

Milner may well have been good there - although I honestly don't think he's been as amazing there as some would have us believe - but I think there are alternatives who may be more suited in that role for our team's style.

He's had a good 2nd half of the season to be fair. He's not first choice there, but has done well when he's come in.

Harry may get Joe C, and that would spell the end for Bentley at Spurs I'd guess. I'd rather have Cole in all honesty, but don't see us paying the wages he'd want.

I think he'd be a useful addition. Let him and Downing fight it out for a place, and hopefully between the two of them, they will not fall into any complacency. It does look like Bentley is now settling down and working harder on his football and not his night time activities.

Well we either start paying the wages that players like Joe Cole want or we don't get them and remain forever sixth. It's not rocket science, the best players command the biggest wages.

Carlton Cole? I'd just like to see us sign a striker who's main facet isn't either 'speed' or 'strength'. Like, say 'intelligence' or something. Something a bit different.

If we are looking for a goalscorer (and I hope we are) we could do a lot worse than enquire about Klasnic at Bolton. SUperb finisher and well within the price range I would imagine

I idea for getting Joe Cole:-

Say he's after £100k a week and we're only prepared to offer £60k.  That's £40k a week difference, which over a 3 year contract would be £6.24m.  Given that he'd probably pick up £1m in signing on fees anyway, why not offer him a HUGE signing fee of £7.5m.  That way, our other players wouldn't be knocking on the door asking for parity on their wages, it might appeal to Cole as he'd get the cash upfront and if we were told we'd get a player like Cole for a £7.5m transfer fee we'd jump at the chance!

All we'd need to do is tie in a but out clause to his contract of say £10m, similar to those we see in Spain, so we'd be able to recoup our initial outlay if he moved on.

I know things don't work like that in the real world, and this would only work if a CL club did not come in for him, but I'd like to see us at least try for him!
