Greg, I forgot scoring in certain competitions is easier/more important than others!  You obviously do not want us to do as well in the competitions that we have a chance of winning compared to the one we don't, how bizarre.  I've not touched the figures, I'm just using the goals the guy has scored, your the one massaging the figures by removing certain goals.

Ok forget Scotland, 06/07 he scored 22, 07/08 he got 23 and 08/09/1st half of 09/10 he got 21, granted not as good, but an average of 14 over 1 season, still nearly 3 times greater than the strike rate of the player I'm suggesting he replaces.

so your looking for a striker who scores in the cups? well ok, i just hope thats not MON's criteria.

and you'd struggle to find a striker who hasn't got a better strike rate than Heskey.  Doesn't mean we should sign them.

I want the Villa to win all matches they play in and not just the league, many of our greatest moments have been in the cups down the years.  I find it sad that people are happy to ignore cup success to ensure a decent league position, finishing 2nd/3rd/4th/5th/6th isn't what sport is all about for me, it's winning trophies.

What if we ended up like Fulham next season, mid table, but in the Europa League final, we'd be screwed if we brought one of your league goalscorers if such a thing existed, we get a few extra league points and finish 9th or whatever, but lose the final.

I just don't think players perform better or score more in certain competitions due to anything other than coincidence.  For instance, I feel Gabby has as good a chance of scoring against Man U at Old Trafford in the league than he does against a lower league side in the cup.

Sorry pedro, i take your point but i don't agree. 80+m plus building a good cup side seems a poor return to me.

It's a bit too early to call ourselves a good cup side (whichever way you're looking at it - as a positive or as a "that's not good enough" thing).

We've had two good cup runs this season, preceeded by six shit ones (plus the EL ones).

I don't aspire to be just a good cup side, or believe we necessarily are, I just don't find analysing which competitions strikers score in as being indicative of their worth.

If Keane or any striker scored 20 a season regularly, then they have a good chance of doing it again, but whether they all come in the league or are shared between the competitions is in my opinion purely down to chance.

In fairness, should you score a disproportionate amount of goals in the cups, it may be down to the standard of opposition, which isn't as easily guaged as if you score your goals in the league.  Cup goals shouldn't be discounted, but league goals should be paid more attention, IMO.

I agree to some extent John, but this can work both ways, if a guy is scoring for fun in the league but not in the cups, despite playing a poorer standard of opposition then there's something not right with that either.

Strikers have to score goals in all competitions, therefore their records in all competitions should be considered.

bottom line is we scored 17 goals less than the weakest CL team. couldn't give an arse about how many goals someone scores against Darlington in the cup or on a 3 month retirement trip to scotland.

I get your point, but it's actually 15 - we scored 52 and Spurs 67.  I think that would be largely addressed by the better home form we all know we need, so it's more a symptom than it is the actual problem!

But surely you would give an arse Greg if said striker didn't score against Darlington and it meant we got knocked out of the FA Cup in the 3rd round for example.  Surely our biggest games for the last 10 years have been the FA/CC semis and finals.

Would a Man U fan say I don't care how many goals Rooney scores in the Champions League knock out stages away to Inter and Barca, I'm only interested in how many he scores in our annual romp at Wigan?  Some league games are more important than others, and it's the same with the cups.

Well there must be something wrong with me, because i am quite looking foward to the transfer window.
I know it sounds stupid, but we are not that far away.Whatever we have as a transfer kitty,if we bought the right 2 players we would turn games like yday into 3 points quite easily.

Now , might not be a gettable target atm, but a top player, who hasn't really been linked to anyone, and apparently is available, is Fabiano at Seville, getting on a bit, but might fancy it, they also have a very good right sided RB, RM, Brazilian player, cant remember his name.

Might be heresy to say, but Dunne was very good yday as well.

Why would saying that the Players' Player Of The Year played well be heresy? Assuming you didn't mean 'hearsay' or 'horseplay' or something else.

And Fabiano has been linked with Man Utd. For far more money than we'll be spending on anybody.
