I think our squad will be smaller next season, but hopefully with better options. IMO We can lose 4 full backs and bring in 2, let Davies go, as Clark is coming through, let Marlon and Heskey go and bring in 1 quality striker, let NRC, Sidwell, Ozzie, Salifou go and bring in 2 quality replacements, one who can play wide also.

This is it for me!  More quality and less quantity can see us have a better and more used squad.

Yep. Options that arent used are not options at all. The vaunted academy/reserve players can make up numbers. Quality rather than quantity is the order of the day now as far as transfers are concerned. We could easily lose 10 players this summer, replace them with 5 or 6 and be far stronger.

True, as a rough guess I'd say,

Out:
Harewood - free
Bouma - free
Osbourne - 0.5mill
Salifou - free
Marshall - free
Beye - 1 mill
Shorey - 2 mill
Heskey - 2 mill
Reo Coker - 4 mill
Sidwell - 3 mill
Davies - 5 mill
L Young - 3.5 mill
total - 21 mill

In
Clyne - 4 mill
Westwood - 4 mill
Manolev - 3 mill
Diame - 8 mill
Bentley - 8 mill
Keane - 8 mill
 total - 35 mill

Could always leave the new keeper for 1 more yr if funds are tight.

I'd rather keep Reo Coker and Davies but if they are deemed surplus, so be it.

In which case, I'd like to see come in:

Ireland - £10m
Kallstrom - Free.
Richards - £7m
Clyne - £3m
Dzeko - £18m
plus 6p for a celebratoty slap up binge at Mrs Miggins' pie shop.

Net spend roughly £18m. Which the new sponsorship deal should help cover. I dont even think there are financial problems either so that shouldn't be a problem. So maybe another winger as I'm being greedy.

If we spent £8m on Keane we'd want fucking.

He should be sent to the same glue factory as Carew.

I would get Peter Whittingham back from Cardiff. He has scored two belters lately and would be a great replacment for Downing if we can get rid of him.

Keane has scored 20 plus goals in 3 of his last 4 seasons.  8 mill is hardly extortianate for a 29 yr old striker with a proven record like his, we had to spend that on a 3rd division player last summer.

I have faith that Downing, like Milner this season, will be like a new signing.  If I was to get in one player, it would be a robust, ball winning midfielder, Essienlike.  Parker would enhance his England chances playing in our midfield.

league record
06-07  11goals
07-08  15goals
08-09 10 goals
09-10  18goals*

*warning, total contains SPL goals

i take it your including all competitions to push these totals up and also you're taking his tally north of the border seriously? the reality is he's shite, redknapp knows he's shite, and thats why he's hoping some idiot will go "oh look he's scored 16 goals in 19 games for Celtic, he must be good". And i think we all know what idiot he has in mind.

I'd take the current Whittingham over the current Downing in a heartbeat.

Really?

Whittingham has had an excellent season in the Championship, but it has been in the Championship.  He always had talent, even when he was with us, and his crossing was excellent - but he always seemed a little lightweight (and to use the same criticism Downing gets, would score quite high on the Wussometer).

I said in another thread that I'd be interested to see how he'd get on if he got his chance in the top flight again - but to suggest you'd swap him for Downing is a little silly in my opinion.

If we really want to push on from 6th, and we were to replace Downing, it would need to be with a hell of a lot better than Whittingham.

Downing offers us no more than Whittingham would.

Although I'd agree that what he scores in Scotland shouldn't be used as a barometer, I also think his recent goal tallies should be reflected with games as he hardly featured at Liverpool and then 'arry didn't fancy him when he came back to Spurs.  He's not a 20-a-season man, but the type of forward he is that can come deeper and link play is something that would benefit us, plus he has the ability to score in tight games, which our present strikers lack.

Not my first choice, but he is certainly not shite and only signed by idiots.

You might be right (I'm not convinced, however), but that is most certainly the worst possible basis for a transfer.

maybe not shite but he's 30 in july. do we really want another 30+ striker who as you recognise will never get the goals we need? I'm perhaps a little more  against him as its obvious redknapp is doing the old horse racing trick of entering a nag in a much lower class race in the hope that after he wins by 5 lengths the offers will come streaming in

Greg, I forgot scoring in certain competitions is easier/more important than others!  You obviously do not want us to do as well in the competitions that we have a chance of winning compared to the one we don't, how bizarre.  I've not touched the figures, I'm just using the goals the guy has scored, your the one massaging the figures by removing certain goals.

Ok forget Scotland, 06/07 he scored 22, 07/08 he got 23 and 08/09/1st half of 09/10 he got 21, granted not as good, but an average of 14 over 1 season, still nearly 3 times greater than the strike rate of the player I'm suggesting he replaces.
