Somebody said to me that we'd had Defour watched.

When?

He told me yesterday.

I thought he was still injured?

He is.
But we have a team of scouts that cover the medical centres and hospitals.

hopefully we will keep nrc and he will get a go next season. Realistically, midfield targets id like to see us try and get would be etherington from stoke and scott parker.

Another potentially good target would be chris eagles from burnley. i thought he was class this season....

Sorry, but that's not realism - it's the minimum standard at best!

Realistic targets are, IMO, the likes of Stephen Ireland.

I think Scott Parker could be a great shout. Expereienced PL player who is very much in his prime. You wonder how his career could have gone if (1) He hadn't been so unlucky with injuries (2) He had stayed with Charlton a bit longer...the Chelsea move didnt do him much good, to much of a jump at that stage.

I remember being at our game against Charlton in the Valley in 2003 when they beat us 3-0 (dark days indeed). Parker was unbelievable that day.

Eagles and Etherington could be the type of player we go for if financial constraints at the club are as reported.  Now Milner is the fulcrum of our central midfield I don't think we can go an entire season with only Downing and Young as the two options for the 2 wide midfield roles, we need 4 options imo.  I would accept Albrighton could step up and be one of these but we certainly need another.  Money needs to be spent on a forward or two and a Parker type player centrally to share Petrov's workload, so we might not be able to spend another £12 million on a wideman, especially as he will probably only be a cover player.  In that case, whilst I would love someone like Collison, maybe Eagles or Etherington would not be a bad shout.

Don't understand the clamour for Parker. He's barely a year younger than Petrov and would cost top dollar because of who's selling. If we MUST buy an English midfielder from the premier then we should see if the Carrick for sale rumours are true. You could build a team round him and Milner

I don't want either player, but you do make a compeliing argument regarding the possible funds issue.  But if that was the case I'd then prefer to not get the Parker-type and use NRC, so we had that extra cash to buy A N Other attacking midfielder to rotate with Milner, Ash, Downing and hopefully Albrighton.

Carrick is a waste of space. He's so overrated it beggars belief. All he does is pass the ball to the nearest man whether he is marked or not. He doesnt work hard, he doesnt score many, he never runs with the ball. You have to hide him amongst better players. He is a poor mans Ray Wilkins.

His saving grace is that he is a good passer. It makes him seem a better player than he is. Parker, although he's approaching the last phase of his career has more to offer us than Carrick.
Carrick is literally as good as the players around him whereas Parker can affect a game more proactively.

You could replace the name 'Carrick' and slide in 'Petrov', into that post Maz.

That said I think Carrick is a brilliant player, yes he passes the ball simple, but the difference is he moves after he has passed it and then wants it back. None of our players ever seem to do this.

Apart from the bit about not working hard. And the overrated bit.

Which Petrov is a waste of space, is overrated, only passes to the nearest man, doesn't work hard or run with the ball and has to be hidden by better players, that's certainly not our skipper mate.

I agree Carrick can pass, which it why he wouldn't have to run round like a blue-assed fly in our midfield like petrov.  A season playing our midfield style and Parker would be as thraped-out as Petrov.

I don't see any great difference in Carrick to Petrov to be honest:-

Both sit back behind the play, are always available for a pass and pass it well themselves.  Neither create or score too many and lack any real pace or power to allow them truely boss a game.

We'd be swapping like for like, IMO!

So exactly would do the running then Greg?

And as Petrov is at the very least Carrick's equal in terms of passing ability I don't really see how replacing a hard-working Petrov with a lazy Carrick is going to help anybody other than our rivals and Man Utd.
