Everyone is going to get linked to City.

Ignore it.

Failing to get into the Champions League will make it harder every season to fend off suitors for our players, unfortunately.

Correct.

But last season we lost Barry and Laursen and I don't think we're that worse off (if at all).

That may be the case, but we'd struggle to replace Milner and Young.

Do you serioulsy think that we will?

I'd be very surprised if we did this summer. I'm pretty confident that they'll view this as a positive season so will be happy to stay and the manager has said he is under no pressure to sell. If we don't continue to progress then next year might be a different matter.

I didn't say we will, but that we would would struggle if we had to replace them.

FWIW, I don't think we'll have that issue with Milner this season, and probably not Young (though not quite so sure on that one).

Incidentally, you imply we've continued to progress, but it looks as if we're going to finish more or less where we were last year and the season before.

As supporters we might see consolidation as progress, but I doubt players see it in the same way.

We have.

With 4 games to go we're still in with a shout for 4th place and we've been to 1 cup final and a semi in the other. That's an improvement on last season.

On the plus side (although it's again from one of the rags)

Quote
Wigan striker Hugo Rodallega is set to snub a move to the Premier League's elite as he feels he has a better chance of playing by joining a team outside the top four.

Yoohoo, Hugo.  Over here sir.

Well, it depends how things are at the end of the season, but my point was that regardless of how we see it, the players will see it differently - they're not fans, they're banking their careers on it. Ashley Young will have been here three years and finished 6th three times, for example.

I'd imagine his criteria for how he evaluates progress are entirely different to ours.

I don't think they're all that different, trying to win things and to play in the CL* are what we all want. If this time next season we're still in a broadly similar place then I think we'll have a fight on our hands, this year my gut felling is that they'll want to stay.

*Although I can't be alone in disliking so much about the CL that I'm not sure how much I really want us to be in it.

Or rather, he isnt wanted by any of the top three (the 4th place is still to be decided). He looks good every now and then but I'm not yet convinced by him.

I agree, we'll probably be ok this summer (the only potential spanner being someone like Man City waving huge pay rises at them).

We all want the same, but we're obviously going to be waiting as long as it takes, as we're Villa fans for better or worse. They're not, and they're staking a chunk of their careers on it, was the point i was flailing around for.

No doubt about it, it is a pretty revolting spectacle which has done real damage to the domestic game. It's still better to be in it than out of it, though, obviously.

You're right, the Champions League and Sky have fucked football over, but while we're a part of it, we might as well get on with being the best we can.  Until the glorious revolution happens and we go back to players not earning twice as much in a week as most people do in a year, we just have to like it or lump it, sadly.

You're not. I want what's best for Villa and if its to be in this competition, so be it. But I dont watch it anymore apart from apart from the odd 20 mins here and there. Its a bloated monstrous nonsense.
