The scouting system could be brilliant but unless they've appeared in a World Cup or been metaphorically arse-kissed on

No one knew who James Collins was before he came to Villa. But in 6 months he is a fans favourite ???

Right, until we have our name on a striker, Carew dont go anywhere.  When you look to the bench, you look for players that can come on and score, or make an impact, or make the opposition defence worry.  Carew has all of that, even today.  Im more than happy for the management to sign below the radar players, cost needs to be kept in check.  I would hate us to qualify for the chumps league and then lose the position on a UEFA S Twatter technicality as our costs were to high compared to our turn over.

Not too sure whether this point is backing my assertion up or not, but when we bought Collins proves exactly how many fans on here will slag off a player we know nothing about because he's not a "name". Everyone went 'who he?' and started banging on about how we couldn't sign a decent replacement for Laursen...eight months later we've all forgotten that at the time, it was seen as a step backwards to sign a West Ham defender because he turned out to be such a bargain.

I would like a goalkeeper who comes off his line and catches crosses instead of hollering 'away' how many goals have we conceded from people heading the ball into our net from less than four yards with the bloody keeper rooted to his line waving his arms and shouting 'away' as if it was some kind of bloody voodoo  I can shout 'away' and watch a ball whizz past me into a net and I've got short hair we'd be top of the league for fuck's sake.

I might be wrong on this, but haven't we only conceded two headed goals this season and one of those was only on Tuesday.

I'm a bit peturbed by the GK thing to be honest. Before we played Blackburn in the cups I had no doubt as to Guzan's suitability to fill Firedel's boots but now...is he the man for the job? Simply because he seems crap at set pieces.

Shows how much I know. I thought it was loads.

I'd still like a goalkeeper with longer hair though. Bit like Jimmy Rimmer to tell the truth.

Mutter mutter.

I still dont get the fuss about Guzan's form. He's a good keeper, he will be a fine keeper. I understand the need for another one as Marshall is just an interim and Friedel is getting on but I personally have no worries over Guzan.

Friedel can play another year as first choice tbh, in great shape and had a very solid season. Guzan had a couple of disappointing Blackburn games but shouldn't be written off as a future number one.

Review the goalkeeping situation the summer after this one.

I think that's far from certain.  He's an excellent shot stopper, but most keepers are.  The ones that really stand out are the ones who just have an air of confidence about them, and in whom their defenders have confidence.

Guzan had had one or two dodgy moments prior to the League Cup run but nothing serious.  But then it quickly became clear that he had a weaknesses with crosses and corners.  It was very quickly exploited and that seemed to affect his confidence.

He may well get the confidence back and may well be able to work on the crosses thing but at the moment he's got a lot of work to do.  As we've got Andy Marshall on the books it might be worth letting Brad Jr go out on loan.  I think a spell in a lower division would quickly show whether his problem with crosses was just a blip or is something more serious.

I think Guzan wouldn't go out on loan now - he's far too established as our number two (like Delfouneso wouldn't go out on loan even though he hardly plays) but there are no signs Big Brad is going to retire this summer and I'd be satisfied if he stayed as our first choice next year.

But I can't see many of you lot being happy if we bought a striker from League One called John Smith or a Bolivian called Hector Sanchez that we've never heard of because from previous experience, unless they'll obviously be a success in the top division, everyone will say we're lacking ambition to bid for top-class palyers.

Perhaps.

But I don't think many would complain if we'd had a relatively unknown forward making the kind of impact in C& B Rodellega has made.

Ultimately it's all about what they do on the pitch for us. Not where they have come from, how much they cost et.c. Those might be indicators as to a certain level of achivement already arrived at, but thats all they are.

Lets not gorget that this 'impact' is 11 goals in 49 games for Wigan!
