Kevin Doyle! Quality player who I think would play well with gabby, plus with our finances he would be cheap and gettable.

I asked my Wolves mate what he thought of him, he said

'He's a hard worker, put's himself about, but he's no goalscorer and he's not good enough for a top half of the Premier team and certainly not good enough if you want to break into the top 4.'

I bet that took a while to translate.

I put it back through the Yo'amspeekin' engine and this what it come up with.

"'Look ya, 'im grafta, but im dey score an 'im now good enough fer top arf Premya tame and im ay goodnuff if yome break the top 4 ay it. If yow buy im, yo'am grizzlin'"

Was translating from the Yo`amspeekin` engine and my misses walked in and thought i had gone Wonky !!!!!

Some depressing names being put forward on here. Doyle ffs...... Once, just once, i'd like us to sign someone who'd genuinely make people sit up and take notice.

What does it matter if people take notice when we sign them. I don't care how much they cost, what nationality they are, even if I've heard of them or not. I want people to take notice after they start playing for us, like they did with Gabby, Milner, Dunne and Young. If we can find another four who make similar contributions, we'll be laughing, even if they come from the reserves.

the time for players like Doyle is long passed. if you think we're near to 4th place, then the next level has arrived. if you could trawl round picking up promising youngsters and decent club players and compete, then the likes of man united and chelsea would be doing it. An established and probably expensive striker to compliment and challenge gabby is what is needed

I have to say that I agree with Greg. Doyle is a decent player and would be a good bench option for us, but nothing else. If we have aspirations of Top 4, we need to be buying that calibre of player.

I think he'll go for Bellamy (if City don't come fourth, of course).

Just two major targets this summer, a third if he goes for a goalkeeper.

I can see Bellamy being a target and that's fine by me. Bellamy and Carroll to replace Heskey and Carew. Yep, no worries. They'd actually be a nasty and effective double act upon occasion too.

Id sign a young skilful promising striker and ditto midfielder.  Luckily I think we have that in Fonz and Delph.  Joe Hart would be the Goalie I signed.  Not impressed with the Doyle suggestion im afraid, although his ability to withstand a "Beast" headbutt was truly great

With MONs style of play I would disagree with that tbh mate. A player with good movement, natural finishing and ability to get on the end of crosses is what we need and I would pretty much class that as a "poacher".

Coincidently, I think Defoe would have been the perfect signing for MON last season.

I disagree completely, because if you put a 'poacher' in that team instead of Heskey/Carew, you sacrifice a lot of possession in the midfield, and if you put one in instead of Gabby then you sacrifice that front-running which is so necessary not only on the counter-attack, but for forcing defences deeper to give our midfield a little bit more space to play.

In all fairness I dont think you understand what I mean to be a modern day poacher (which generally means a natural finisher who will have the movement and intelligence to be at the end of the crosses that our wingers supply). I also dont think Heskey/Carew contribute anything more than what their replacement would do anyway outside the box. As I have also stated, I think Gabby could be nurtured into our "poacher"...he just needs to learn better movement and be clinical with his finishing.

I've always liked the two "Polish" strikers Klose and Podolski.

Ask yourself who would you rather partner Gabby? Doyle or Heskey?
I only say Doyle if we don't make CL, let's wait till Saturday and see how he plays.

Depends entirely on where we finish.

If we get 4th I expect all concerned at the club to take advantage of the new avenues that will have opened up for us in terms of who we could get.

Because not only will we trying to stay in the CL as long as possible but we'll also be in another long battle to qualify for it again.

It would be absolutely heart-breaking to get 4th and then go out in the Qualifying Round, or whatever stage we enter the tournament.

Spot on.   4th would mean we get a shout of attracting quality names. I would say thats about 1 in 4 likely as its going to tight very tight.  I would still sell 3/4 of the squad and raise about c£12m to add the kitty.  A midfielder and proven/up and coming overseas striker is essential.

Mon will never change his style of play, with two wingers you need a target man. So to replace Carew and Heskey I'd go for someone who holds the ball up well, has good control on the floor and has good movement, We will never get World Class so Peter Crouch it is and I reckon he would score loads with the service from Downing, Milner & Young.

Hugo Rodellega - Wigan - 11m

Or 15m, apparently.

Hugo Rodallega wanted by Aston Villa: Martin O'Neill enters chase for £15m-rated Wigan hitman

Martin O’Neill is entering the battle to sign Wigan’s £15m-rated Hugo Rodallega.

Aston Villa’s chief scout Ian Storey-Moore will check on the Colombian but they face competition from Birmingham and Stoke.

Sunderland and Liverpool are also interested in the 24-year-old, who has scored eight times in the Barclays Premier League this season - including the winner against Liverpool (below).

Villa continue to track West Bromwich star Graham Dorrans.
