I don't see O'Hara and Doyle improving us at all, they are not as good as our first choice players in those positions and I don't think they are any better than our back ups, Carew, Delph etc.

Personally, i'd much prefer Doyle and O Hara in the squad than Heskey and Sidwell, and feel that if that were the case our 18 would be improved. In fairness, Doyle would probably start. Lets be honest, Carew has been very hit and miss this season if you take it overall rather than just the last game.
But as i said originally, we would need better still to give us a decent chance of Champions League qualification.

Darren Bent's goal record

Years Team Apps† (Gls)†
2001–2005 Ipswich Town 122 (47)
2005–2007 Charlton Athletic 68 (31)
2007–2009 Tottenham Hotspur 60 (18)
2009– Sunderland 28 (18)

Compared with Agbonlahor

Years Team Apps† (Gls)†
2005– Aston Villa 146 (44)

Compared with Heskey
2009– Aston Villa 35 (5)

I know who I'd rather have paired with Agbonlahor

If its a straight choice between Heskey and Bent then I'd agree with you.  But I'm not convinced Bent and Gabby would be a good pairing.

My reasoning is much better explained by Jonathan Wilson (who has done some good stuff on his blog):

Apologies for the long link:

O'Hara for one.

Every time I'v eseen him play he's been inspirational.

I'd rather him that this season's Petrov to be honest.

So:

Quality goallkeeper
O'Hara
Bent

That's what I'd be looking at if I was MON.

Jow Art
Micah Richards
Scott Parker
Lee, the Korean at Bolton
Kevin Doyle.

Sidwell, Salifou, Hare, Ozzy, Shorey, to go. Maybe Curtis and NRC too if we need the money.

I just spent a few minutes reading your post and wondering "who the fuck is Jow Art". Then it sank in

Do you think Doyle is what we need up front to crack the top four?

Midfield - Hernanes
Striker - Cardozo

May cost about £25m for the pair but that's what I reckon we need to spend to really move us on from where we are.

I quite like that Lee at Bolton as well Perce.

Not sure about Richards, lacks a brain sometimes.Still think the lad Walker will be a very good RB.

Another central aggresive defensive midfielder for me needed.Ethutu at Fulham?

  Piqione at Pompey?

If we get in the CL, then completely different targets.

OUT: Davies, Shorey, Beye, Nige, Osbourne, Salifou, Sidwell, Harewood.

I'd say that'd be about £18million made in sales and £10million for next season off the wage budget.

IN: Micah Richards, Jean Makoun, Jack Collison, Graham Dorrans, Steven Fletcher.

I'd say that lot would cost around £25-30million.

Then try and shift one or both of Carew/Heskey and try and get a top quality replacement. Move them both on and it's 100k a week off the wage budget and around £8-10million.

I'd like us to look at the likes of Berbatov, Llorente, Boriello, Santa Cruz, Anelka, Gilardino. But my money is on it being Carlton Cole.

I know it's a dreamworld but I can dream, can't I?

I'm not sure he'd be the difference between us getting there and not. Along with the continued progression of Milner, Gabby, Young and Delph, maybe. I do think he's got a bit of class and he'll be at a big club next season, and I hope it's us.

Doyle & O'Hara would be ok signings to keep us in the position that we are now 5-8th place and maybe a Cup run again.
To challenge for the 4th postion we need to invest in 2 or 3 players with higher quality and that will cost serious money.

NEW CENTRAL MIDFIELDER AND STRIKER.

Sorry to shout but it just sticks out like a sore thumb game after game.

Then we might also have some plan b options off the bench also.
