Things seem to be picking up. With Heskey, Luke, Bouma and Harewood gone that should be a good £160k per week off the wage bill and £5million ish in the kitty. Plus Gardner's 20k and £3million.

We might be able to get a couple in before the start of the season now.

I think there is a difference, Mark. Obviously we can't afford to be quite as ruthless as Liverpool were in the 70s, they could sign anyone and we can't. However, there is a difference between Luke and the players you've listed, because Luke's game was based largely on his underrated pace, as it's what would save him when he's caught out of position. As he's losing some of that, his game suffers massively. None of the players you've listed there have lost such a key component of their game like that - indeed, with Petrov and Dunne, their reading of the game, already a strength, has improved with age.

Another thing the Sunderland fans will have to brace themselves for if they buy our fourteen stone of somnambulating incompetence is that he has no boots.   My son bought them on the last game of last season in the Sale Tent.   If he is not to play barefoot (which could be an option) he will need a new pair and they don't come cheap.   Stainless steel ball bearing wheels all round.

Will Sunderland be offering Emile a rolling contract, or just a stumbling and falling contract?

I don't think i've ever been this excited about a player leaving before, this had better not be a wind-up.

It's not worked out at Villa so a move would be the best for all concerned.

I always thought Young wanted to go down south after the tradegy with his brother to be near family ( according to papers and gossip)  , so I was expecting to go to a Fulham or Westham. What a load of rubbish that was then.

I'd say Luke Young got fed up of playing at left back or sitting on the bench. Can't say I blame him at all. I hope we don't regret this but have a feeling we will.

As for Heskey.... I can barely contain the excitement!

I would have said Luke was fed up with playing left-back, but I cannot see where else he is going to play other than left-back for the Scousers as they have Glen Johnson at right back.

I hope that the truth comes out one way or another once this transfer is completed, the fall from grace of Luke Young at Villa Park has been one of the biggest mysteries since Ivo Stas

Heskey - glad he's (supposedly) going.  Anyone now a potential fee?

Luke Young - that's a difficult one!  For all our talk of Cuellar at right back and him playing on the left, he was a 1st team regular in 08/09 and not last season, with his brother sadly passing away in between.  I just can't help the feeling that there is something going on behind the scenes we do not know about with this one!

I - indeed, with Petrov and Dunne, their reading of the game, already a strength, has improved with age.

Petrov offers us nothing now, apart from watching the game pass him by as he reads it.He would not get into any of the top eight sides.Lets hope he gets his move to Fulham or Bolton.

It's a shame because he was better at left back than he was on the right.
