Three persistent rumours that excite me and have the MON stamp all over them are Witsel, Bentley and Ireland.

If we could get Bentley back to his Blackburn form and Ireland back to his 08/09 form then we would be a much better team than this season.

I like the look of:

-----------------Brad snr-----------------
Young----Cuellar------Dunne---Warnock
-----------Witsel--------Petrov------------
-----Bentley----Ireland----Young--------
------------------Gabby-------------------

Some strength in depth with Carew, Delph, Downing, NRC, Collins, Davies etc all in the wings.

Alternatively a few of the "deadwood" could leave to open up some spaces in the squad.

If we could sign those three we would have some squad and a great midfield. If we can hang on to Reo Coker as back up then so much the better.

I don't think we are likely to sign either Ireland or Witsel though. It's just a feeling.

EDIT: And as John M suggests Witsel and Ireland would work as a two so we have flexibility with Carew, Delfoueso and if we sign him Keane to come in for one of the defensive midfield players.

I think Ireland IS likely and Bently a possibility, but Witsel I think is the outsider to be joining us.

On another thread someone also suggested we could use Young as a deeper-lying striker or free role type thing so we could do 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 that way.

I also don't think that we should be so quick to dump Downing on the ash-heap of history.

The fact remains if we got a quality winger, a quality attacking midfield player and another deeper player like Witsel (Even someone like Parker) our midfield would be great on paper. Up front if we bring in Keane we will have a roster of forwards of all talents. I think that together Gabby, Carew, Keane and Delfoueso can give us 40 goals.

All we require then is another left back to back up Warnock and a right back if the gaffer doesn't fancy Luke Young any more.

That kind of quality could be what we need to crack the top four. It is just that the context of a big spending Man City might prevent us from doing that.

Personally i think we're in for a transistional season at best if Milner goes. With the heart ripped out of the team, any replacements will take time to settle down and thats if he decides to replace him straight away or shift someone like he did with barry. Wouldn't be surprised to see Downing there with the majority of the milner money left in the bank for a season till he gets round to identifiying a player he wants.

Downing playing in the middle is too horrible a prospect to contemplate.

This 'optimism' reminds me of something from Fever Pitch

Frank: "take last year - they were fucking rubbish"

Man: "ah no"

Frank: "They were fucking rubbish - and i dont care if they are top of the league they'll be fucking rubbish again this year"

Man: "I don't know why you come frank honest i don't"

Frank: "well you live in hope don't you"

don't ask why..

Moving Milner into the middle turned him into a "world class player"  Maybe the same for Downing....
