Aston Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov says fans should trust boss Martin O’Neill to sign some quality players over the summer to improve the squad again.

O’Neill has yet to make any signings over the close season, despite having plenty of owner Randy Lerner’s money to spend, but Petrov is not worried and expects there to be signifcant arrivals before the Premier League season kicks-off next month.

“I am sure the manager and the chairman, who was down at the training ground last week, are working hard on getting new players in,” he said.

“And I am certain they are going to strengthen before the season starts because both men have great ambitions for Villa.

“They want to take this club even further and that’s why there will definitely be new signings coming in.”

James Milner’s future remains up in the air with Manchester City very keen on the England international while Spurs forward Robbie Keane is set to hold talks about a move to Villa Park.

Whatever the comings and goings will be over the summer, though, Petrov is confident Villa will have a better squad for the new campaign, which begins with a home game against West Ham on August 14.

“If the boss brings in the same sort of quality he did this time last year – with (Richard) Dunne, (James) Collins and (Stephen) Warnock – then we will all be very happy.

“The impact they had on our team was huge. If we can get that sort of player in again we’ll be very pleased.”

Keane could be off to Fulham if Jol is appointed the manager there.

I do not know anything about McGeady so i did what most of us do and checked him out on Youtube - there is a 9 minute montage and from that he looks like Lionel Messi

Can it be that misleading? Are the defenders really that shit? (Although he has some footage of international games so it not just the Jock crap league)

At least he seems to have some skill and we badly need a player who can excite the crowd

I cannot dismiss him entirely as he may be good

Its Youtube init. when you think the average footballer plays thousands of minutes just in a season then its stand to reason you can find 5 minutes of him looking good over his career

Those clips are very impressive. Still not convinced though, having seen two SPL players of the year struggle at the Villa.

Didn't hold up up much hope for it happening anyway if we're in for him. Lets face it, for Keane its a choice of us or retirement at some mid/lower table team. .

Bit concerned About the £10m price rumour on mcgeady though, maybe £5m plus emile but that would be as far as I'd go.would still prefer bentley to mcgeady if we are after a wide man, but their are other areas we should be strengthening first.

McGeady will just turn into another Maloney.

We wont know where to play him and when he does play he just won't be good enough.

Maloney was good enough, he just couldn't settle south of the border.

McGeady I fear won't be good enough!

Greg its illegal so again your talking bollocks

Villa is pricey but even you could go once or borrow my tickets and cost you nothing.

But hey that easy.

You following villa , ehh bollocks . You been to villa and I shagged Kylie , Beyonce and Katie Perry this evening

Your a fraud , face it

Dont need to justify myself to you richard. And if we're playing 'who's the biggest villa fan' if you were such a big villa fan you wouldn't live in Manchester. that way you at least wouldn't come over like you deserve a medal for what you spend.

Greg- I live on Merseyside does that mean I am not a true Villa fan also?

You failed to answer an earlier question - where do you live and when was the last time you graced either Villa Park or any other venue where Villa were playing?

Just interested like.

Back on topic....A big no to McGeady at the price speculated
