Well said chris!

People running the club can worry bout the finance of deals- it's what happens on the pitch and who we sign I care more about.

It is amazing that people are suddenly becoming very aware of the true cost of a player to the club.

Rather than saying who we should buy, what do people think we should spend on, say, a new forward - transfer fee plus, say, a 3 year contract.  Add to this the value of the player after 3 years assuming we would extend the contract so that he does not leave on a free transfer.

Then we can look at who is available in this total cost bracket.

Or perhaps we should just concentrate on what they'll contribute on the pitch?

Football's a business and a club has to work within it's means.

My comment was a bit of a 'tongue in cheek' response to how knowledgeable people have suddenly become on the financial running of a football club.  It was trying to bring together peoples expectations on the players we should sign and the cost of the signing to the club to somehow come to a conclusion on what is actual reality for Aston Villa FC in their pursuit of new signings.  This and try and get people to understand that you only get what you pay for.

Was I trying to be too clever.

You don't always only get what you pay for- dwight yorke was £10000 and collymore about £7.5m, but I know which one was better !

I agree totally with what you are saying but my comment was about the 'Villa 6'.

The point is, though, you can't divorce the two.

The club has to manage its finances appropriately, as ultimately the quality of what you see on the pitch suffers.

Who we sign is also dictacted by what we can afford.

I see Mamma Diarra is on the cards for a free out of Real Madrid. We should be in for him like a shot. Would be an excellent holding midfielder in the prem and would mean we are not reliant on Petrov all the time.

Fully agree ozzjim.

He's a big unit, would bring height to the middle of the park but can play a bit too.

If I could add one player to our squad it would be Donavon. It would allow us to play 4-3-3 with Donavon on the right, Petrov, Milner and Downing in the centre. There would be enough goals in the team and with luck on injuries/suspensions we could have a shot at 4th.

I too would like to see us go back to 4-3-3, but personel wise i'd go Milner, Petrov and Ireland in the midfield, Young left, Gabby right and Carew middle. Or Gabby middle, Milner right and Delph midfield when fit. Or maybe Young right, Gabby middle, Downing left if he gets his finger out of his arse. So many options with that formation.

He was very good a few years ago, no place for him at Real these days.

I could see a few big teams going in for him, hopefully MON will know who he is and make a bid. I doubt it though.

there's no way we'll sign diarra, no way whatsoever. As much as i'd like him here i just dont think o,neil recognises foreign talent. I know there's the odd exception to  us cuellar, the-worst-ever-habib beye. Etc but you'll notice they all come from british leagues never fresh from la liga etc.

Diarra is built for the Prem, would be a great signing for whoever gets him. He did have a massive knee-injury at one point if I remember rightly though, I haven't seen him play for Madrid in ages now.

Surely MON's lawyers will swoop on the film company that used this tagline
