if you ever want to see people getting their opinions wrong on a player, search for the thread title 'Ivanhoe'. Sure there was some sort of mon inspired  mass hypnosis going on there. Utterly mental some of the predictions.

Or you could equally look up the Dunne threads from last summer.

Hardly the same. Some people didn't rate Dunne and got it wrong. There were people on the Ivanhoe thread predicting 6 or more goals from him in half a season, or more than he's managed now. and it wasn't the minority either :o}

No, it was exactly the same.  The majority didn't want Dunne and the majority didn;t want Heskey either, as I recall.

not according to the poll on the Ivanhoe thread, unless the people who didn't want him were still predicting a goal avalanche from him.

If you'd like to post a link to the thread with the poll we can all have a look?

And even if they did think he'd score more than he did, you used it as an example of fans getting things wrong, yet don't agree that we were also wrong about Dunne?

I seem to remember when we signed Heskey that it appeared our club had pulled off a major coup. It didn't excite me and that was probably the case with a lot of Villa fans but in the wider football world the view at the time was that Heskey was well worth a punt.

For the record about McGeady, I've never seen him play 'cos I don't follow Scottish football. I don't rate the league so I expect him to be crap, but the fun thing about football is the fact we don't actually know anything about anything.

Just out of interest greg, when Heskey scored on his villa debut, where were your thoughts?

Jesus was I optimistic. Never again will I allow blind hope to cloud my judgement. Deep down, like everyone else, I knew full well, Heskey would probably be a donkey.

I'll state it off the bat now, McGeady would be mediocre in this league.

can't remember. for the record i didn't think he was that bad a buy at the time, just that he was pretty useless as a goalscorer which is what we needed.

Was it "bet he only scores one more this season"?

Because that would have been right.

*wink*

EDIT although Greg thought:

Typical nasher, wildly optimistic.

I'd go along with that. I think I hoped Heskey would bring out the best in our other strikers who could actually find the net. Maybe he has in some way but I can't be bothered to look up assists etc.

That was a thread asking how many he'd score after he had signed, which is not the same as opinions as to whether we should have signed him or not in the first place.

I thought that, as a direct replacement for Carew when he was injured, I could just about see some logic in the signing, but that we needed a scorer, and he wasn't that.

We could still do with a goalscorer.

Who would you say was our last great goalsorer? Without getting into the realms of Villa Memories.

Yorke was the last one to score a hatful in a season for us.

Although inconsistent season to season, I'd say JPA.

I thought Yorke as well. In this kind of team he'd get a shedload.
