Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton has had his car impounded by Australian police for a motoring offence.

The McLaren driver spun his wheels and performed a fishtail stunt in his 2010 silver Mercedes, just two days before the Australian Grand Prix.

He will be charged on summons with improper use of a vehicle after Victoria Police officers pulled him over, reported the Herald Sun.

Hamilton, who won the world championship in 2008, issued a statement soon after the incident: "This evening, I was driving in an over-exuberant manner and, as a result, was stopped by the police.

"What I did was silly, and I want to apologise for it."

The sports car was towed to a police yard in Melbourne, where it will be held for 48 hours under what Australian police call anti-hoon laws - designed to clamp down on anti-social driving.

Police in a parked van saw Hamilton turn into a street with smoking wheels and pulled him over.

Senior Constable Scott Woodford said the 2008 world champion stopped right away and was "extremely co-operative".

"It would have been fair to say he was fairly disappointed with the incident," he said.

Hamilton was interviewed for around half an hour in the car, and would have been routinely breath-tested.

The star driver, who was visibly upset, had his car towed away and impounded and will also receive a fine.

It is understood he told policemen at the scene that he was worried this would dent his reputation. He was not taken back the police station for questioning.

In 2007, Hamilton was banned from driving in France after being clocked driving at 123mph.

He was given an on-the-fine and his sports car was impounded by French police.

Ha ha!

Abysmal qualifying for Hamilton, and Button doesn't appear to be too happy a bunny either. Come on McLaren, sort it out!

They need to stop the strop about the Red Bull's being quicker and get on with it.

Hmmm, commentator who said Button made a massive mistake coming in to change tyres so early was really on the mark, wasn't he?

Wonder if that will be edited out of the replay later!

Some smaller but brighter teams sent there drivers out early, despite the weather. Those two didn't, the weather only got worse, and they both qualified at the back of the grid. A "bad call" as one might say. Stupid, as we'd say.

Hamilton and the two Ferraris were out qualified by both Lotus drivers... It is the kind of thing us Team Anyone But Those Two Teams supporters laugh our heads of at.

Yes, seen it now, either very unlucky or very bad judgement.

Mind you, might make for some fun as they battle through from the back

It is a shame they f*cked up the tyres yesterday because Lewis and Jensen are flying today.

Good race so far
