There was an excellent webcast yesterday featuring the chief "Stats Geek" from the Houston Astros (Sig Mejdal). I'm one of the data geeks at work - so we've been talking about this sort of thing lately (one of my colleagues brought it up at a team meeting). Sig did a brief demonstration using the data from the 1913 baseball season to show that the MVP award went to the wrong player!

If you Google Sig Mejdal, Jeff Luhnow and/or Moneyball you'll find LOADS about baseball, real data analysis and statistics.

Here's one: Extreme Moneyball: The Houston Astros Go All In on Data Analysis

there were plenty of awards in the past that went to the wrong people because all the voters looked at were batting average, pitching wins and later on, RBIs

however the most ridiculous award was only in 1999 when Raphael Palmeiro won the AL Gold Glove for First Base despite only starting 28 games at the position that season.

Phillies trade Chase Utley to the Dodgers - reuniting him with Jimmy Rollins.

The three best teams in baseball come from the NL North (Cardinals, Pirates & Cubs).  It's criminal that one of them will not make it past Wednesday - the wildcard game.  162 game season comes down to a one game playoff, which is scandalous.

Before the change, the Cubs would already be on their holidays.
