Pitching phenom Stephen Strasburg signs for the Washington Nationals for $15.1m over four years. Thanks to the draft system operated by Major League Baseball (and the other professional US sports), Strasburg had to sign with the Nationals or sit out until next year's draft. He was not allowed to go to the team of his choice and he was not allowed to go to the team that offered him the most money. If Strasburg had been born in another part of the world he could have signed for the highest bidder (as happens with Cuban defectors). In my opinion, the draft system is a restraint of trade. I'm amazed that it hasn't been overturned by legal action.

I like the draft system partly for it providing a socialist lifeboat in an ocean of capitalism but also as it does seem to help to prevent the same domination by a small cabal we endure here and in Europe in football.

I have to be honest, I love the idea of a draft.
I think it helps to keep the playing field level.

But why should Strasburg get less money as an American baseball phenom than he would if he was say, a British baseball phenom (not that there's been one since Bobby Thomson !!) ? The draft system seems to go against the normal US principles of business

well yeah, there are errors in the system. I think everyone should have to go into the draft, whether you are cuban, american, or whatever...
The idea behind the draft is a good one. Could it be better? yeah, but the idea is good.
Going against the normal US prinicples of business? I mean... sure... whatever that means.
This is baseball.
If there was no draft every year the top prospects would go to the Yankees, Dodgers, Mets and Redsox.
This allows for the smaller teams to compete as well.

Has someone explained this to the Pittsburgh Pirates ? Also, wouldn't it be good to see Strasburg pitching in meaningful games rather than for the Natinals ?

yeah, I would love to have this Strasburg cat on my team. No doubt!
But to a Nationals fan, Nationals games are meaningful.
To a Padres fan, Padres games are meaningful. To a Royals fan, Royals games are meaningful. To a Cardinals fan, Cardinals games are meaningful.
To a Pirates fan, Pirates games are... Well there is one exception...

I HATE when my favorite team gives up 11 runs to their arch-rivals!!!
But it does help when they score 20 runs on 23 hits and win 20-11!

And congratulations to the Pittsburgh Pirates on their 17th consecutive losing season

And congratulations to the Pittsburgh Pirates on their 17th consecutive losing season Why thank you. We didn't want to get too greedy, the City of Champions is already home to the Stanely Cup and the Vince Lombardi Superbowl trophies, a third would have been taking the piss.
