I dont care, I always like Ortiz and Manny.

I am not going to say anything to anyone who didn't act like it was the end of the world when Arod admitted it.

And all of the Mets Fa- oooops I mean Sox Fans where I live must have known this was coming.

It's "non-waiver trade deadline day" in MLB. Here's the latest news

Jake Peavy - Padres to White Sox
A bit of a surprise this one because Jake turned down a move to Chicago earlier in the season

Jarod Washburn - Mariners to Tigers
I thought that he'd end up with the Yankees

And now for the big one.........

Victor Martinez - Indians to Red Sox
The Sox get the slugger they need and do it without giving up Clay Buchholz. Nice work by Theo.

And in a surprising non-trade, Doc Halladay is staying with the Blue Jays.

I know this one I think.

RBI = Runs batted in, if someone is on a base when you are batting and they get home after you have hit it you are credited with an RBI - right?

That leads me to my own question, what is a 'sacrifice fly'?

With less than two outs and a runner on third, the batter can sky one into the outfield where he will be caught out but the runner on third can advance home and score a run as long as he doesn't advance from third base until the ball is actually caught. He can still be tagged out at home plate if the fielder throws home before he gets there.

RBI - Close enough (you don't necessarily have to get a "hit" or even make contact with the ball to get an RBI)

Sac Fly - Runner on third base with less than two outs. Batter hits the ball in the air and it is caught by one of the fielders (normally an outfielder). The runner on third base can leave the base as soon as the ball is caught and try to run to home plate before the fielder's throw gets there.

Anyone (apart from pmarachi) care to have a go at explaining the "Infield Fly" rule ?!?

With less than two outs and runners on first, first and second or bases loaded, if a batter hits a flyball in the infield, the umpire will call an automatic out meaning the runners on bases can stay where they are.

The reason for this is that in days gone by unscrupulous players would deliberately let the ball drop or drop a catch in the infield forcing the runners on their respective bases to have to attempt to reach the next base and the fielding side have a chance to record two or more outs rather than just the one.

How did I do? Does that make sense to anyone other than UK Redsox or P Marachi? In fact, does that make sense to UK Redsox or P Marachi?

is there anywhere to catch a live game over there at all?

One of my goals in life is to get my wife to go to Europe.  Then convince her to go to England instead of Spain, France or Italy...

Then convince her to go to Brimingham instead of London.

You mean in person ?

I wouldn't bother in the UK, but here's the local Brum Nine

Birmingham Maple Leafs

From the looks of the standings, even the Pittsburgh Pirates might beat them.

Holland and Italy are the main places for playing baseball in Europe

Here's an extract from a short history of the game in the UK

Quote
1847 First played in GB by touring teams

1890 Baseball Association of GB formed

1934 Baseball started in North West. Sir John Moore of Littlewoods starts the NBA National Baseball Association.

1936 Professional leagues formed, Derby, Manchester, Stoke, Preston & Aston Villa

1937 First Baseball camp at Aston Villa, Pro league games attracting crowds of 30k

1938 England beat USA in the first World Amateur Championships. School leagues formed.

Cheers folks, so it was pretty special then.

Has there ever been a game when both pitchers have pitched no-hitters? Or even come close?

IIRC it's nigh on impossible as the odds are high that if both pitched no hitters the score would be 0-0 after 9 innings and would go into extra innings, so it wouldn't qualify as a complete game as relief pitchers would appear at some stage. If that makes sense and I remember everything right. I'm sure there have been pitchers who pitched 9 hitless innings but don't have a no hitter given them as the score finished 0-0. I'm so glad I started trying to explain, i'm confusing myself now.

This is true, but there is always the slight possibility that this could happen (no hitter, not a perfect game) and the winning run could get walked in.

You may lose 1-0, but there was no H

I doubt it has ever happened though.

Also, if it is 9 innings in, and you haven't given up a hit yet, there is NO WAY anyone is taking you out of a game.

Here's the closest that there's been to a double no-no

Da Wiki

Quote
On September 9, 1965, Koufax became the sixth pitcher of the modern era to throw a perfect game, the first by a left-hander since 1880. The game was Koufax's fourth no-hitter, setting a Major League record (subsequently broken by Nolan Ryan). Koufax struck out 14 batters, the most recorded in a perfect game. The game also featured a quality performance by the opposing pitcher, Bob Hendley of the Cubs. Hendley pitched a one-hitter and allowed only two batters to reach base. Both pitchers had no-hitters intact until the seventh inning.

In one of baseball's great statistical and score-keeping anomalies, this has been the only nine-inning major league game where both teams combined for one hit. The game's only run, scored by the Dodgers, was unearned. The Dodger run was scored without a recorded at bat—Lou Johnson walked, reached second on a sacrifice bunt, stole third, and scored when the throw to get him out at third went wild

Movin' on....... apparently there's some minor series of games starting in the Bronx tonight.

Can the Sox stretch there season record against the Highlanders to 9 - 0 ?
