Yep

A couple of year's ago, the Daily Telegraph did a feature on British born or raised sportstars in the States.

Amongst the various basketball players (Leol Deng, John Ameche etc) and NFL kickers (John Smith, Mick Luckhurst) they mentioned some baseball player that even I'd never heard of.

Therefore, I wrote in saying that they'd missed the most famous of them all and reminded them of the story of Thomson's home run in 1951.

The next week, The Telegraph printer my letter together with a photo (of Bobby that is, not me !!)

Cubs manager Lou Piniella retires. Thanks for taking us to the playoffs 2 out of your 4 years!

Door closes on Piniella's managerial career

It looks like Manny will be traded from the Dodgers to the White Sox in exchange for, well.......... nothing!!

http://sports.espn.go.com/los-angeles/mlb/news/story?id=5510704

Just shows how much Manny has fallen when he becomes an August salary dump.

Manny and Ozzie in the same clubhouse is going to be interesting

Nyjer Morgan gets pummelled

http://mlb.fanhouse.com/2010/09/01/nyjer-morgan-charges-mound-setting-off-brawl-between-nationals/?ncid=edlinkusspor00000004

(NB - "Nyjer" is my favourite name in sports. Naming a kid after "New York" and "New Jersey" is superb. Its time that some kids in the West Midlands were named "Wolbir".)

The NL West leading Padres have now lost 10 straight games. The longest losing streak by a first place team in almost 80 years.

They're now just one game ahead of the Giants

Meanwhile, my Sox lost a third straight game to the Chi Sox as the latter continue to press the Twins in the AL Central

Trevor Hoffmann (now of the Brewers but most famously of the aforementioned Padres) has become the first pitcher to achieve 600 Saves

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20100907&content_id=14424616&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb

After the struggles he's had in Milwaukee this year, I didn't think he was going to make it.

The campaign to get rid of maple bats will intensify now

Cubs player Tyler Colvin impaled by broken bat and hospitalized

Quote
Colvin was coming home from third on Welington Castillo's RBI double, watching the ball in flight, when the sharp part of the broken bat hit him in the chest, inches from his heart and jugular vein. He swatted away the bat, which did not stick, and was treated immediately in the dugout.

Colvin was listed in stable condition Sunday night in the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. A tube was inserted into his chest to prevent a collapsed lung. He'll remain hospitalized for two or three days, and his promising rookie season is over. The Cubs said he was fortunate to elude a much more serious injury.

He was seriously competing for ROY too. That sucks.

Colvin & Byrd were probably the only two Cubs having respectable seasons
