It was great to see Herd run 40 yards to make sure he was in the box to pick up the chance that got him his goal. Not seen that from a midfielder at Villa Park for a while.

Carruthers was injured I think.

And Hookey, agree totally on Bannan. Not sure who he thinks he is, but I'd bet that was probably one of the first times he has actually been on the winning team when starting.

You could say that about every single one of our players based on last season.  They used to say the same about Gareth Bale as well.

It was the way he was berating a player making his debut for mis-placed passes when he almost gave a goal away and mis-placed far more. He's hardly a seasoned, successful pro at the club and should concentrate on getting his own game right before spouting off at others.

i like Bannan, like the way he controls the ball and his vision, i can also understand those who dont rate him for the reasons quoted, but i do rate him and think he could become be a very good player for us.

i also think he lost his way last year with the 'car incident' and also agree with others that maybe he got above himself,
Hopefully Lambert is the man to sort him out and get the best from him, he could go either way for me, but at the moment i would be one to keep the faith with him

Entertaining game, thought we pinged it around quite nicely. Good to see a win at last! Opposition were quite limited but you can only beat what is put in front of you. Was impressed with Lichaj, looked very composed, seems to be developing nicely. Also thought he did OK when he came on on Saturday. Decent cameo from Burke at the end.

Bent's finish was superb, you see the net ripple before the keeper even reacts, really clean strike.

Bents finish was awesome. He really meant it. He needed that goal.

He had a go at the left back  I think...may be that's the incident you are talking about? If so he was right to do so because it was simple stuff that he got wrong and as a PL players that should never  happen.

Yes I agree Bent finish was fantastic. Almost Drogba class. When the ball was squared to him,  almost 90 degrees I thought he will need a touch but the next action was net bulging ...brilliant.

Like Bannan's blind pass to their striker or his 50 yard pass on Saturday that got cut out easily... as I said, it's not as if he is a pro with years of experience and isn't making stupid basic errors himself. Pity Stevens didn't have a go at Bannan when he almost cost us a goal.

I'm sorry mate, I usually agree with your posts,  but that is bollox.
There is no way Bannan should have had a go at a debutant like that.
I don't recall others around him giving Bannan a bollocking when his shitty backpass was intercepted and nearly led to a shooting opportunity.
Bannan is 'billy big time' without the justification for being so.

Agree totally - he is a tenth of the player he actually thinks he is and if our formation is to be based on him picking everything up off the CB's then sideways sideways sideways give it away then God help us

Bannan under no pressure, like most footballers,is very good.Pressure him and he can't cope.He hasn't the pace to get away from a player and is very reluctant to move forward and support a colleague or receive the ball with an opponent close by.Too often,he needs a second touch unlike Ireland who can spot a pass and play it first time.Bannan is more of a luxury than even N'Zogbia who can bring different qualities to a team.A deep lying midfielder who can't tackle.

As they say, a win is a win.  Agree with a lot of what has been put on here.  Bannan looked good, but what did he achieve?  He was playing either 10 yards in front of the centre halfs or, at times, actually alongside them.  Then to play a 10 yard square ball and not move for the return or attempt to cross the half way line with it did not impress me.  I was disappointed in Lichaj not getting forward and taking on his opposite number.  When he played last year I thought he looked good at wanting to be an attacking full back but last night he kept turning the ball back inside or backwards.  The other player I was disappointed with was Herd.  He looked out of his depth as the right hand player of the diamond. Unable to fashion any movement of the ball and not seeing the movement of other players around him, but just (seems familiar) playing it square or backward.  I thought Ireland had a good game but had to drop too deep on occasions due to the ineffectiveness of Herd, Bannan and Delph in getting the ball forward to him quickly enough.  He really needs to maintain a position just behind the front two so he can play them in.  IMO Baker was MOM, he really showed some good defensive play and I think should be there alongside Vlaar for the future.

Apart from what's been said about Bannan, he has ability but his execution is very inconsistent and above all else, his slight frame an build is always going to be a problem against stronger more powerful guys
