I’m surprised they haven’t been of more help. They have been absolutely wonderful with my son. When he suffered a career ending injury they paid literally thousands of pounds for one of the world’s leading knee surgeons to operate on him and although he’s no longer in the pro game he is potentially fit enough four years later to be playing again. Plus they have supported him with a bursary to do a degree. They are not all bad.

I'm genuinely pleased to hear that Fred and I wish your lad well but, with respect your son had a 'fixable' problem, mental anguish notwithstanding so the PFA would have a good idea what the financial outlay was going to be (the bursary is a great idea) but with Brendan Ormsby the poor man could linger in this state for years in need of constant care which, IMO makes the PFA shy away very quickly.  They were quick enough to take his money in his playing days I would imagine.  Perhaps it's my cynicism has me thinking this way I don't know. 

 Didn't Ken McNaught have problems with them fairly recently regarding heart surgery of some kind?  Anyway, it's good to hear your lad is playing again and also has a life's plan.  I'm afraid that by the sounds of it, poor old Brendan hasn't.  The buckets will show the true spirit of football supporters as it always does when matters of this kind arise.  Get well soon Brendan.

Thanks. Please don’t get me wrong , I have every sympathy with Brendan and all other ex pros who are struggling. They put their bodies through hell and with the heavy footballs of those days many have suffered with or have the threat of impending dementia to deal with. In most cases they had pitiful financial rewards to show for careers which would these days make them millionaires. My heart goes out to them, and the PFA should do everything they can to support them.

Fred, there was nothing in your post that suggested anything regarding lack of sympathy and empathy.  It was great to hear that your lad was taken care of and he's well.  I think what gets people's backs up is when they hear of the likes of the Lowry expenditure while the Brendan Ormsby's of this world suffer on having expected to receive help when it was required.  I don't know the politics of the PFA which made me ask what's the point?  I suspect the dementia issue has a long road yet to run.

No worries, I wasn’t taking offence at all, you made a very good point. I was just feeling a tad guilty for not showing more sympathy to poor Brendan - I wish him all the very best.

I grew up and went to school with Brendan and Wendy in Ladywood. Really heartbreaking to see them both in the BBC news reel.

I watched the Look North piece live here in Yorkshire.
It was deeply sad but also wonderful to see the love of husband and wife. His wife is clearly carrying a great burden too.
