Sod width, creativity and pace as we're banging in goals like they're going out of fashion.

I’ll predict it now 1-0 down after 70 minutes Everton close up shop subs make nooooooooo impact. Joke of a line up.

Ok with Bogarde, not so much Buendia.

Elliot should have started, Emery seems timid to throw people in.

Buendia vs Everton is a bit like Sarr vs us isn't he?  Seems to do well against them.

Other than that, the lineup is more of the same plodding walking football that creates the square root of jack shit. Sigh.

Midfield looks weak without Boubacar but can't be helped I guess.

Bench looks a lot stronger, I think we'll need them after Everton going one up early in the second half then shutting up shop.

He never really understood Emery’s reluctance to throw good players in from the start. I get the whole structure, system etc. but good players are good players. Bogarde is a decent no nonsense player. But he’s not a starting PL option when you look at what’s on our bench. Buendia was the only player vs Palace who came away with any kind of credit for his performance so less issue there. But in reality he’s a squad player too. Anyway, we have options on the bench now and in a week or two, Kamara, Onana, Barkley hopefully will be back also.

I know Emery doesn't like negativity but thats a very Conservative starting team. All those attacking players we have and we start with McGinn and Buendia in forward positions.

Yes we have a strong bench but I would rather be proactive rather than reactive.

It’s a conservative line up to stop them from playing, keep it tight and hit on the counter or win it late on. It’s not a go for it line up for a team that needs to go for it. Scoring a goal will be useful.

I don't understand the line-up. I can't help but shake the feeling that the Emery of 2023 would not have selected that team. Why the defensive turn?

I'd have gone with Buendia, as he finished the game against Palace well. Bring Elliott on second half if it isn't working.

Yeah which is great until we concede a goal with Evertons very first attack and then they sit back and we cant break them down and then they score again.

Could we just once really go for it and then sit back and counter? We certainly have better players than most teams we just don't utilise them.

It’s harsh on him, but when I see Buendia in the squad, let alone first 11, I can’t help but sigh.  Kamara still out.  Again, sigh.

Anyway, cmon Villa.

Keep it tight & bring on the subs to win the game.
Or
Everton score from their first attack & we spend 80 mins of possession football.

It's interesting that he seems to have lost faith with Torres.

It’s called our transfer activity.

No pace to hit them on the counter so expect we will try and dominate possession, if we don’t control the game it could be a long afternoon.

It's pretty much what I'd have gone for.

Me too, it's conservative don't get me wrong but we have been a mess defensively so far. Solid shape about us, Bogarde does give us legs in midfield anyway and Buendia is rewarded for a decent cameo v Palace. Digne was always going to start against his old team. Think McGinn can and should cause Garner, out of position at left back, a lot of problems. Will help keep Grealish in check too on that side.

Lots of options on the bench to change things with Maatsen, Elliot and Sancho. Our bench is far stronger than theirs. Can shift Rogers in off left or McGinn inside if we need to. First half unlikely to be one for the purists! That Everton team, Grealish aside, looks championship level on paper but need to match them physically to start with.

Dirty 0-1 win or 1-2 will do!

What an absolutely negative line up!

Perhaps the new players aren't up to the 'walking' football that has been introduced!

It is all very well having a strong bench but when you are already losing (as we will be) it is just so difficult to change the game!

Going to be painful to watch but lets hope for the best!

I’m hoping the mental side of the club is more settled following the transfer window shutting. While we got some good players in by the end it was a disaster in how it unsettled so many players in our squad. Let’s hope there is a calm now and everyone just does their job. Not sure about the line up but if we stick to the task there is enough in that group to get a much needed result.

You can guarantee if we had signed Grealish on loan he wouldn't have started a game yet.

Rogers played well for England because he had pace around him giving him space, Playing McGinn on the right just doesn't work.

Emery is the best Manager we've had in ages and he gets a pass so far for hes done for us but I do wonder why we start so negative in games.

I dont know what I was expecting but I didnt expect to see none of the attacking players starting. Guessand or Malen would have made much more sense than emi B or mcginn. Even if it was only one of the two as SJM does have his plus sides in a game like today.

Guessand was hooked at half time the last day and Malen might aswell have been.

The big call was whether to bring Elliot in on the right but can see why it looks like he is going with McGinn out there. McGinn probably only has 60-70 mins in him today after the Scotland games so there will be changes.

I don’t know why we bother buying players, they never get a game!!

Sancho was never going to start. Been in exile all summer at Man. United so his match fitness for start of games won't be what we need it to be. I think the plan is he starts at Brentford.

I am however very disappointed we're not starting Elliott. He has been around the Liverpool squad, played in the community shield (on top of under 21s tournament in June/early July) and has been training at Bodymoor the last two weeks so not to put him in ahead of player we've been trying to sell for last 18 months sums up the muddled thinking we've had lately.

Saying that Buendia does have a ridiculously good scoring record v Everton!

I can see this being the same as Brentford if not worse. Starting at snail pace, conceding then we have plenty of possession but not much pace to open them up and then we concede another in the second half.

He's said in press conferences recently the main aim is to get to half time at 0-0 and then try to step things up in second halves.

Not much good if you're conceding early though like v Brentford and Palace and then having to chase a game.

Why the mindset has changed so much from what we were doing in 2023 only he can answer. I could understand it more in November/December when we're deep with european games but we've just started the season with most players having a good break.

2023 was just amazing really when you look at the results and performances. That home game v Man. City was the peak of what Emery management can produce in a 90 minutes. Also had games like 6-1 v Brighton when we were 3-0 up in 25 minutes.

That all seems like 20 years ago and I find it hard to think we can reach those same heights again without major squad surgery.

Slow and a bit more slow, and back and some more slow and a little slow again. Evolve the tactics man. When Glasner kept saying everyone knows how Emery plays then it should be a signal to tweak the system a touch.

We have been at our best under Unai when we’ve attacked.

Indeed. This defensive mode of ours isn't even that, we get opened up all too regularly, even by such things as simple long balls.

Not sure wtf is going on at Villa, same old start, got into the game a little towards the end but really and truthfully Everton should have put this game out of sight, Cash is bang on for a red card he can't deal with Jack, Uni will have to shuffle about the full back position, all in all terrible would take a point at this stage of the game.

Come on Villa get this sorted.

Two very average teams, that last 15 mins drifted into the dullest type of football you will see. Martinez has been very sharp, Mings ok, Buendia ok. Watkins looks ok too. The rest appalling really. Digne can't handle their guy, running in treacle. Midfield just a mess, McGinn far too narrow. Tielemans and McGinn both look gassed. Rogers disinterested again. Bogarde out of his depth.

Maatsen for Digne anyway. Elliot on too for Bogarde and shift McGinn in. Rogers left (10 mins to wake up) and Buendia at 10. Id leave Cash on, let him suffer a bit after that yellow.

Think Cash did ok up to that yellow, the tackle of a man who wouldn't mind coming off. For whatever stupid reason McGinn is dropping on KDH, maybe Bogarde is meant to getting across. But giving Grealish that kind of space is crazy

The oly club in the whole football league not to have scored a goal would back up your point.

When you only decide to enter the opponents box or test the opponent’s keeper 1 or 2 times a game that’s the outcome.

I genuinely never thought given the three years or so we’ve had with Emery we would ever see such terrible football again. We’ve had such an easy start to the season with only one side that finished above us. It’s only going to get much worse from here. What a waste.
