Title: Aston Villa v Ipswich Town 15.02.25 - Pre Match Thread
Post by: Dave P on February 11, 2025, 12:21:21 PM
We go again.  Trying to win our first league match in 4.

Assuming Konsa is out and none of the injured players are back, I'd expect to see

                 Martinez

Garcia   Disasi    Kamara   Digne

          Tielemans  McGinn

Bailey      Rogers       Ramsey

               Malen

This could be a decent result if we get at them early.  No clean sheet though.  4-1 (Malen 2,Bailey, Rashford)

Win 3 1 and I'd expect the injured players may be held back for the more difficult following 2 fixtures.

So far this season we have mostly fluffed our lines after a great performance. We must not continue with that trait.  Players need to forget Sunday and be up for this one. Ipswich will fight and we have to match them. If we do work hard it should be a straight forward win.

I’m so excited about this game. I’m taking my 7 year old to his first match. We live in SE London and it is hard to keep kids on the straight and narrow. He’s flirted with the idea of supporting Arsenal (2 of his best friends do) and my wife thinks I should bring him up Palace (so we can actually attend games). She has no interest in sport at all and just doesn’t understand how impossible that would be for me.

I still remember my first visit. August 86, lost 0-3 to Spurs on the opening day. I’m hoping we do slightly better than that.

I remember that game distinctly. Chiefly because there was serious talk in the lead up of Villa challenging towards the top of the table before the beginning of the season. No, believe me, there was. Really. How hollow that talk seemed 90 mins later, even if 0-3 makes it look more one-sided than it actually was

In all seriousness 3-1 Villa and Rashford will score at least one of them.

Cue Jaden Philogene's best performance of the season at Villa Park.

I think that’s a PFA directive, isn’t it; to turn into Messi on the first visit to your ex-club with the new one.
Along the lines of, ‘Look what a diamond you could have kept’, to adapt a Brucie catchphrase.

4-0 with Rashford bagging his first goal for Villa

Yorke's goal may have been technically better, but Dean's was a proper 'what the fuck?!' goal, I used to sit behind the doguts then and we were right behind it.

Think that's for the best even if he is fit. Malen's done enough to keep his place. Give Ollie 20 minutes and keep him fresh for later in the month.

At the point at which Saunders struck the ball, its not as if the keeper was that far off his line. Hell of a dip on the shot

So you still saw it sail over the keeper, someone who was probably on the 6 yard box if that. I remember the drooling over the Yorke goal at the time because of the "team" play which is why I mentioned 20 passes earlier. It was four.

7:42 in, Saunders at 11:55.

Bob Wilson backed us as outsiders for the title on football focus. Id been going to a good few games for a couple years, but I’d managed to scrape together £24 for my first juvenile season ticket on the Holte for 86-87 as a twelve year old. A Clive Allen hat trick gave the childish me a proper Villa reality check.

Agree.
Think Delap will actually give our back line a harder game than any of the spurs players. But Bailey, Asensio, Malen, Rashford, Ramsey, Rogers at various points in the game, will overwhelm them

That was my first game at Villa Park.  And I was sat right behind Deano when he hit it and watched it sail all the way in (I was sat directly in line from him to the goal).  It set me up for a lot of disappointment, as I expected similar for each subsequent visit...

I hope so as we now have enough attackers to make a difference. It is how strong our defence will be against cloggers and physicality. You hope Disasi will counter some of that, but then how comfortable will he be in possession and how must of an understanding will he have with Kamara (unless Mings pops out the woodwork).

For weeks now we have been spurning chances and it has cost us in the league. There is pressure on us for this game with Liverpool suddenly landing next week, a win is essential to keep pace (although I do fancy us next Weds).

While we still look light at the back we have enough up front to be confident of a victory and we look solid at home, all pointing to a handsome win against a side that did give us trouble earlier in the season but really should be dispatched without fuss. There will be fuss though, 4 x fuss and the only fly in the ointment will be the failure to keep a clean sheet albeit via a consolation for the 1980/81 League Championship Runners Up.

4-1

If I could ask for one thing to come from this match it's that the guy on the PA doesn't shout 'yippi ai ay' just before kick off.

I've never cringed so much at anything in my entire life. Well, not since he referred to Torres as 'Pau wow Torres' last year anyway.

Absolutely, I thought this had been put to bed after that awful "wow" moment last year and he sounds utterly uncomfortable doing it.

I do laugh when the pitch announcer shouts "Up The Villa" just before KO and his voice cracks almost every single week.

I dont like the tannoy stuff, bit cringe, bit contrived. We dont need to be nudged to sing before k/o, or what to sing, its been happening without someone prompting us for ever!!

The turning of the ‘every week we follow’ chant into a recorded song at the end of games, is so odd as well, like a Smurfs version. Is that to stop everyone singing ‘fuck the blues’ to Neil Diamond?

The turning of the ‘every week we follow’ chant into a recorded song at the end of games, is so odd as well, like a Smurfs version. Is that to stop everyone singing ‘fuck the blues’ to Neil Diamond?

I hate that quite passionately as well. It's almost 'North London Forever' levels of cringe.

Think there was a 6-2 in the league cup under Graham Taylor, maybe first season after promotion 88-89. Got a vague memory of Dalian Atkinson scoring a screamer for them, there was about 15 of us there.

I’m still annoyed that because of the noise barrage right up to kick off we couldn’t get a dignified tribute to Gary Shaw.

Having watched both Manchester clubs tribute to Denis Law it can be done if there isn’t a frenzied build up.

The only benefit to it was the attempts by Spurs to generate atmosphere in the build up to the game were completely drowned out by the cacophony of piped music before kick off.

It’s obviously someone’s bright idea but I don’t think it works at all!

It was early in the 76/77 season. One of the most exciting Villa teams ever. Gray got 25 league goals that season. We beat both Liverpool and Arsenal 5-1 at home. We won the League Cup thanks to some brilliant displays by Sir Brian in the semi 3rd game with QPR and the 2nd replay in the final with Everton. Gray got one other hat trick in that campaign, last game of the season against Smethwick.

Maybe we already have. Vinnie of this parish gave a little wink when someone suggested we should get him. Of course he might have had something in his versus a hint something was in the works. But Delap at 21 would be a great back up to Ollie. Then again ww did say that about the previous 21 year we had here in that role.

I suppose they are relatively content with having Haaland though. But in general, they have an ageing first team that would be made less so had they held onto Delap, Rogers and Palmer - you can imagine the latter two would be starters for them this season.

Lots of options now. Emery needs to balance all selections now based on 5 games in 14 days. The good news is we will have a strong bench .

Win tomorrow, 40 points, safe from relegation.

Old habits die hard.

3-1 to the Villa.

Are we going to see a brand new central defensive partnership tomorrow ?
Made up of two powerful, physical no nonsense centre halves?

It’s going to be interesting to see that sort of dynamic for a change.

GARCIA
MAATSEN
DISASI
MINGS
TIELEMANS
MCGINN
ROGERS
RASHFORD
BAILEY
MALEN

Rashford, Malen and Rogers for us in a 3-1 win.

Bloody hell. How did I miss starting Kamara? I’m ashamed. Kamara in for Bailey with Morg and Rashford playing behind Malen.

The very definition of a banana skin .

Wikipedia [Banana skin]

A banana peel, called banana skin in British English, is the outer covering of a banana. Banana peels are used as food for animals, an ingredient in cooking, in water purification, for manufacturing of several biochemical products as well as for jokes and comical situations.

If we’re serious about amassing 65pts+ then Ipswich have to be put to the sword. That’s all that needs saying.

Our midfield and attacking options are beyond belief compared to 2/3 years ago.
Barkley..McGinn..Tielemans
Onana..Kamara..Asensio
Malen..Rogers..Bailey
Ramsey..Watkins..Rashford
any six from those to start today, hopefully we can get into positive goal difference this afternoon. An overdue win surely in the league.

On the other hand, it might be a good game to rest Kamara.  With all the new signings and ridiculous fixture schedule, you could make the case for many different line-ups today.

Incredible isn't it?  Still with Barkley and Onana to come back too.
