Title: Nottingham Forest vs Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Dave on December 11, 2024, 08:35:10 AM
Saturday 14th December, 5.30pm

Martinez
Cash
Konsa
Mings
Maatsen

Onana
Kamara
McGinn
Tielemans

Watkins
Rogers

Mings better than Pau to deal with Wood. Much as Duran deserves another start I reckon he would get more joy out of Murillo and Milenkovic after 60 minutes of Watkins stretching them a bit.

1-1

Is Onana likely to be fit?

He's been on the bench for the last two games, so I assume he's available at the very least. If not him, then Barkley.

edit - because for all the "Duran deserves a start" talk, that's now three important goals for Barkley in the last eleven games, which is actually more than Duran has. So I guess the same shout could be made for him too.

Hoping there’s no CL hangover and worried about their fast and direct style.

I think I’d give Mings a start here. Unsure about Watkins/Duran.

Our performance here last season was amongst the most insipid and weak that I can recall.

Hoping for better this time around, and the signs were good last night, we attacked and controlled in a manner that we have got used to under this Manager and need it to continue. Mings to come in to the back line for me to counter the threat of Woods, and I think Emery will definitely change things up again. A tight win.

1-2

We need to be giving these a bit of a slap down, I've no beef with Forest but their results have become annoyingly good.

Cash on the Wing again? Played well last night and will be motivated against his former club.

Imagine Mings may play, to counter the threat of Wood in the air.

Is Digne out? If not he's a cert to start. With Watkins limping off last night Duran will surely start. Think he deserves a start in a big game for us in any case.

Emery hasn't tried Tielemans further forward yet this season that I recall but that seems the obvious switch with Ramsey and Bailey out, McGinn to the right Rogers left and one of Barkley or Onana next to Kamara.
Title: Re: Nottingham Forest vs Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Dave on December 11, 2024, 10:44:51 AM
Is Digne out?

No, don't think so. And I expect you're right, that Digne will start. Just in the way I'd line up, if we're making the midfield more solid and Mings comes in for Pau then the full-backs would become more important for attacking.

And Murillo and Milenkovic are both enormous, so I think Maatsen getting in behind and cutting the ball back is more likely to be useful than Digne floating crosses to the back post.

I've gone for a draw but would like at least 5 points from the next 3, however they come. 7-8 points from those 4 games would be a decent haul.

I just don't know if Maatsen is ready for starting games like this one away at Forest. I think he will eventually replace Digne, as he has that ability like Moreno had to get behind a team, but Digne has been playing very well.

There's no perfect solution as we are clearly short at winger, but I feel like you negate some of McGinn's best arsework when you play him wide.

We will not keep a clean sheet. Other things being equal, we will score more goals than them.

We played some good football against Leipizig, but the PL is a different beast, as most teams realize that if you stop our midfielders from turning by fair means or foul, our efficiency is reduced. Maybe Cash further forward is a temporary solution, as it may release Digne on the left.

Yes, all 4 are in an around us at the moment. They're all 6 point games in a way. Forest will be well up for it as their upcoming games are, based on form, easier than ours. They're kind of the us of last season and a win would be massive for them. We must take it seriously and avoid the post CL slump we've seen a few times already.

Mings and Torres to return to Central defence . Duran to start .

Cash Konsa Mings Digne
--- Kamara -- Onana ---

Given our awful November, if we are serious about snatching that 5th CL spot then we need to start winning some tough away games. Like this one.

By you, you mean?

It's not a suggestion I've heard anyone else out there in footballworld make.

What you're effectively doing here, despite disguising it as a suggestion which others may make, is saying we're flat track bullies.

It's part of your monotonous, endless digging away at things, the constant need to see every problem as probably fatal.

TBF, 2 thirds of the league were above us at that point. And we were at home.

Anyway, it's our away form that we need to improve mostly. When did we last beat a top side away?

Arsenal last season?

Leipzig on Tuesday. 🙂

Tbf we need to improve our (league) record against twat teams this season. Even allowing for the traditional Man U exception, we did very well against twat teams last season. Just one point from five games so far this time.

Their forum is quite entertaining.

Quote
I vote we have a discreet word with Aston Villa and the teams emerge from the tunnel carrying 3 European Cups between us.

Put them casually down on the pitch, carry on as normal. Maybe get the mascots to take them off the pitch before kick off.

Why?

BECAUSE WE BLOODY WELL CAN.

Their home form isn't the best. Nuno has done a great job building them from the back so we need to be clinical with the chances we get. Our fullbacks need to be on their toes but it's in midfield where the game will be decided and we should have too much for them.

Tough game but we need the three points to keep in reach of the current top 4.

This is the clearest draw there is. Therfore it won't be.  8)

1-3. Watkins Brace.
i would probably take a draw tbh. Forest  ia not a easy place to go

It is an easy place to go - just straight up the A38.

Jump off on the A50 though or you'll end up in Mansfield, and nobody wants that.

My best mate from uni was from Mansfield. Nottingham feels like the East Midlands, Mansfield feels much more northern. And grim.

I knew a bloke who played for Mansfield. He also played for Chesterfield in the FA cup semi final against Middlesbrough.

True dat,

I am reminded of a line from Inspector Morse to Lewis:

"Further north than Stoke on Trent, I have no desire to go".

One of mine was, too. Had several nights out in Mansfield around 1987-9 - frightening.

I remember in a more sane and sensible time that this would have been the Boxing Day game and we'd be playing freckin' Newcastle today instead

Never been to Mansfield and, not knowing anyone from there, can't imagine why I ever would. It just seems like Rotherham or Scunthorpe, places like that. No characteristic or redeeming feature that makes a visit seem worthwhile. Never been to Chesterfield either, but at least that has the cathedral

Anyway, entertaining draw, 1-1, 2-2 outside

Don't knock Mansfield. The last time we went there we ended up getting promoted.

I was at that Mansfield match. Must be getting old!!

So was I
I lived in Mansfield at the time

We didn’t get promotion that night as we only drawed 1-1

I've only been once to Mansfield. That was for a job interview when I was 21. I didn't get the job.

The old part of Chesterfield is very nice.

Don't you live in/near Croydon? Surely the poster boy for pointless places?

No, he was 21.

He was called Morris, or Maurice in polite company.

A rare shot of Doug getting his face in the celebratory pics. Was just as visible during the tougher times as well...

He's done well there hasn't he. Always satisfying when a player finds their natural level and succeeds there
