Thought McGinn might play, he's had a little more rest having been injured, plus we will need a leader out there.

We've started stronger and the bench is weaker than I thought. Not sure how that bench can rescue anything if needed. It looks like we've gone with the thought that Palace would go weak, that we would get it won early and then allow the kids a bit of first team game time. That hasn't happened
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Crystal Palace ( Carabao Cup )
Post by: SaddVillan on October 30, 2024, 07:06:31 PM
Unai has been fairly unequivocal - the domestic cups aren't top priority - it's the League and Chumps comp.

Both have the potential to generate the money we need to build.

When we've got a squad of proper first teamers who we can rotate properly, then the Cups might come into view as proper targets, instead of nice to haves - which is what they are at the moment.

That might disappoint traditionalists, but it's our current reality.

Maybe we have bigger fish to fry but, in terms of realistically winning a trophy, this one is our best chance. Not sure the bench is strong enough to pull off a win if they are required.

Up to the Villa contenders/pretenders/returnees to show what they are worth.
I was unfortunately at the Everton game last year, I hope for all involved that the performance and  atmosphere is bette

Right team choice for the occasion, but looks like it's much higher up Palace's priority list, fielding a pretty much full strength side.

If 3 of our starting 11 weren't working their way back from injury, I'd think we could get something out of this, but I think it's going to be tough. If our name is in the hat for the next round, it will be a bonus.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Crystal Palace ( Carabao Cup )
Post by: AV84 on October 30, 2024, 07:20:32 PM
Not surprised with that line up. Emery has been clear where our priorities lie, and given the great start we've had in the CL, and how we haven't been great in the league games right after CL, he was always going to ring the changes for this one.

I'm not sure that Unai gave a stuff if Palace went strong or weak, the League Cup is a long way down his list of priorities and he sees it as a chance to give some returning injured players and some people on the fringes a run out.

We have a very strong squad now

Mings, Maartsen, Carlos, Kamara, McGinn, Bailey, Buendia, Duran all starting all big guns for me, all could start a league game without any eyebrows raised ( obvs when the come back kids are fit)
this is not Augustinson, Dendonker, Chambers, Olsen

Problem here is that those on the pitch tonight will have a second string mentality, feeling that they are not good enough for Emery’s main aims. This will end very badly special looking at the Palace line up.

Their manager is desperate for a win. Might save his job.

Our manager, is clearly thinking of the bigger picture. We might have to wait a year or two before we raise a cup over our heads.

Still a decent starting eleven but not good enough for glory.

It’s just taken me 7+ hours to drive from Sutton back to the old homestead in East London.
They closed the M25…

Anyway, I am well up for this cup tie after all that and I hope the Villa and Our Ty are buzzing as well 👍
Including our subs.
Young legs off the bench!

Very good, devilla and they have Ned and Diego in there to support Gauci, as well.
Duran, Buendia and SJM to score.

Boubacar back at last to boss the midfield.

Maatsen, Philogene and Bailey are all first team picks, as well, so more goals and heartache in store for CP.

It is an opportunity for them to show what they can do. What they can do might be lose to Palace, but it's as good an opportunity as Emery will get to see a lot of those names play in an actual competitive game, against decent opposition. Better to see it now than in March when the injuries have piled up and we've got to use some of them.

Gauci looks out of his depth entirely
Philogene and Buendia have been anonymous
Carlos has been shockingly poor, just abysmal.
Bailey has been rotten.

Nedejlkovic has been decent, as has Maatsen, Mings too.

Last season I could understand chucking it v Everton as we had a far weaker squad and had just started Europe and coping with the schedule.

This season we're already pretty much through to CL knock outs and in a decent placing for the league so I'd have liked a bit more emphasis on progressing in league cup.

Next season i reckon villa be lucky if 20k fans turn up if ee get a home tie

Yep, first one I’ve missed deliberately and purely because I knew we wouldn’t give a shit.

I thought it was wrong to give Kamara and Mings the full 90 mins. Both were blowing a gasket for the last 15 mins or so. Instead he brought on a young defender into midfield  :o Agreed on Buendia and Philogene sadly

That was a pretty strong side tbh. Putting 3 youngsters on in the last 15 minutes as if we were 4 nil up pretty much summed the motivation up.

Most of the team looked pretty poor apart from Kamara and the three young musketeers who came on at the end.

Not that bothered really. Bigger fish to fry and don’t think we need the extra games.

There’s no reason that starting line up could not have won.

A couple poor performances, but it’s good to get Mings, Buendia, Kamara and Kosta game time because we’ll need them later on.

We’ve got to prioritize.

There is such a disconnect between what the club wants and what the fans want.

There is a huge thirst for a trophy among the fans. We did top 4, can we not try and notch another actual achievement in the club honours? been way too long.

I concur, I equally thirst for a trophy. I hope it is one with massive handles, last seen early 80s.

Let's be honest, realistically we have/had more chance of winning the Cariabo Cup than the Champions league or the Premier League so why do we choose to not take it seriously.

I would like us to win whatever we’re in, I really would, but if we went on some mad domestic cup runs and we ballsed up a final league positions people would be going spare that we shouldn’t have prioritised the cups. It’s lose/lose unless we do brilliantly in everything.

I’d personally prioritise getting further/qualifying again for the competition we aren’t guaranteed to be in vs the one we’re in either way until we have the squad (and necessary revenue) to be competing on all fronts.

Heroes are Mings, Kamara and McGinn - the adults in the room - together with Ned, who I thought was very good, and Duran. Gold stars to all.

No stars for Buendia, so often caught in possession. Philogene was too lightweight (made Bailey look like a rock) and his decision making was appalling - criminal to pass up this opportunity to shine. Wasn’t impressed by Gauci in general and felt he might have done better with both goals. Maatsen had an unusually poor night, with a lot of misplaced passes.

Everyone else, passable.

We could have beaten these lot, even with all the changes.

We don't *need* trophies we need to finish top 5/6 and be in the champions league, without those things we don't have enough money to compete. You win one trophy and it gives you no cash. I'm not saying I like it but it's where we are at

Cash and Ramsey were on the bench, why not bring them on after 60 mins? Surely Barkley could have started next to Kamara? Onana should have been on the bench at a minimum, only played 45 mins last weekend. It's not really on to throw a load of randoms with very little game into a cup time and expect a performance. We were equally as bad in the previous round. After the late collapse last weekend, a strong positive performance would have set us up nicely for the weekend. But that triple sub tells you how much Emery cared about the game.

Less disapointed by the result then the performance.  A lot of the squad players provided more questions than answers.

Thought Mings and Kamara looked good considering how long they have been out.  Carlos, Gucci, Beundia and Jayden didnt help themselves.

The irony in that is between them, they represent about 70m of investment.  Beundia, I think possibly has been outgrown.  Im hoping that Jayden has more to offer - but currently were looking light for froward options, particularly with Bailey out of form.

Unfortunately typical domestic club game under Unai

Maybe Unai is more focused on the FA Cup when considering the domestic competitions.

I’m rather disappointed, I thought we could have won this after a couple of their key players went off injured early on.

The good bit is Mings playing and surviving 90 minutes!
Also, Kamara taking control of the midfield.

I disagree with the amount of  changes. As soon as the teams were out I knew we’d lose. It massively reduces our chances of winning silverware this season and saves us a maximum of 3 games. More than that it undermines the spirit and momentum we’re attempting to build which doesn’t help with the other competitions either.

But, only Cash and Ramsey on the bench with experience, who didn't even get on in the 2nd half?! Pointless playing the domestic cup competitions as this happens year on year.

I think on the amount of changes, we’re limited in where we can make big changes for a competitive (okay, given the way it panned out not very competitive from our side…) game without big repercussions. Not many league games you can chuck a youth in to see how they do or give someone coming back from injury 30 minutes without it being massive dissected afterwards if it goes wrong both at the time or the end of the season. But then will be blamed for not giving others a chance. No way to win that one.

The hardest thing tonight for me was walking back to the car trying to explain to a 9 year old why Villa seemed less bothered than usual about winning a game of football.
Remember when Holloway called us half arsed......it very much seemed that way tonight.
The history books will no doubt say something like 2024/25 season League Cup Winners Man U or Arsenal.
Not Villa
That hurts
