Title: Ipswich Town vs Aston Villa pre match thread
Post by: Toronto Villa on September 25, 2024, 10:31:32 AM
Sunday kick off. We don’t do clean sheets but we should have enough to beat this lot. Players rested and ready to go. 3-1 Villa.

Withe, Mortimer, McNaught for us.

Arnold Mühren for them.

Maybe I'm a snob but I find it difficult to get excited about games against these bumpkin/faux cockney types although I enjoyed a few trips there over the years. Add in a Sunday game and it's even more drab.

We should have more than enough but with Bayern looming large perhaps we'll be little under par which offers an opportunity for the opposition. The Manager was forthright with his assessment on both our first half performance against Wolfs and where he see the Rumbelows Cup in the order of priority so as half arsed as it was last night it will be professional, economical and effective in East Angular.

0-2

Went there the one and only time on the opening day in 1992, 5 or 6 of us sat in the middle of the home end, was starting to get a bit niggly with the home fans until our late equaliser revealed that there were pockets of Villa fans everywhere.

Away fans in the home ends at Villa : Fiasco, this is down to Heck's greed and selling GA+ to non-Villa fans. >:(

Villa fans in the 'home end' at away games : They were starting to get a bit niggly until it transpired there were loads of us.

Went there under Bruce in the Championship. Quite an easy ground to get to, a longish drive but one road all the way there. Easy to park and some decent pubs near the ground.

Yes thats a valid point and one its a tad concerning. If we still had enzo and illing jr i think we would be good squad wise. The squads a but unbalanced because evn if we had illing jr we are stacked in that position same with enzo.

We desperately needed a right back

As for sundays game i we go in favourites but wont be easy.  Wouldn't be suprised id this was our first draw of the season

Living in London 80/81, Monday's Evening News
(and probably the Standard) printed the Division
One league table with four teams in bold lettering
........ Arsenal, Tottenham, Palace - and Ipswich. Bit
Bit short of top sides in the capital back then. So
  London Ipswich it was.

Been there a few times, once for one of the worst games I've ever seen, settled by a comedy own goal by a lad named Chris Swailes who I'd never heard of before, or since. He probably kept us up, at least temporarily. Most goals did back then.

They've drawn three in a row. Feels very rare that promoted sides go four unbeaten at the start of a new season, so a nervy 1-0 to us I reckon.

I don't have it in me to predict a clean sheet. We could have 10 Mr. Creosotes in front of the goal all stacked up and I still wouldn't predict it.

Went there mid 90s I think when we were fighting relegation under Brian Little. We were terrible and Villa supporters started fighting amongst themselves then got a winner in injury time through  a complete defensive giveaway.

Caught the train back to London and sat with Mark Bosnich who was going out with John Fashanu.

I might of agreed before the Wycombe game but Barkley and Duran choked on the night when it was their chance to show Unai they should be starting. Having said that I don't think Barkley ever thought he had been signed to start many games. More of a cover player and impact sub at which he has done great so far.

Can't see anything other than a comfortable win.

0-3 Onana, Watkins and Buendia (coming on from the bench). Clean sheet for Emi.

Think we will make a few changes.

Martinez

Nedjelkovic Konsa Torres Digne

Onana Barkley Tielemans

Bailey Watkins Ramsey

Bring on Duran, Buendia and maybe even Mings or Kamara to get some minutes.

Given Ramseys minutes are clearly being managed I'd think we'd be far more likely to see rogers start if we went with that. For what it's worth I think they'll both start and Barkley will be on the bench because I can't see us going to a 3 in midfield. Right back will be interesting because I wouldn't be shocked to see Bogarde ahead of Ned again.

It's been a funny old season this far.  Results have been excellent, performances have been sporadically brilliant but too often lacking in concentration.  A statement victory against, what must be considered, relegation fodder would calm a lot of nerves and bring confidence.  5-0 would be a dream, but I can see it being 3-1 with Ipswich scoring either early doors or midway through the second half to make a nervous finish.  5-0 please Villa.

Ah, these lot.  My first ever game at Villa Park was a 1-0 defeat against them.  Do have a bad feeling we might drop points here, got to be focused on this one rather than Bayern on Wednesday, can't afford to be out run and fought.

Begrudgingly I'll say 1-1.

Famously, the players all make sure to read the H&V pre-match thread before deciding how seriously to take a fixture. It really matters to them what we losers, perverts and miscreants think about the game.

Went to the cup game in 81 when a bloke I vaguely knew from school lent me the money because he had no-one to go with. We’re still good mates to this day.

And at least one more time when a geezer called Killer from Castle Vale ‘borrowed’ a lorry from his work to take about 15 of us in the back. We kept it at the bloke from the paragraph above’s house on the Friday night, and he drove it over to Killer’s house on Saturday morning, and had two accidents in the first mile of the journey. (My mate had never driven a lorry before, and hadn’t even passed his driving test). Killer was caught on CCTV taking the lorry from his workplace and got the sack on the Monday morning.

There may have been other visits that I’ve forgotten.

As I'm a Villa fan in exile ive been to Ipswich a few times over the last few years and make no mistake this is a side capable of getting results against most team so we need to be sharp and come out of the blocks quickly then rest players for BM.

A good ground for opposition fans to visit though with a big pub directly over the road from the station designated for away fans.  Always has 5/6 real ales as well as the usual keg stuff and is no more than a 10 minute walk to the ground

I think Ipswich will score but Villa win 1-2 or 1-3

Once for the last time we played there and all I can remember is us getting snarled up in that massive carpark for 30 years afterwards.

The other time was to sex up a cute lad from IRC back in the day. I can't remember the sex, but we ate pizza and watched Demolition Man which I do remember was awful.

I've been to Ipswich twice.

Once for the last time we played there and all I can remember is us getting snarled up in that massive carpark for 30 years afterwards.

The other time was to sex up a cute lad from IRC back in the day. I can't remember the sex, but we ate pizza and watched Demolition Man which I do remember was awful.

I would like to live in a world where you clean your arse with sea shells, though.

I think this’ll be pretty tricky. We haven’t had a league game yet where we’ve been comfortable going into the closing stages. We’re doing well, but you could look at our fixtures and say we’ve basically got what we’d expect to get. That’s not a criticism of us, we’re getting the wins we need to, scoring some lovely goals, and getting points on the board. But there will be sterner challenges ahead and we need to get much more durable when it comes to defending.

It will be tricky. Ipswich will be bouyed after that late equaliser at Southampton. We definitely need to start defending better sooner rather than later.

No, we don't talk about Bayern until after Ipswich because injuries, mood etc. can change. One game at at a time is good enough for Unai, it should be good enough for us.

Yet since asking for request of Bayern Munich  I read people talk about being affiliated with Stealing, Drugs and Sexual encounters!!

On actual topic if any of Travis Patterson, Borland, Jimoh-Aloba or Broggio start or play any part then they should be given own thread.
Let's all do our best to keep an eye and see how or if they play again after the Wycombe match, they could have some roles to play in domestic cups or matches against teams like this Ipswich especially as the major match against Bayern Munich is coming up.

I'm not creating any threads till the start of November onwards, which leaves me in a dilemma but if people feel inclined in the meantime, threads for these players are more than welcomed. The small Scot Borland is being compared to Luka Modric!

It's a watching brief to see how many minutes these players may get in next month.

I remember the game there in 2000 when Nilis's brief Villa career came to a sad end.

Absolutely terrible. You could hear the bone go as he got caught. He had shown what he could do in the previous game when he scored an absolute beauty. If he had not been injured I wonder where we might have finished that season?

I clearly pointed out that Killer merely borrowed the lorry for the weekend.

If it hadn’t been for an altercation between Killer and some Ipswich fans, which necessitated the opening of the roller door on the back of the lorry and us lot jumping out to remonstrate with said Tractor Boys on behalf of our friend, which led to the police becoming involved, which led to the licence plate being checked, which meant the firm that owned the lorry was informed, which led to the CCTV at the depot being watched, Killer would almost certainly still work there, model employee such as he was.

Not really, just common sense. We played Tuesday, so a Saturday game would have spaced out the games evenly before Wednesday. Ipswich didn’t play in the week and play next Saturday.

I see our awkward cousins are at home today - maybe that’s the reason. In which case, priorities have been somewhat twisted.

Otherwise it’s purely a TV issue - but again, it just seems silly.

Fairly common as well, but I don't think it makes that much difference, and most managers bring it up (like Bingo) to have it in reserve as a handy excuse should they lose.

Who are our awkward cousins? And the game is away in Suffolk, there's no policing to worry about ie two local teams playing near each other at the same time. It's purely for TV.

I think we'll be fine. We've got lots of players who are potential leaders; like Youri who has played Champions League football with two different teams, has bags of high level international experience with Belgium and actually won the FA Cup with Leicester. Torres who's got lots of European experience, and Konsa who more than knows his way around. Add in Martinez of course, and potentially Mings in a few weeks, and that's a heck of a lot of experience and ability. McGinn will still be an important squad member when he's fit, but I don't think he'll be first choice in a lot of matches.

Me too which means potentially for Fulham away him Mings and Kamara will all be available.

---------- Martinez ----------
Bogarde Konsa Torres Digne
---- Onana -- Tielemans----
Ramsey ------------ Rogers
--- Watkins ---- Bailey -----

Swap Ramsey to the left, Bailey to the right and Rogers alongside Watkins and it'll be that.

We’ll miss his leadership at times, I think. Would have been happier with us being led out by a player with his depth of intuition of what the game was about, so to speak.

Yes, all true, Risso. Plus Ollie.
I also get the feeling you hint at that this break is the beginning of the end for McGinn as an automatic pick in the first eleven.

If he’s fit, wouldn’t surprise me to see Carlos in at the expense of Bogarde, and Konsa at RB.
Think this game will be much tighter than it looks on paper.
Actually, think it would be a good game to start Barkley in, though I think it not especially likely.

I think McGinn's the type that as soon as you can start to see the writing on the wall for him, he responds and ups his levels and proves his worth again.

Our chances of winning this game have dramatically improved, now that we can't go top. (Without a cricket score)

Ipswich 2 Villa 1

Sorry folks, I just feel it in my water.

Entirely possible. We’ll need to be right on it to win, no defensive lapses please.

Martinez or Tielemans. A nice result puts us 2nd and the table looks good.

…or that Dogtanian could be female?

Does anyone think it might be Konsa? He'd be my pick.

Can't see it. Maybe Mings once he's back . Shame Mings isn't quite ready for tomorrow as this could have been billed the "Tyrone Mings Derby" . He's here, he's there

I do think people’s default on gender neutral names on here is that they are male though. I do that & I’m female! I’m often surprised when I realise I’ve been reading someone’s posts for years thinking they’re a bloke & then suddenly realise they’re a woman!

I do agree that we make assumptions that everyone is male on a football forum.

I wonder what the ratio is? I always think women have something better to do with their lives than interact with some pricks on here, but understand I'm stereotyping. When I'm online and playing someone called sniperlegend4, I know that's a sad bloke with a big ego.

To be fair "mate" is gender neutral, albeit a bit "blokey".

Still very early in the season but looking at the table it feels like 3 points would be massive today. A loss and we allow 4 teams to keep in touch with us. A win and we're 4 points clear of 5th place.

We should really be beating them, but we should really have beaten Sheffield Utd at Christmas too.

A clean sheet and a two or three goal winning margin should be perfectly achievable.  It's what title candidates do.

After losing their first 2 matches to Liverpool and Man City, Ipswich haven't done too badly, Kieran McKenna has done a superb job there in securing back to back promotions for the club.

Confident of a win today, as long as we don't put on a display similar to the first hour last week, gonna be interesting to see, if Unai is going to put out his strongest line up.

Usual lazy analysis from Alan Smith on SSN. Talking about Barkley replacing McGinn, and maybe Tielemans as an option. It’s almost as if he wasn’t playing right-midfield all season and directly replaced by Bailey when he got injured last week.
