Man that bench. We really are limited but a good opportunity for some youngsters

Have we ever won a game at the cash has been in midfield?

Post by: Rigadon on May 09, 2024, 06:57:41 PM
Well he’s playing the only fit senior players at this stage.  That toght wing with Konsa and Cash should be defensively solid as a rock but it’ll be blunt going forward.

Like somebody said above, where is Alex Moreno?

Must admit was hoping for a real surprise with one or two back so my positivity has dismissed also.

It needs to stick up top with Watkins and n9t come straight back at us.

Luis, mcginn, Diaby you owe us a performance Fter last week.

Come on Villa pull one out of the bag

Bet365 are offering 35-1 on Olympiakos to win in extra time. You have to do a bet builder that has that plus both teams to score. Unless we both score it can’t end that way.

Or you can get 18-1 on Olympiakos to win on pens. I’ve had a fiver in both

The thing is that after last week, I actually feel (probably wrongly!) fairly resigned about tonight. Maybe it’s the performances of the last couple of weeks, or the corrupt referee- or just because I’ve been dealing with estate agencies and mortgage companies all day… but I just don’t want to be embarrassed.

So come on you Villa boys. If we have to bow out, bow out with pride.

We'll never have a weaker/younger bench again or in the past (Liverpool in the FA Cup, perhaps). Mental. This will be an incredible achievement if we pull it off.

Senior players missing:

1. Moreno
2. Mings
3. Tielemans
4. Ramsey
5. Rogers
6. Kamara
7. Buendia
8. Zaniólo
9. Chambers (our own fault we didn't register him but still...)

Out of intetest, Patterson is a left sided attacking midfielder, apparently. Munroe is Declan Rice's cousin, plays CB and LB. Young is a right sided winger, I think.

Come on, Villa!
Emery has the players to carry out his plan to get us to the final!
It's an excellent challenge for them
Martinez a leader and it is great that he is back.

I believe those that show up here tonight, hoping the entire team, the match winners, are the ones demonstrating their quality and able to show their top performance levels when it matters
Diaby and Watkins finishing for goals last week were great.
I hope Bailey Watkins and Diaby will be on fire!! And McGinn and Douglas Luiz excel and show how good they are.
The manger will guide the team but it's now about the players on the big occasion !

Vamos!

True, but i think with everyone fit i'd only really have Kamara in for either Carlos or Cash and Rogers for Diaby. I think Moreno v Digne is much of a muchness and Tielemans and Ramsey maybe not quite Luiz and McGinn. That said, i get the point about strength in depth but not really much of an excuse not to beat these over 2 legs, a shame we've set ourselves a tough job to turn it around.
I can see a good preformance incoming but whether it's enough to turn it around is the question.

They've got 6 men behind the ball every time we're in the final third, then we're just far too slow and pedestrian to break them down. Konsa to Cash to Konsa, back and forth. Awful.

Bailey is clearly playing with a knock.

It was worth the risk. An early goal or two blast in the first 10/15 here could've changed the complexion of the tie.

But prob better of we sub him at the interval so he can maybe give us 30/40 mins of effectiveness against the Redscouse and Palace.

I said it in his thread months ago, but he has no idea what's going on.. truly. Bailey turned it over a lot last year, but at least he would get into decent positions and contribute to the build up. Diaby is not good when combining going forward, has a hard time beating a defender 1v1 and makes clumsy mistakes. At Leverkusen they just led him into space and let him fly up and down the right side. We don't play that way.

It's painful to watch and I'm hoping he can come good next year, but man is he just plain awful sometimes. No fire, no passion, no strength physically or mentally.. just moseying around, aimlessly without a care.

We are playing well, we basically own the ball, but this lot are going to park the bus and then stick an oil tanker in front of it now, and they can do that mostly because of one second of switching off tonight on our part.

I think we are playing pretty well too. If we only needed one I'd be feeling confident.
They are letting us have the ball but we have done nothing with it

Whatever happens it's a great run in Europe. We were a long way off that not so long ago.
This. The misery merchants (some of whom were not apparently bothered about the Conference) should remember where we were a few seasons ago.

I have no idea how people can slag these players off week in week out, best villa team in 28 years, hands down.

Not played badly up until their box when the final ball/shot has been Sunday league level. Poor goal for us to concede which took any possible nerves out of Olympiakos.

If we don't get at least 1 in the first 10 minutes of the second half I'd be taking Watkins, McGinn, Bailey, Diaby and Luiz off for a rest

Luiz with his regulation yellow .

It just occurred to me how most of his yellows come from how exposed the team is through the middle. Some of that is his fault, of course, but not all of it (spoiler: it's probably Diaby's fault, and I hate piling in on him but man, he's having a horrible time of it recently).

Awful defending from Torres for the goal, but it was Diaby that gave it up cheaply in their box that started it. Diaby has been a complete and utter waste of a shirt. We are strolling out of the competition, not even bothered enough to have a go.

We must be saving it all for Liverpool (though I very much doubt it).

Diaby and Watkins not at it at all yet. Best Luiz and McGinn have played in weeks but the goal didn't come. Zombie like defending for their goal from Konsa and Torres. Carlos brainfart in first minute should have been enough of a warning.

If we get one back before 60 mins then I think we can still make it interesting. Might aswell bring on Duran for Carlos at the break.

Duran for Diaby at half time please.  We’re all over this average Joe bunch of jammy ****** but lacking a cutting edge (Diaby).
Watkins gets a pass then?

Yeah cause he’s been our best player all season and doesn’t keep losing the ball this evening.
That doesn't matter at this point. What has Watkins done during this game? I agree that Diaby has been playing with the Benny Hill theme today but we need Watkins to fucking score, which he is far from doing.

They don't look all that clever on crosses and their keeper seems a tad flappy.

I'd stick Duran on and sling some crosses in.
Yet they still make a flukey save.
Down the other end and that flies into the top corner

I thought exactly the same.

El Kaabi could get a prem contract next season. He's proved himself banging in 4 against a prem defence. The promoted teams might take him or someone like fulham

Once upon a time scoring against would be the prerequisite for him being our summer signing... and not cutting it.  I reckon week-in, week-out he's no better than a ten goal a season Premier League signing.

It’s been a long hard season. We’re carrying a lot of injuries. I for one feel proud to be a Villa fan. After the years of mediocrity. We’ve done so well. I can’t help remembering where we were when Unai arrived.
This team is really tired. Diaby hasn’t settled yet. Remember Bailey’s first year. They will come good. Maybe not tonight.

Fanally a shot in anger. We have had a lot of possession with bery little to show for it.

Cash & Diaby are not anywhere need good enough.

Cash is a stat padder. He has more of the ball than anyone and is content to take a touch and pass it square, regardless of the match sitaution, (we need 3 goals man!).

This may see controversial to some, but I would also sell Luiz in the summer if Arsenal come in with the rumoured £80m offer. I think there is better to be had elsewhere, (i.e., Wharton at Crystal Palace).

Digne sold him out with that nothing pass to be honest. Luiz still gets outmuscled in duels too often.
Good to see them watering the pitch as it seemed bone dry in the first half.

Cash is doing my head in
You and me both who even uses cash anymore.
Today he's failing his audition for showing any sense of understanding of footy intelligence he is a trier and never lacks any effort but If there any role left for him it would be where he is today as an option but he's so unsure.

He's more likely to be trusted than Duran or Kellyman.
Credit to him in Lille but think he's letting side down in finding a solution when he's in possession.

To be honest, I’ve given up watching it and gone downstairs to watch something else. Europe was great fun while it lasted and it’s been awesome to see Villa back in Europe.

We’ve been blighted by injuries, poor performances, a small squad. And probably a lack of European experience. We have ridden our luck quite a few times too.

I’m proud of this team and this season. I just hope that Spurs screw it up now - we have the Europa league at least next season. And this has been valuable experience for our squad.

We go again.

Better to think of the many moments of quality we've experienced under Emery thus far.

There's always a fear we could chuck in the sort of performance we did first leg and against Stevenage. And I don't think this mob are a whole pile better than Stevenage, in all honesty. But we kicked on and then some after that farce.

A lesson once again to some of ours, if it were ever needed. We're not big enough just to turn up and have sides fold on name and reputation alone. We'll get more of this next year whether it's Europa League or CL. We better be ready for it.

Probably the most disappointing thing about tonight is all the years we've had to watch great European comebacks from Liverpool, Man Utd, et al. and then listen to the never-ending eulogies.  We had a chance to write ourselves into folklore and have not even laid a glove on bang-average opposition.

Spot on mate. I can't criticise them for the drop in the performances. These players have nothing left to give.

Every second post in this thread is a knackered player is being described as 'wank' etc, I think it's a disgrace given the sheer effort of these players all season.
Someone will be starting an Emery out thread soon.

That's it then.

Put emotions to one side, sit down, pour a bloody big drink and reflect.

We can trot out the reasons - injuries, fatigue etc., but the underlying cause is insufficient quality and depth in the squad.

Now I'm not criticising, a successful squad takes two or three transfer windows, possibly even four, to put together. Unai's had a summer and  a January.

If there's one upside to our season tailing off is that it shines a light on the weaknesses in the squad.

Pretty sure Unai/Monchi knew what they were, but this will certainly focus things.

Finish 4th, take a step back and review 2023-24 - the positives and the negatives and take stock.

Move out  players who aren't up to the required standard, raise some cash through appropriate sales, bring in better quality, get our injured players back, and let's go again in August.

Not only have we a massive injury list we’ve got Bailey and Torres being nursed through games.
How this squad are sitting in 4th is a miracle, they’ve all worked their balls off all season and now we’ve hit a wall.
Thankfully we’ve got an extra day off until the next game but I’ll be giving them all a standing ovation no matter what the result.
I won’t be calling players out or abusing them because they’ve done this club proud and now they need us to try and push them over the line.

I’m fucking proud of them. I know the results hasn’t been good but fuck me what a season it’s been so far. I’ve very sad that it’s ended this way, but it’s still a miracle we’ve even got here.

Spot on.

Maybe Gordon wouldn't come here? At the time it was understood Diaby was about our third choice behind Williams and somebody else.

I totally agree. Managing a European campaign isn't easy and its the first time for many of our players. Good prep for next season when chasing a nicer trophy.

This isn't a disgrace or embarrassing or anything like that. It was clear from the Brighton game, this team simply has nothing left to give.

Credit José  Mendilibar but disappointed to have to listen to all Olympiaco talk by Crouch and Hutton the focus and analysis should be on Villa.
When the likes of the big six lose they always talk about them
Lets have some more focus on Villa TNT

Top 4 was alway the aim given we had a chance. Big summer of ins and outs and hoping Spurs keep being Spurs for at least one game.

Dare I say it, no plan B?  For instance move the ball quickly with purpose?

Was going to take a miracle after their early goal. Strong first half but so flat in the second. Congrats to Olympiacos, comfortably beating an EPL team over 2 legs is a fair achievement.

As for tonight, there really was no need to play a back 5, wing backs wasted nearly every ball they got in a decent area. Midfield two started well but barely broke sweat after half time. Bailey kept going despite a few heavy knocks. Diaby was really poor and Watkins was well held. Duran was a prat when he came on, justifying Emery's decision not to start him perhaps.
