Thought this deserved its own thread rather than getting lost in the post-match debates. Well done Heidi and all medical staff
If it wasn't for the quick thinking and heroic actions of Heidi Elliott, an Aston Villa fan may have lost his life on Thursday night.
The trainee paramedic, who is a season ticket holder in the Holte End, jumped over several rows of seats in front of her to save someone's life on the stroke of half-time in Villa's Europa Conference League semi-final first leg against Olympiacos.
After noticing the 24-year-old was in cardiac arrest, Heidi delivered CPR as paramedics rushed to the incident and called for fans to vacate the L2 block in the lower Holte. The public announcer told fans, "supporters must clear Holte End lower L2 immediately."
The power of social media managed to identify Heidi, who spoke to BBC WM radio earlier this morning about the incident.
"I’m okay, a bit overwhelmed but all good,” she said. “I’m a season ticket holder with my dad. We did the usual, went for dinner and then made our way to the ground and watched the first half. Villa scored late on in the first half.
"It seemed like any other game up until half-time really. About four or five rows in front of us there was a commotion, with a large group of people waving trying to get the attention of stewards. That caught my eye and when I looked over I saw the young lad on the floor, bless him.
"He didn’t look well and I could tell that something was wrong. I looked where the paramedics where but we didn’t have their attention yet. That’s why I thought I can’t just stand there at that point and I had to go down and help.
"I’m doing my paramedic degree, so I said I could help and let me get near him. There was a lot of people trying to offer their assistance as well. It worried me that there was a lack of recognition that he was in cardiac arrest.
"It’s about looking at the patient, are they responding to you, checking if they are breathing, checking for a pulse. If both are absent then they are in cardiac arrest and it’s imperative that CPR is started as soon as possible. I work for East Midlands ambulance service, they do courses through the British Heart foundation, so I’d encourage anyone to do that.
"When I got to him he was already in cardiac arrest. Immediately I started CPR. There were a few fans around encouraging me to get him in the recovery position, but I recognised that it wasn’t necessary at the time. It was more important that we got the CPR started. I knew the paramedics would be on scene to start a defibrillator. To start with that CPR is really important. The defibrillator came and administered shocks to the patient and then the paramedics took over.
"When the professionals get there as such, continuous chest compressions was really important. Also in the area we were in the rescue press would have been difficult to deliver. It was more important just to do the CPR, it is the most important part of it.
"I think the main thing that I’d push from this whole experience is to encourage everyone to look at the British Heart Foundation. If people haven’t had the training, it’s a life-saving skill and you never know when you’ll need to use it."
Shortly after Heidi performed CPR and the patient was shocked, an ambulance backed up between the Holte End and the Doug Ellis Stand to take him to hospital. His father posted on social media: "He is in hospital but sitting up and well waiting tests. Thank you to the amazing staff and supporters and emergency services who saved his life."
As medics walked down the stairs with the patient, both Villa and Olympiacos fans from all sides of the stadium clapped. The public announcer then said: "We'd like to thank the medical staff for their prompt assistance this evening."

Excellent - thanks for sharing.
-
Good to hear and quick actions from Heidi.
-
Great news: definitely puts things in perspective!

Great stuff.
-
Heidi Elliot, what a hero.
-
An absolute Villa Angel - well done Heidi
-
Her words are so eloquent and educational whilst letting the story of the events unfold.
Fantastic work from her helping save someone’s life.
-
I've often thought some basic training should be compulsory at schools etc, i've left it as a long link so as folks can see what it is and may want to try it.

Brilliant! Heidi Elliot obviously knows her stuff. Whether she likes it or not she is a hero. She should be very proud of her training and actions. The lad sitting up in bed moaning about the result would fit very well in here. Get well soon, fella.
-
The club should ensure she never has to pay for a season ticket ever again.
-
The club should ensure she never has to pay for a season ticket ever again.
But on the basis she pays the £1500 for the Terrace View.
-
Heidi, great name, great heroine.
-
Glad the young fella is OK, and well done to Heidi. Somebody on Twitter said there was a second similar incident in the North, did anybody hear anything about that?
-
Amazing stuff.
-
Absolutely wonderful news that hopefully this young lad will be ok and that Heidi was there and saved his life. She will hopefully be recognized by the club in some way.
Is it too soon to suggest that incident likely happened to Josh because of our defending last night.
-
I think last nights first half would have raised the blood pressure, heart rate and numerous other health stress factors of many people myself included. I checked my Sports watch at half time and my heart rate had averaged about 110bpm when my normal resting heart rate is about 50-60bpm. Stressful stuff this football supporting malarkey!
The other good thing about it happening at the football is the likelihood someone will be able to donCPR and the availability of paramedics and Defib. I saw a stat last year that only 1 in 10 people survive a cardiac arrest.
And well done to that young lady Heidi and glad to hear the lad is ok.
-

Not sure about ever again, but definitely next season.
Best seats in the house for her & her dad.
-
similar incident in the North, did anybody hear anything about that?
Well I did wonder whether I'd have a heart attack the way the game was going.
-
Best news from the night & certainly puts things into perspective.
Great work from Heidi, great work from the medical teams, paramedics, doctors, hospital, family, etc.
And great from the young lad who was complaining about result to end the situation with some dry humour from the dad.
-
Brilliant work by this lady. Well done Heidi. A true hero.
-
I took this pic of my telly during the delayed KO not knowing what was going on.

Thank you for the update.
Will keep in thoughts of the family.
-
So good to see a seemingly positive outcome…didn’t look it at the time…when you see what is obv CPR being administered you fear the worst. To the guy in Witton Lower that I found myself screaming at from Witton Upper to stop recording on his phone and show some respect…what does that achieve!
Heidi is a legend and deserves every plaudits he is receiving for responding so promptly and giving the lad every chance to survive
-
Good to read, thanks.
-
Amazing stuff - and well done to all the staff and services
-
Brilliant news.
-
I thought the OP was going to be about the Chelsea vs Spuds game ...
... seriously, it was impressive to see the way that the club facilitated the 'rescue' - of course it was made to happen by Heidi's quick actions.
BTW, in the Upper Holte, far left as you look at the pitch, there was an incident in the first half: anyone know what that was all about?
-
Glad the young fella is OK, and well done to Heidi. Somebody on Twitter said there was a second similar incident in the North, did anybody hear anything about that?
I was in the upper North last night and there were some stewards, paramedics and police around in the 2nd half but I couldn't see what was going on.
-
Delighted he's ok and she sounds an absolute star.
-

Went to a Brighton game ss a neutral last season and there was a video on at half-time featuring a Forest fan who had suffered a cardiac arrest there and survived. They went on to say that there had been seven cardiac arrests there since they had installed some defibrillators around the ground and all seven people had survived.
-
I was in K2 and saw how quickly she reacted and how hard she worked until other help arrived. Heidi absolutely deserves all the plaudits she is getting.
Edit: Just opened Twitter and saw this.

Thank you for this and the news above.
Well done Heidi, as rumours around the ground upon leaving were that it could be very bad news.
-
Wow, great news that he's on the mend and well done Heidi - not all superheroes wear capes.
-
Well done Heidi, glad this ended up with the lad moaning about the result rather than anything more serious.
-
Heidi is a fucking legend! Well done and so glad the dude is ok and moaning in hospital.
Best result and get well soon to the dude who was taken I’ll.
-

I was in the upper North last night and there were some stewards, paramedics and police around in the 2nd half but I couldn't see what was going on.
In the last pages of the match thread, someone seems to state some punches were thrown in the Upper North by a right knob. Might have been that.
-
I’ve often thought if something terrible like that happens, a football ground is just about the best place to be. I was in the Witton Lane Upper at that end and the reaction and treatment was second to none. Well done to Heidi.
-
Really pleased that the young man is ok and joined in with the rest of us in moaning at the result! Well done all involved, super job.
-
Amazing lady.
Deserves all the positive messages coming her way and so pleased that the young man involved is moaning at the result!
-
Is it just me or do there seem to be loads more incidents like this at football matches than when I was a kid?
-
The interview with Heidi is here, starts at 14 mins in

-
Is it just me or do there seem to be loads more incidents like this at football matches than when I was a kid?
Over a million people have watched games at VP this season, i'd imagine it's statistically likely that a couple will sadly have issues at some stage.
-

It looked like there was an incident in lower Witton too but seemed to be dealt with pretty quickly
-
Fantastic good news story. Kindness + plus skills will always conquer.
-
The club should ensure she never has to pay for a season ticket ever again.
Totally.
-
Great to hear such news.
Well done to Heidi. What a star.
-

I think they are dealt with in the ground now, with games being stopped etc. whereas I suspect before everything just carried on so it was less obvious.
-

My niece who was in the Upper North seemed to suggest to me it was a similar incident to the 24 year old, however she is an unreliable 15 year old so I'll have to ask my brother on Sunday.
-

We said exactly the same at half time. My mom had to wait 17 hours for an ambulance 18 months ago and if this young lad had been anywhere else he possibly wouldn’t have got help in time.
-

Indeed. Forty thousand people are bound to include someone with the medical knowledge for any type of emergency, there will be an ambulance crew there and almost certainly they will have a plan for every eventuality.
-
Can I say what a knob the young 20-something was who decided to stand by the gangway in L4, stand on the seats so that he could get as many photos as possible as the incident was unfolding. When I challenged him and said that a fellow Villa fan was probably experiencing a serious medical episode, his response was that he was taking photos of the police - I laughed in his face and told him to stop immediately.
-
Is it just me or do there seem to be loads more incidents like this at football matches than when I was a kid?
There wasn't the "fuss" made as much. Games wouldn't be stopped, stadium sections wouldn't be cleared. You might see the some stewards and ambulance staff go into the crowd at a certain section of the ground but then carry on watching the match if it wasn't close enough to view it. It would be lucky to even be mentioned in any post match reports.
Now the medical emergencies are more overt, they get noticed more by fans at the ground and on TV as the play is stopped, or as in our game the start is delayed.

Thats shocking behaviour but not surprising as we, like any other club have our fair share of absolute knobheads.
-
Great news and well done Heidi brilliant work and hopefully the club will make her a special guest for the Liverpool match.

It's the vaccine ennit?
I actually had a row with the young headcase who sits in front of me about that very thing and it was the second time I'd had that sort of exchange that day. People still think the whole Covid thing was a scam.

Absolutely it's allowed.

Although if she hasn't got a season ticket, that is a long queue of people ahead of her...........

Absolutely it's allowed.
All done and donated a few pennies.
Wouldn't have known about this without H & V's.
Thanks.
Puts football in perspective :)
Yep, hope they do something special for her.
-
What a great story. Well done Heidi and all the others that came to his aid.
That message from his dad absolutely wrecked me.
-
Is a thousand pounds going to be enough to buy a season ticket for the Villa next year. ;-)

Aston Villa doing the right thing for the last 150 years.
Well done young lady - your parents must be so very proud of you (being a Villa fan ;))
-
Fantastic news. And it was great by the person to help another in time of need. It's a triumph and the family can be proud. And of course continue to wish for full recovery on the person who life she saved.
Thank The Lord.
