Title: Aston Villa vs Newcastle pre-match thread
Post by: Smirker on January 27, 2024, 02:38:10 PM
Tuesday  8)

The return of league football. Been having withdrawal symptoms.

Come on!

I think we'll win by two or three.

FTF.

Hopefully Newcastle pick up a couple of key knocks tonight and we rediscover our goal scoring touch on Tuesday.

3-1 Ollie to get back into the swing of things and go on another scoring streak. 2 for him and 1 late on for Doug from the spot. The punchable Almiron for them.

I'm expecting a good performance and home win. This game may tell us a lot about how the rest of the season pans out, need a convincing performance to get back to the heights of early Dec.

Another nil nil. You wait for one of them under Emery (actually, you don't. You never want to see one again) and suddenly we can't stop not conceding and not scoring.

As long as it doesn't turn into a spring 1992 situation we'll be grand...

Monday SUE sits the team down and they watch the opening game of the season and everyone realises we owe these mugs a proper pasting.

Hope it rains goals down on them and Watkins leads the charge.

That is all true. However we are a top 4 side with more than enough to put the jawdies in their place. We need to start thinking like a top 4 side and expecting to win against all mid table sides.

Er, just watching the VillaOnTour youtube video of the Chelsea game and yer man Max mentioned that Kamara's missus was due another enfant(e) this week.

Given our generosity re paternity leave to Donk and Olsen in recent times, are we about to be fecked by Boubacar spending extended time at home with his brood?

For all that we have a few players missing, they have even more out.

Fancy us to beat them at home, we usually do.

I'll say 2-1, with Callum Wilson killing himself to get back and play and score in this match, for them.

I dreamt we beat them 3-2 last night, only it was away and I was listening to updates on Talksport which I never do, and we were away.

It went something like

5'   0-1 Watkins.
68  1-1 No idea.
77  2-1 No idea again but it was a move involving Luke Shaw who doesn't even play for them.
85  2-2 Morgan Rogers.
88  2-3 Morgan Rogers.

So I'll go for 3-2 tomorrow night, mainly because I don't have any other considered opinion at this point.

Bit more than that...didn't he effectively go on strike to force through the move to Newcastle. All this while Everton were fighting relegation and obviously a home town player to boot.

We need to get in front early to both build our confidence and reinforce any concerns they have. If they score first or it is 0-0 for a while it becomes tricky I think.

Since Emery arrived we've been excellent at home against all the top sides. The only time we've had any real problems was the 2 games against Arsenal. We won one & should have drawn the other. A win tomorrow will put a huge points gap between us & them. Whilst Newcastle might be good side at home they are very average away from home.

Get the first goal.

I've had a bad feeling about this game for a while, signs and portents everywhere.

I think it's because of the disappointment over Christmas, followed by the break in the league, and the fact that we are coming out of it with just as bad an injury list.

Plus, this is the game I would hate to lose.

I am having cannelloni for tea, which surely suggests Zaniolo is going to play a big part? And the saucy video I was watching last night was definitely French, so Diaby on the scoresheet?

Does anyone know who invented the potato waffle?

Not so sure, as we went with the narrow 4-4-2 formation against them at home last year and it worked a treat.  If we were to go with that formation again then only change to the above team woukd be Diaby in for Bailey I guess.

These are about 500 ST seats where ST holders can't be there so they are selling their seats through the club. These resales are only put up when ground is sold out.

You'd imagine they've just released the resale tickets, which is a bit late.  You're right it's a surprising amount.

8.15 kick off on a school night is very late, with extra time now it's probably not going to finish til at least 10.30, so a lot of people won't be getting home until after 11.30. Be closer to 1am for me.

They wont release resale tickets until all the seats are sold.
All the ones that were left were single seats.
Its piss poor.

Yeah, I hate this kick-off time, it's disgusting. I can never go straight to bed after I get in either, so by the time I've had a cuppa and chilled for a bit, it's going to be midnight.

And they wonder why we “don’t sell out”. Almost like they want it to look like there’s no need for the capacity increase.

Yep, three of the ST holders i know in our village, they’re all in the more mature category, and they’re all giving this game a miss.

But we are sold out. ST resales, only put up after all tickets are gone, are just extra money for the club.

Wait til we go all España on audiences' asses and kick off after the 9pm threshold (players swearing is then free to be picked up by the mics).

Martinez

Cash
Konsa
Lenglet
Moreno

McGinn
Luiz
Kamara
Bailey

Tielemans
Watkins

Almost certainly will be this. Unless Emery wants to try to play Diaby into form, in which he could be in in place of Tielemans, but I'd definitely choose this starting line up.

Tielemans looked rusty on Friday, so needs to play, so id go with this team as well. Seems sure to start Bailey with him only get three mins on Friday

Maybe me just being cynical in thinking they might use the “through the gates” number as a way of backing up their point.

Just looking on the club's website, it now seems that there about 700 tickets for this game available for purchase.

Last season we somewhat abandoned passing out from the back against this lot. It worked a treat and we have to do the same tonight along with dropping a bit deeper.
I’m sure they’ll have singled out Lenglet as a weak point which I believe he is. They rely on pace and there’s not much more to their game, negate that and it’s a 2-0 Villa win.

They are all returned ST seats, they dont put them on sale until all of the other seats have been sold, which must have been this morning.

Beat them tonight and I think we finish any remote chance of them getting back into CL race.

It's the kind of night we need one of our attacking players to step up.....a goal from outside the box or some kind of moment of magic around it. I think we should dominate in midfield again and if we avoid individual errors a third clean sheet in a row is achievable.

I think we will do it but will be a struggle, 1-0 (McGinn).

Why is it 8:15? Won't be home till way past my bedtime. Fair play to the Newcastle fans who come down, I wouldn't be doing that.

Second season in a row I'm missing this as I'm working in the northeast, again. Or still. Fifth or sixth job up here on the bounce. I might be starting to pick up an accent. But I digress...
I hope in about 4 hours time I'm as equally pissed off and elated as I was last April.

A while ago I'd have been hoping for a reverse of the opening day result, but I'd take a comfortable 1-0 win now. Just get some good performamces and 3 points rolling in again.
