Villa win.

I’d go

Olsen

Cash
Chambers
Lenglet
Digne

Dendonker
Luiz
Tielemans
Ramsey

Diaby
Duran

This means the whole back 5 can be rested for next week at Brentford.

It means also McGinn, Kamara, Watkins and Bailey also get rested for Brentford.

Of course Unai will know best but it’s what I’d be tempted to do.

Olsen hasn't been in the last two squads though so assume he's carrying some sort of injury.

For the first time ever I'd actually choose to start Olsen for this if he's fit. Whatever team we put out really should get a draw there at least. Even if we lose by one we probably end up winning the group.

I wouldn't personally.  If we are going to.make a lot of changes, I think we could do with the reassurance that Emi Martinez brings and would make him skipper for the evening.

I want us to focus on the next 3 league games.
I would leave as many as our first X1 at home was we can.

I doubt anyone will be left at home unless they're injured. I don't think we have a big enough squad to fill the bench unless majority of the team travels.

I'd have had them sectioned.

So the likelihood:

McGinn said in his interview after the match that the players are getting two days off (Sunday Monday ) and that he hoped "Bosnia wouldn't be cold." That fully implies he's involved and likely starting as he does as Captain every Match.

And Emery said to give the players two days rest to enjoy themselves and the moment and then focus on Bosnia

Yes I agree. Our worst display was against Forest, after a full week of rest.
Title: Re: Zrinjski Mostar v Aston Villa pre-match

Torres doesn't usually start the European games, if he plays them at all, so I assume that will continue with Lenglet playing.

Carlos is usually a starter there too but has played a lot this week, but so has Konsa, so I don't know what the answer is there, unless Chambers gets a look in. Seems unlikely though.

Cash will start, and probably Digne, given Moreno will likely have to play the full game at Brentford.

Zaniolo and probably JJ are definite in midfield, I'd think. Donk, and maybe Luiz too given he's not playing Brentford. Durán instead of Watkins too. Diaby over Bailey.

I think we can still rest a fair few but most of them will still travel, even if they just sit wrapped in blankets all evening.

Olsen
Cash
Chambers
Lenglet
Digne
Zaniolo
Luiz
Donk
JJ
Diaby
Durán

That's a fairly well changed 11 but you can't fill a bench without using the ones we're hoping don't have to play.

We do have the b squad who could do that. Saying that, there are not many of that team I have heard of apart from Chrisene and Kaden Young. I'm guessing Tim needed to be named in the main squad because of his age and wasn't.

Anyone who watches the youth regularly know if any of the other list are available (not on loan) and good enough to be given game time?

I think Chambers is unlikely too, but it might depend on how Konsa and Carlos are after this past week. Carlos is usually paired with Lenglet but he's played 2 massive games for us this week.

He also hasn't played as much up to this week as others have, although he has played the full 90 minutes in the last 4 league games.

We should make a decent amount of changes. We have more than enough as a squad to get a point at the worst team in the group. Give some players a little breather ahead of the Christmas league and cup program.

It’s where we want to be and if we are going to continue to do well then it’s something we are going to have to get used to.  Luckily we have a manager who is very experienced in dealing with that workload and the planning it takes.

Luiz is a shoe in he's got the next game off in the league.  Zaniolo will get a start, this and the Boro game are his last chance saloons.  Bailey rested, Watkins looks, understandablt, a bit tired and we need minutes in Duran if he's to make the step up.  Olsen in goal, Cash, Moreno and Ramsey...

Olsen,
Cash,
Carlos,
Lenglet,
Moreno,
Luiz,
Dendoncker,
McGinn,
Zaniolo,
Duran,
Ramsey.

How do we finish second?

Legia Warsaw have to win and we have to lose.  If that happens then I don't think we will be able to be separated on head-to-head criteria, so it will then go to overall group goal difference.  We are currently 3 goals ahead, so they would need to turn that around to finish above us.  If that finishes level, then it goes to goals scored in the group and we are currently 3 goals ahead of them in that as well.

Almost impossible but the sort of thing Spurs would do.

Them winning 2-0 and us losing 2-0 would do it so it's not completely out of the question but seems unlikely. FWIW, I reckon AZ will beat Legia and overtake them. I hope so anyway.

This goes against everything I've been saying in ECL this season but I think we can get away with resting a few. Famous last words perhaps. I do wonder if our recent exploits will have been noted over in Bosnia and we will now be even more of a feather in their cap. Regardless, I think they will be taking this seriously even though they're out with nothing to play for.

They’re a professional football club. Of course they’ll want to win it. Like when they came to VP their ambition was not to lose the game which showed in their tactics. I hope they go all out to win. We’ll pick them off easily then.

Any news on Tim Iroegbunam? I'd have thought he was exactly the type of player Emery would want to bring through. If he's finally recovered from his pre-season back injury, I'd hope we could give him at least 45 minutes. I know Dougie misses the Brentford game but he's another that would probably appreciate a bit of a rest.

He does Mark but we need to get the job done. He’ll have over a week to do so for the Sheff Utd game which is rest enough. When I say rest I mean massaging his leg muscles on a daily basis, some hydrotherapy and general pampering.

Tielemans will likely be needed to start v Brentford on Sunday, and as he was struggling more than a bit in the Arsenal game, I also think that this Mostar game is one he needs to sit out.

Good shout - I'd like to see Tim given a few chances too (better than Carney whoeverhewas?) But given length of time he's been out, likely have to build up match fitness with a few appearances 15-20 mins or so, not an immediate 45+.

For the B squad, they have to be a certain age and have been in our academy for I think 3 years, otherwise they have to be registered in the A Squad. Neither Kellyman, Wilson, or Tim qualify on the length of time at the academy unfortunately.

Maybe impact selection?
Diaby is only player with 2 bookings and is at risk of suspension for next round if he was booked.
I detailed facts in discipline watch thread but thought important and relevant to share here if that's ok too.

I don't want to overdo it, but after the post on the Disciplinary Thread, I was torn between putting it here or my usual basis of the foucs on player specific thread. Those things are dilemmas for me.

I thought these were the two most appropriate owing to pre-match selection discussion and always having precise information on Conference Card regulations on the Discipline and Suspension monitor thread.
Aside from that, I'm learning not to repeat myself too much across threads and hope I've covered everything for everyone so they know about Diaby.
So will just keep it to these two.

              Martinez

Cash   Carlos   Lenglet   Digne

         Luiz    Dendonker

 Zaniolo                        Ramsay

           Diaby
                       Duran

That really should be good enough now they are all grooming in the SUE way to play. Some important players need to get 90+ mins in. I know Mostar were hard to breakdown at our place but they came to park the bus - surely they will try to attack at home and then we could open them up.

Valuable rest for Kamara (who looked magnificent after missing the Bournemouth game) McGinn, Bailey, Tielemans, Pau, Watkins and Konsa.

Mostar cannot qualify no matter what so I don't see them putting out a full strength team myself. But even if they did "park the bus" again, a 0-0 would do for us anyway.

You did well, there. It's always worth looking at the seat configuration on SeatGuru. Ryanair actually operate circa 6% of the total 737 MAX's in service. They only operate 737's.

As far as I can see Servette and Olympiakos will definitely drop into the Conference, I’ve not looked at who’s playing who in the Europa fixtures but all the other places are still up in the air, although there are a few which will take some large goal swings to alter the goal difference.

Don't we avoid a two legged tie against a team that drops from the Europa League if we finish top of the group?

That's a pretty big reason to want to finish top.

Yes, but it's not the end of the world if we don't. Compared to the last two matches this one feels low stress, and it's nice to have that before starting the Brentford pre-match discussion.

I don't think it would be the end of the world, just that there is something riding on the match, it isn't a dead rubber.

EDIT - if we had to go into the knockout round, those two matches would be played on Feb 15th and 22nd.

That would leave us this run of games:

10 Feb - Man U (h)
15 Feb - Conference League tie 1
17 Feb - Fulham (a)
22 Feb - Conference League tie 2
24 Feb - Forest (h)

5 matches in 14 days rather than 3 (I haven't checked if that Forest match is on the Sunday or not, so might be one more day involved, but even so, I'd much rather play 3 games rather than 5.

Plus there's also the chance of drawing someone decent in the teams that drop from the Europa League.

Finish top of the group and we can totally forget about the distraction of Europe till March 7th.

By the way , anyone dropping out the Europa into the conference at this stage means they are pretty crap or things aren't right at the club. Don't lose any sleep over these teams

If Bailey’s bloody shot had gone in, none of this would matter.

Plus there'll be FA Cup ties to throw in the mix. Those of you out there - I'm looking at you especially Olaftab - need to make sure those of us lazing in the Caribbean don't have to stress tomorrow about having too many games in February.

No worries my friend. We were up and ready at 5.30 this morning so no way our boys are going to make a mess. A decent 2-0 win tonight and off we go to progress in the League and FA cup.
Lsvilla you just grab another rum and stare at those waves and relax. :)

It'll be a tough game again if the first leg is anything to go by but a 1-2 win for us I reckon. Duran, a Luiz penalty and a Bosnian bloke goes home happy after finding a blue parka in a pub.

A Villa fan got beaten up in Split last night by some Hajduk dickheads, who’d got wind of a few Villa in town. They were wandering round looking for lads on their own. He’s in a group of 10 or a dozen, but was on his own walking back to his hotel, when he was attacked by the cowardly bastards. All I know at the moment is” he’s in a bit of a state”, but he’s on the coach to Mostar.

I hope it isn't one of ours (HandV member). And hopefully medically he is ok even if the experience wasn't pleasant.

Panathinaikos, that Belgian team Brighton's owners own, Sparta Prague, AEK Athens and Olympiacos amongst the teams in 3rd in the EL as it stands.  They're far from all shitty sides.

I don't want extra games, all I meant was the build up to this game feels relatively relaxed compared to the nervous anxiety of the last two league games, which felt like hugely important games in terms of shaping our entire season.

Just saw a pic of him on the coach. No visible signs of injury. Just shook up, apparently. Pretty certain he’s not off H & V.

I echo that and also hope he has no problems at the border crossing into Bosnia and back.

Match pack graphic has McGinn, Kamara, Diaby, Lenglet and Moreno on it. Not sure it can be trusted today. I'd expect to see the last 3 starting, not sure about McGinn and Kamara.
