Club have announced a friendly v Villarreal on Thurs 15/12/2022 - 20.00pm ko
Aston Villa will host Villarreal in a friendly match on Thursday, December 15 (ko 8pm).
The match at Villa Park will see Unai Emery welcome his former club to the Midlands as part of the Villa squad's preparations for their return to action after the World Cup.
Tickets for the fixture are on sale online now!
Not all stands at Villa Park will be open for this fixture so, due to anticipated demand, there will be an initial opportunity for season ticket holders to buy tickets along with friends and family before tickets are put on general sale.

Roll up, roll up, come and see Olsen in goal again!

At least there’ll be plenty of goals.
-
Interesting, didn't expect that. At least he seems to have left them with good wishes.
-
Is this (and the Cardiff game) the first mid-season friendly since the Bari one?
-

Ha ha ha, excellent!

And Pau Torres.
-
Once those Villarreal players play at VP , they will be desperate to sign for us .
-
Let's put Sinisalo in goal, please.
-
Theoretically can any of our players out on loan play?
-
Roll up, roll up, come and see Olsen in goal again!
Nah he’ll play in goal himself before he picks him again. Or maybe ask Tyrone to play rush back.
-
I’d play McGinn in goal to see if we can find a position that suits him. Mind you, he wasn’t at all bad against Brighton.

Have also arranged a game against Chelsea in Abu Dhabi on Sunday 11/12/2022 - 2.10pm (GMT) ko.

Ah sound. Is Steve Gough organising a coach?

If he is I hope it goes to Abu Dhabi where the game is, and not Dubai.

Will the winners be crowned the real Villa?

Bit worried for this one, looking at the weather.

Bit worried for this one, looking at the weather.
It's going to be bloody cold. I'd bought tickets but then realised it's our work do that night, kind of glad it is now.

BBC are saying -2 at kick-off.
I can’t remember the year, but I remember Anfield when we were getting hammered and it was -3 and that was evil. I think it was the birth of “let’s pretend we scored a goal”. Could barely feel my feet.
I’m looking forward to the game though and a rare seat in the Trinity. Think the last time I was in that stand was the league cup loss to QPR under O’Neil. Though annoyingly since they’ve opened up the upper Holte and I could have had my own seat. >:(
-
BBC are saying -2 at kick-off.
I appreciate the show of confidence but it's a bit patronising of Unai to give his old team a 2 goal start.
-
I’m unenthusiastic for friendly games in the middle of summer so definitely can’t be bothered to drag myself out in the cold for an evening kick off in December.

I gave up on pre-season games a few years ago, but at least those have the attraction of seeing some new signings in action.

Same. Far too cold and don't fancy driving home at 11pm in the freezing fog either.

Haha! I can imagine doing that and leaving it to Waze. \(°o°)/

BBC now saying it will be -5 at kick-off. ;D I'm taking a blanky.

I live less than 3 miles from Villa Park. There's no way I'm being prized away from the fireside for that.

Lowest VP crowd since Southampton '85/86? Ellis Out!

Yes! Much like the Real Ghostbusters had to steal their name back.
-
I'm looking forward to it.
-
I wonder how many tickets they've sold for this.
Not massively appealing for the reasons mooted above by others.
-
There's a fair few going I think. I can't remember which stands they released but I think the bottom of the Trinity and Holte and the middle Trinity are pretty much sold out. The Upper Holte has about 3k empty seats, but not sure they've released all the blocks. I can't remember if they released any for the Doug and North.
-
Had a look - they opened just the lower holte and lower and middle trinity, which are sold out bar a handful of seats, so looks like they've opened the upper holte which has tons of availability.
-
Can't find anything on the OS but is it on Villa TV?
-
I don't think it is, I couldn't see anything either. Maybe Villareal will be streaming it for their fans?
-
Yeah I just saw, they are, so will turn up somewhere watchable I suspect.
-

A decent IPTV provider is your friend.
-
Anyone know if the Holte Suite is open tonight...don;t want to turn up early to find out its closed in this weather!
-
Can't find anything on the OS but is it on Villa TV?
I bought the tickets a couple of days after they went on sale and when i couldnt get my normal seats i assumed we had sold out the upper holte - been telling everyone we will have a huge crowd ever since....feel a bit silly now. Hope the lower holte is warm, least in the standing days you could all snuggle up...i remember it snowing in the last season of the old holte playing Sheffield Wednesday and it was very cold!

I try to sit next to big lads for the warmth. You don't half notice the difference when people leave their seats at half time.

Like driving to all the way to QPR for instance or pulling our mates car over and legging it along the hard shoulder of the M56 from ours to relay the news that the match at Newton Heath was off.
Dressed as a Nun.
To add insult to injury, over a pint in the Swan on the A4576, we found out that the match had been called off while we were in the fancy dress shop in Hall Green.

Sun was shining in Manchester during the day then it closed in horribly once we got to Bolton. Grim.

The Bolton game was vile, but I think Anfield was colder as it was in the evening. No snow though.

Anfield in winter is always Baltic, I remember being there on a Sunday in the late eighties early nineties. Don’t think I’ve ever been colder!
-
We had a minibus from Bournemouth for the Bolton game. How we got home is still a miracle. Certainly the coldest game I've ever been to.

Strong team for a friendly. Looking forward to seeing what this A. Young fellow is like, apparently he made a bit of an impression during the trip to Dubai.
-
No Sanson anywhere to be seen.
He's not injured, or they'd have just said "he's injured" rather than "not available for selection".
Must have a move lined up for Jan 1st.

Pepe Reina lives!

Thanks TV!
-
Ollie hesitant and ineffective in his first chance sends it tamely wide
-
Nice possession football so far
-
Achachacha achachacha Tyrone Meeeeengs!
-
You can definitely see that we look more comfortable on the ball. Digne has seen the ball a lot
Ooooh chance for our big striker Tyrone Mings
-
Buendia no gloves
-
looks bastard freezing down there; glad I haven't gone :D

Trying to see if Ash is secretly wearing his snood

Mings excellent chance, but wide

Shocker, Watkins offside.
-

No change there, then.
-
Nice finish but offside by Ollie.
-
Watkins needs to sharpen up or he'll be off - he's not shown much this past 12 months
-
Watkins offside after hitting the net
-
Shocker, Watkins offside.
Another lovely opportunity created by Buendia wasted
-
Cornality.
-
Playing some nice stuff.
-
Watkins so brain dead.
-
We look really good, the way we play is totally unrecognisable to the Gerrard era rabble. Already.
-
Buendia no gloves
They make them tough in Argentina.
-
Drinks break on account of the heat.
-
We are just missing some genuine quality. We have players who are clearly better than we have shown collectively. The signs are positive. Add some genuine quality, coupled with the coaching and management will only help the whole club
-
I'm quite enjoying this for a friendly.
-
Is Pepe going to start a sing song of la bamba to keep everyone warm
-
We are markedly more structurally sound and tactically disciplined than under the former clown
-
Ollie with an El Ghazi, straight at the keeper.

Off the bar. Close by Emi

Mcginn bar, rebound barely hit by Ollie... jeez

should have been a penalty.
-
Jesus, that terror pass from Olsen to the defender with men applying pressure
-
Ollie is much more effective as a support forward playing off a main striker. Ings is by far the better option up front with the right supply line

I’d swap him right now for Pepe Reina even if he is 40

Good reaction save by Olsen.

He's a nice lad and works hard, but he's a perfect example of the sort of player we need to improve upon

As our main forward we are guaranteed to never progress. Hard working, honest, all those positive adjectives. But he lacks the required quality to be a top footballer.

We either play to his strengths or don't play him at all.
-

If you don't take your coat off you won't feel the benefit.
-
It's not about his strengths - he's a striker who gets into scoring positions and repeatedly fluffs his lines.
I am not sure how we're meant to play in a way that makes that problem go away. Unless we just don't expect him to score at all, in which case, fine.
-
It's not about his strengths - he's a striker who gets into scoring positions and repeatedly fluffs his lines.
Yup. I see him as one in five striker, he needs 5 attempts a game to score where a quality attacker would bury the lot.

If Watkins is still a starter come 01 Feb, I’ll eat my hat.

I see subs preparing

my lord, get the feck up already. It's a bloody friendly, stop trying to sell the foul you clowns.
-
have they come for a point??
-
all kinds of changes. Ings for Ollie the main one. Good to see Matty and Leo out there
-
C’mon Villa give the fans who are freezing their balls off (even the women) a goal or two to shout about

Good shot Danny. Saved by Pepe

I'd like to know how Watkins is. Must be amazing in training.

I think it’s mainly his energy and work rate. The end product is really lacking

What the fuck was Chambers doing?

Sometimes you've just got to hoof it.

Still plenty of things to work on and Emery will sort it.

Excellent use of Basque, though I think Villareal is in Catalonia!
-
Finished 0-1
We were easily the better team but two concerns.
1. Fucking about at the back too much again. Too often.
2. Don't create enough chances to be able to support such a blunt instrument as Watkins. Blatantly not up to it.
-
Quality striker(s) incoming in January?
-
We have one on the bench that rarely gets an opportunity. Hope he goes out on loan in January.
-
I genuinely have no idea what Villareal were doing for most of the match or expecting to get out of this friendly. They showed nothing.
Nonetheless, we were clearly the better side. Comfortable for most of the match, and I'll credit Buendia for running his boots off today. I don't care who it is or how much it costs, but we need a proper striker. Ollie seems like a great guy but my lord, how many chances can you get at this level? It still stuns me every time I see a ball bounce off his shin or he is standing 1v1 with a defender and manages to lose his dribble, an unforced error. How can you get to the PL?! Even with Diego Carlos on the mend, we could probably use a CB too.
-
A decent back-up GK is a must.
-
To be fair, both Watkins and Ings scored during their last starts in a proper match. As did Archer I imagine (unless I'm wrong and he's started a game since Barrow which I've forgotten).
-
A decent back-up GK is a must.
Absolutely. Defenders need to be confident that they can pass it back to and receive it from a competent goalkeeper. He’s a decent shot stopper but an absolute nightmare positionally and with the ball at his feet.
-
Think we'll class tgatcasxa collective og.
Sometimes you've just got to hoof it.
Excellent use of Basque, though I think Villareal is in Catalonia!
It is in the Valencian community.
-

My mistake.
-
Smash and grab by them. Lesson to be learnt there.
Also, if it wasn’t already obvious enough, Watkins is not good enough for where we want to be.
-
The cold was our 12th man today.
We were the better team, but we just don’t have that clinical finish. I know why managers like Watkins, but the reality is he has had two decent seasons as a striker in his entire career. He’s not a natural or instinctive finisher and all the work rate and pressing in the world isn’t going to change that.
-
Think my core temperature dropped by about 4 degrees last night.
Watkins doesn’t look an instinctive striker. There were moments when we were attacking that he had his back to play looking for a position to move to.
There was a first time cross in the first half by Digne where a proper centre forward gambles and has a simple header.
However, I wonder if he will be moved wider and asked to work the left, his work rate is high. The goal was a comedy of errors and came after our first six subs.
Kayden Young looks a class act - 16, And the opposition put two on him! Also the cameo by Raikhy was decent.
Thought it was a good workout against quality opposition.
Queue for the coffee at half time was around the bar and along in the lower Trinity, so missed the start of the second half.
-
You can see that we're trying to use the ball better, but we really don't have the players for faffing around at the back. And nobody will ever convince me that Watkins is good enough for where we want to be.
-
I was absolutely freezing last night like others have said I'm still thawing out today.
-
Think we'll class tgatcasxa collective og.
Sometimes you've just got to hoof it.

Shit support, my lord.
Including my not-bothering arse, of course.

13,500
All things considered, that was damn good!

Watching the highlights on VillaTV only reinforced the desperate need for a decent striker. Watkins couldn't hit the proverbial cow's arse with a double bass, let alone a banjo.
