Archer not with the squad so maybe still has a slight injury.

Going back to the proven Watkings partnership up top.

Ings and Watkins. Jeepers. It's almost as though he *wants* to get the sack.

Thought: perhaps he does. Massive payout then a lucrative pundit slot for Qatar.

3 up front (watkins and ings wide)

or is it 442?

The front three is an interesting choice. The players at Forest didn’t do enough so I can see why he changed it.

McGinn needs dropping.

It did seem the day to bring Dendonker into the midfield, push Ramsey wide like we did against Man City and bench Buendia and Coutinho. I didn't count on Ings being re-animated instead of the extra body in the middle. He'll live or die on that hill.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Chelsea Match Thread

Does McGinn have to start every game? I know he's captain, but do....

I can't be bothered. Where's the creativity?

Chilwell or Mount to score and do some sort of ridiculous hand gesture type celebration that Grealish will no doubt copy if he scores again before April.

Dont get the line up - which normally translate to us being brilliant so fingers crossed

Didn't Gerrard say in his presser that Archer may have to have an op but it's being put-off/they're unsure when to do it?

Maybe it's been decided to bring it forward or maybe he has genuine discomfort there. He would almost certainly be on the bench if he felt ok to play.

Like Ings and Watkins ever works.

Well if Archer isn’t fit enough then we don’t have any other out-and-out strikers. Coutinho and Buendia are front three forward players though.

I was hoping we'd play a 4-6-0. Today was the day for a double midfield-triplet with Morgan, Marvelous and Dendonx providing more protection.

What I like is that he uses the week to ponder on what has gone wrong previously and needs improving currently and makes adjustments and little tactical decisions that make you realise they are working on different things during the week rather than keeping spewing out the same things bi-weekly. This Ings and Watkins partnership could just work and the McGinn as part of a 3 could be a masterstroke.

I think we'll get something from the game today.

A corner.

I class them as creative midfielders more than attackers. This is why i'd have kept one of Trez or AEG, far from perfect but you at least felt when they came on there was a goal in them.

When will Gerrard learn that with McGinn in midfield we will never improve? This blindness to the weak links in our team are going to keep costing us. This is a free hit for Gerrard and he will waste it. Bottom 3 here we come!

At least I went for it, he will say!  Strange side he's picked.  Lazy Bailey is like playing with one less unless we get the ball to him all the time, can't see that with this midfield either.

He’s going to expect those two full backs to once again provide the creativity. It’s going to be lump down the middle and overlapping full backs who will deliver poor crosses. We have John “stop look up lofty pass” McGinn to send predictable balls to the opponents for 90 minutes. It’s going to be a tough watch.

Leeds-Arse match stopped and players taken off the pitch because VAR connection isn't working. That will be a massive nail in it if the match is fully called off.

Anyone know where the connection box is near Villa Park?

We look like we’ve given up.

I think the effort is there.. three in the midfield with Ollie and Ings in front of them just doesn’t work.

Mings should be clearing that ball all day but the spin on it was gnarly. Hopefully 1 doesn’t turn into 2, then into 3..

Right.  Pretty sure Gerrard isn’t telling him to do that either.

That's really not how it works. When players are constantly turning back and playing it safe there's 2 'normal' causes:

They've bveen given shit for giving the bal laway too often and and playing safe.
They're waiting for movement and, when it doesn't happen, they recycle possession.

I suspect both are true of Bailey right now.

Can't complain with the overall performance as its been much improved. However, could someone let our players know that there isn't any law that says we have to hit every shot straight at the keeper? We are allowed to at least aim for the corners of the goal

He’s not very good. But when combined with having 0 confidence in front of goal at the moment and a keeper that is having a superb game it’s going to look really, really bad whenever he gets chances

Considering that we have spent plenty, and Gerrard vetoed us spending another twenty million on a winger, that seems very much not likely. Gerrard has had two transfer windows and decided not to sign a striker. Because he's an idiot.

That’s a stunning goal

Martinez at fault

He was. Initially it looked a better goal than it was. Emi either didn’t trust the wall which is ultimately his responsibility or he just got the ball flight completely wrong. Two massive errors have cost us this game. And when combined with the number of superb chances we had…well it’s what you have right now. Relegation zone within our grasp

Looked to me like he misjudged the flight of the ball and took a step to the the right, then realised too it was going to his left and he was in no man's land hence the lack of an attempt to save it.

Why the hate for Mount, is it from Southgate constantly picking him over Jack?

He seems a decent young man.

Opposition players don't normally annoy me but he's got the most punchable face in football, no one comes close.

El Haj Duouf?
Got to be Vardy for me.

Why does Gerrard never look at using the 4th or 5th sub? Time and time again he makes 3 changes, 1 player at a time, often with only a few minutes between them.

We sold all our wingers so we can't play a different way. Dendonker keeps it at 0.2

Because he's a twat. Compare the subs Potter made at half time, they've looked much more solid since.

I'm swaying toward your way of thinking, BV.

He's also one of those random/boring hand gesture goal celebration types.

And he is always rubbish for England, but who cares nowadays, England are rubbish enough with or without son of Southgate.

Bring Buendia and Coutinho on has completely killed our forward progress.. hand brakes on and we’ve got South Americans spinning in circles and Ollie giving the ball away.

Nope nor Bamford, not even Savage back in the day. Of the current crop Harry Kane comes second with his long face and dull monotonous voice, and Stephen Kenny in the managerial ranks.

We aren't changing him before the World Cup break unless we get battered. A narrow, battling, defeat with convenient scapegoats is the worst possible result.

Agreed, I thought we needed 4 or 5 points from these 3 games so he needs at least a win and a draw in the next two.

Subs killed us. I wouldn't have taken Bailey off but Buendia coming on and switching to 4312 seems reasonable. After that, it's answers on a postcard as to what Gerrard was trying to do. Taking off McGinn and Ramsey lost us all control in midfield.

The same applied the Man City game. Yes we played well especially in the second half and had chances to win it, but they missed some great chances. On another day that’s a big defeat.

Has the unbeaten run bought him more games? IMO he needed minimum 4pts from Forest, Chelsea and Fulham, so he needs to win against Fulham. He hasn’t earned the Brentford game and this rate we’ll be giving him until the Brighton game to turn things around. We could be cut adrift in the bottom 3 by the World Cup break if we wait to get rid for too much longer.
