Come on Villa, from the off I want to see us right up for this one and looking lively with purpose. I really don't want to see myself on that Gerrard out thread again.

It does look a bit "same old". Hopefully the performance won't be.

Morgan lives! And he's got a million other central midfielders on the bench to compete with. Gerrard...what a wazzock.

I thought Dendoncker might have started. Hopefully Coutinho will repeat his performance against them last season.

Dendoncker starting might have been a bit defensive at home to Soton. Would have liked Luiz in for McGinn or JJ, and interesting to see how Bailey & Watkins get on.

Ralf loves the Villa. Don't many Germans of a certain age...?

Quote
Hasenhuttl also declared himself a fan of Villa's sprawling stadium and admits he enjoys taking his sides there - even after last year's 4-0 thrashing.

"I love this stadium," he said. "It's a beautiful, traditional football ground and that's what you think about when you think English football.

"But we're not going to look at a beautiful ground. We can hopefully show our qualities in a very committed way."

Hopefully McGinn has benefited from the rest because if he doesn’t have a good game there will be some heat on Gerrard.

The Sky show kicks off with some extended waffle about the royal family, zero escaping the enforced misery.

It's a win tonight or you can fuck off Gerrard.  No excuses, Southampton are not a great side and should be coming here to lose.  We have to stop being a benevolent team and start winning our home games like it's an automatic thing.  The team isn't exactly inspiring, so I want to see us pressing all over the pitch and peppering their goal.  Stop talking a great game and deliver one.

Why is McGinn hugging the left touchline when Digne gets the ball, what is he doing out there?

It feels like he's trying to be the all-action captain, popping up everywhere, but he's just constantly out of position.

Probably, keeps trying to play 'killer' passes as well but they end up being 20/80 punts that see us turnover cheap possession.

When we pass the ball, it's to the man or just behind him, expecting the receiver to do the work. We never seem to pass into space so that the man getting the ball can play it first time or do something quickly.

Having said that Buendia tries something creative to be the exception that proves the rule...

Whatever the outcome tonight, for his own sake Gerrard needs to explain his team selection - why no Dougie etc.

And also the logic behind his substitutions - maybe there was something he saw that we've all missed.

We don't want you hear "XYZ trained well", because on the basis of some performances this season what certain players do or don't do at BMH has sod all connection to what they do in the shirt, on the pitch.
