Whilst reading about Kevin Phillips taking over as manager of seventh-tier South Shields...
(see here: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/jan/28/kevin-phillips-south-shields-manager-interview-sunderland (https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/jan/28/kevin-phillips-south-shields-manager-interview-sunderland))
...I was surprised to learn that he took over from Graham Fenton!
This made me wonder which ex-players are currently trying their hand at management..? And are any of them doing well? (Any future Brian Littles out there?)
(And are there any other examples of one ex-Aston Villa player taking over the reigns from another anywhere? I can think of John Gregory replacing Brian Little, who himself replaced Ron Atkinson who was at Villa as a player but never appeared for the first team.)
-
Steve Watson is manager of Chester in National League North.
-
There's that Southgate bloke.
-
Adrian Heath is Head Coach at Minnesota United FC in the MLS
-
To answer your second question, Bruce Rioch took over at Arsenal after George Graham
-
Kent Nielsen Silkeborg in Denmark
-
Luc Nilis Belisia Bilzen in Belgium
-
Savo is a manager, although it looks like he's currently unemployed having left Ljubljana in October.
-
Ronny Johnsen EIK Tonsberg in Norway. That’s me done.
-
One for the road . Mustapha Hadji Morocco albeit Assistant.
-
Can we include Assistant Managers, if so, Jack Grealish. Every time I've seen him this season he's next to Pep.
-
I think Habib Beye is the current manager of Red Star.
French division 3.
-
Nobby Solano, as well as being assistant manager of Peru, is manager of the Peruvian Olympics team (which I think is a fancy way of saying their Under 23s national side).
-
I had completely forgotten about Habib Beye. I even had to google him to remind me when he was with us. What a mad signing that was.
-
Shaun Maloney was recently appointed manager of Hibs.

Was he the shit one or was that Kachloul? I vaguely remember it as being a 'buy one get one free' signing.
-
They both had their moments, Kachloul started off well and petered-out. Hadji had a few nice moments dotted across his time with us but ultimately both were "meh" in the John Gregory finishing 8th years.
-
It felt as if they were both better at Coventry
-

Which wasn't bad going as Kachloul never played for them.
-
Is Simon Grayson still at Fleetwood?

Sacked back end of last year.

Hadji was (the last?) one of our annual tradition of the time, where Coventry would sign a player for 50p and a Peter Beardsley sticker, then sell the same player to us for £5m or so 9 months later.
-
Kachloul was the first in a long tradition of Villa players on £40k-plus per week but spent a whole season never even making a squad appearance... Very much a Gregory signing, then nobody else picked him. Same agents?

Didn't we steal him from under the noses of Ipswich, which is how he ended up on that wage, we gazumped them. We did the same for Fat Ross, Norwich were about to sign him until we came bulldozing in.
'Sakes.

Yes, Youssef Chippo was the other Moroccan with Hadji at Cov.
-
Rob Edwards at Forest Green Rovers.

Wilfred Bouma is with PSV U18s.

Thought he was a weird signing at the time, he was 32/33 years old when he came, so even if he had been a success, he had a very limited shelf life.
MON made some bloody peculiar transfers.

If memory serves we gave him a 4 year contract.

Watford statement on Tom Cleverly:
"Watford FC confirms Tom will be in charge for the match at Coventry City and that the speculation over his position is just that - pure speculation"
