So, as prompted by another thread, I thought I'd start a discussion/vote on which of our crests you like the most. Also, in my view there are elements of some that I'd like to mix with others, such as the Lion Rampant on some is better than others.
Should we revert to the original crest for our 150th anniversary? Or perhaps create a new one?
Anyway, here they all are.
1874-1886
1886-1956
1956-1969
1969-1973
1973-1992
1992-2000
2000-2007
2007-2016
2016-now

The current one is by far the worst, I hate everything about it, including its association with the Lerner era. I can't believe it hasn't be redone to be honest. Of the old ones, the round badge is the best followed by the blue shield with the claret lion. I don't mind the stripey shield with the gold lion, although this is mainly due to associating it with a relatively successful period in our history, rather than any artitisic merit it has.
-
There's no way the second one was our badge 60 odd years, or if would have been on the Trinity Rd stand.
Anyway, it's the round one for me, or the blue with claret one that was on the Trinity.

Agreed.
-
Definitely the round badge with a single star (above, not incorporated) for me.
-
The worst for me is the one from 2000-2007. A nondescript badge for a nondescript era. The round badge is amazing.
-
Aston Villa FC wins hands down.
-

And it is, to be polite, absolutely shite. Looks like something I'd have come up with when I was 7.
-

I agree, but I might replace the lion with today's version (in claret, of course).
-
Round badge ( although Chelski have hijacked that) or the Blue Lion with AV underneath
-

I don't like abbreviations, personally. We have a unique and beautiful name and I like to see it written in full.
-
1956-1969 for me followed by the round one. 56-69 because it represents the beginning of my love affair with the Villa.
The round one because it represents the era where we've played our best football. Both are aesthetically pleasing.
The very first one is quite pleasing.
-
Is there a meaning in heraldry regarding which way the lion is facing? Just wondered why we went from it facing right to facing left.

Socialist Villa :)

The current one is the rehash of the Lerner version, with added claws. That was the really poor one.
I've looked in a few different places and that odd lion-less crest appears to have been live for a while....
-
All the ones since the round one are shite.
The rampant Blue Lion is great.
-
I have a theory that we all have an ingrained emotional attachment to whatever the badge was at the time we first started following the team, especially if you were very young. For me, it's the round one, as that feels the most 'Villa' to me, even though you can see from those images it stands out as the exception in the last 150-odd years.
-
There are two possible answers... the round one and the wrong answer.
Whatever happens can we have "ASTON VILLA" written on the badge, FFS. If we could make the lion look more rampant than chubby, as well, that would be nice.
-
It's a badge for me.
-
Is there a meaning in heraldry regarding which way the lion is facing? Just wondered why we went from it facing right to facing left.
We nicked it off Scotland so it should be facing left.

Who do you think is the proper Dr Who?
-
Hang on, we had the city crest as our badge? Carry the cities name and all that....anyway, the round badge for me followed by the stripes
-
The round one for me as well. I thought it was a shame though when we lost Prepared from the badge.
-

I grew up with the 90s badge, so I do remember it fondly. The round badge is much better, though.
-
Probably because it’s when I started going with my dad, but I think the late 60’s early early 70’s are my favourite two. My very first Villa kit (yellow shirt with blue collar and cuffs) had a blue lion, how I loved that shirt

The Dr Who argument falls down with me because I started watching in the eighties but then I grew up and realised that, obviously, Patrick Troughton is the best, really. I'm fortunate with the badge debate in that I just happened to start watching when we had our best badge.

Obviously Tom Baker

The Chelsea lion looks more like satanic monster. The Villa round badge is a piece of art.

Definitely Tom Baker. I'm sure I read somewhere once he wouldn't even appear with the other Drs at events and conventions. Such was his fan base.
Another vote for the round badge too, absolute classic.
-
I love the round badge, it’s just perfect. I do like the 57’ shield and quite like the claret lion on its own with AV below.
-
Has this topic come up at any recent meeting between club and supporters and if it did what was the response from the club. I appreciate in the grand scheme of things it might not make the top of the list but for some it means a bit more. For me, like others anything that immediately reminds us of the Lerner era needs dismantling. It wasn’t all bad but that crest was a change during his tenure and it would be great to go back to something that provides us fonder memories of the club.
-
The round one. The only one of them that evokes feelings, warmth and memories. A work of art.
-
As I can't find Risso's, this one is my favourite:

I can't remember who came up with it, but my favourite crest is this one

In first place is the round one, in second place is the round one and in third place is probably the round one.

Yes. That one.

My first kit too , my brother bought it for me. I have the Repro of it now which you can't get any more . I've worn it once and it's too sacred to wear again. I wore it in the club before a game and blokes were stopping me and asking me where I got it from.
-
The round badge 110% . If I had to chose a runner up the 3rd image with the Lion Rampant and "Prepared" motto.
-
My first Villa shirt had the 3rd image as the badge (67-ish), my next shirt had the 4th but my favourite is the round badge
-
I've never seen an episode of Dr Who? But it's the round one.
-
As I can't find Risso's, this one is my favourite:

I am deeply honoured. And also amazed that it's still somehow accessible.

That's a genuinely brilliant badge mate.

Spot on

Ha, I'd not seen that before ... it's definitely the best.
There's elements I like about several of them.
The round badge is my favourite, I think. The lion on that is definitely the best lion. The only other contender, for me, is the 50s/60s one from the old Trinity Road stand. I like the claret lion on a blue background from both those badges. I also like the 'Prepared' scroll beneath the Trinity Road badge, and the first post-round-badge shield. I'd be up for the red lion badge on a black kit, it looks brilliant.
The current badge (and Lerner era one) ... I think the shape of the badge is really good, actually. It looks really modern. It all goes down after that, though. From the cuddly fat lion-ish looking animal, use of initials, the yellow lion, the font that looks like some 6 year old has been let loose on it, the idiotic star thing ...
Really not a fan of stars on badges. We're not some kind of jimmy small time club, and should not be celebrating having only one the European Cup once. When we're the most successful English side in Europe, then we point that out on (or rather, above) the badge.
-
I've never seen an episode of Dr Who? But it's the round one.
Colin Baker then
I like to argue with Dr Who? fans that Sylvester McCoy was the best one. They practically froth at the mouth.

With Bonnie Langford being the best assistant?
-
I would comment further but have concerns that it might dent the cool, tough, edgy persona that I have been cultivating since joining this forum.
-
I'd go with the round badge, but swap the "F.C." with "Prepared" and change the lion to the original rampant sinister, but in claret.
-

This one?
Wasn't that your photo on VT for a while? I haven't been on there in years, I only really remember you and Mantis.
-
The lion should be red/claret and facing left as a nod to the Scottish heritage. The shaggy lions in 1 and 4 look fiercer than the modern attempts to make it look fierce. I'm not a fan of having the name of the club or initials - I guess marketing people would say it's necessary but I think we should have an arrogant attitude that says 'if you know, you know and if you don't then wise up'. High-end brands don't shout and we are a classy outfit with an extraordinary heritage.
-
Is there a meaning in heraldry regarding which way the lion is facing? Just wondered why we went from it facing right to facing left.
There is, facing left it’s known as ‘The Lion Rampant’
-
Blue shield with the claret lion for me. No club name with just the word 'Prepared'. Classy and would look great on a claret shirt.
-
I've always thought "Prepared" was a rubbish motto.
-
I've always thought "Prepared" was a rubbish motto.
Tell that to Scouts
-
I've always thought "Prepared" was a rubbish motto.
Particularly as from the mid 20th century we hardly were. Strangely enough, I still think it belongs there.
-
I've always thought "Prepared" was a rubbish motto.
Tell that to Scouts
The fact that we share it with the Scouts is about as comprehensive evidence of its rubbishness as it is possible to provide.
I'd like something classy, preferably in Latin.
"Noses eunt domus".
-
I've always thought "Prepared" was a rubbish motto.
It's a slippery slope that leads to 3 at the back.

…and Yoko Ono was the most important member of The Beatles.
-
The scout one is/was, 'Be prepared".
-
I'll always love the round badge.
However... I like the original lion rampant, that was then repeated in the shirt before the round one.
I'd like that lion, in the shield from 56, with Aston Villa (as in the round badge) underneath rather than prepared.
All in Claret and Blue, perhaps with a touch of gold somewhere. And no fucking star. Not AVFC, no stripes, and no cuddly clawless wimpy lion.
-
Oh, and I like 'Forward' too.
-
"Non sumus leves; non solum non approbamus te"
-
Oh, and I like 'Forward' too.
What about, “Attack! Attack! Attack attack attack!”
-
Oh, and I like 'Forward' too.

'Score more than them!'
'Quite simply the best'

The new badge looks pretty good in the monochromed rubberised (!) versions that have been on the away kits and training gear the last few years. If they did a white or a light blue version on the home shirt, that would do fine. The current design doesn’t work well on a fabric badge and the colours are wrong.
-
Plus. The current badge is mosaiced into the Holte End. Would cost a few quid to update that to a new design. Although I know a pretty good tiler in Bedworth that could probably do the club a good deal, for cash.
-
I love the 56-69 badge but would prefer the lion to look a bit more fierce - as I think it did on some images.
(https://i.ibb.co/kQFm6FG/crest-1956.gif) (https://imgbb.com/)
I'd also love to have the 1878 red lion on black as a one off second kit one season. It would be great if we started to produce more kits with a nod to historic shirts.
-

That looks better on the Holte than it does on a shirt

Strong chance of us having a round badge again because it works much better on social media..
-

Maybe we should have a square one.

Another vote for the round badge & more than happy with 'Prepared' as our motto!
The current badge is without doubt the worst ever!

Surely the current (slightly revised) one is better than the (almost identical but for claws) last one?

Under previous regimes we would have tried to put it in a ŕound frame though.

The current one is awful in every way.

"Non sumus leves; non solum non approbamus te"
Very good!!
-

I don't like the current incarnation I find it boring and bland. I'd love to see a bit more claret with the blue and some white in there that's been part of the home kit for decades. We have a beautifully symmetrical name which should be included in it's entirety. Over to you kids. And don't forget the gold star somewhere.
-
The round one is a masterpiece, probably my favourite. But I wouldn't go back.It becomes some kind of ersatz retro . I don't like Man City's incarnation for instance.
Time for a new one.Maybe a Clarrie Blue inspired one.
-
The current fashion is to strip logos back, (spurs, bin dippers) so we’ll probably just have a gold lion on the next home shirt.
-
The current fashion sounds shite.
-
This might be up there with admitting to owning a caravan, but I really like what they did with the Spurs badge.
-
My first Villa shirt had the 1969-1973 blue lion atop the AV. I vaguely remember that the seven year-old me felt disappointed that it wasn't the same crest that adorned the Trinity Road stand. Now I really like its pared down simplicity. Whether it works in the twenty-first century world of merchandise and corporate branding is another matter - although as others have said, Spurs and Liverpool have moved away from crests that looked like every heraldic symbol possible had to be included to a simple cockerel and liver bird.
-

Round badge….Tom Baker.
The round badge invoke memories of childhood when i first fell in love with Villa….,and then was Tom Bakers scarves

Thirded.
("We're not fickle, we just don't like you" for anyone who can't be bothered with Google translate)

Not as good but there's also 'vis sponsione contra nos?'
Round badge. Tom Baker.
-
Not as good but there's also 'vis sponsione contra nos?'
Better. That should be on everything from scarves to players' contracts.
-
This might be up there with admitting to owning a caravan, but I really like what they did with the Spurs badge.
I agree, but we have a lion, which is fairly commonplace, so I'm not sure it would work for us.
Whereas Tottenham had an advantage because a cock and singular ball hasn't been seen in European popular culture since 1945.
-

Me too. Think it'd look really good, and we could quite reasonably have a black away kit with a red lion for the 150th anniversary.

The lion badge with 'AV' underneath on the 1971 League Cup Final shirt is very smart.

A modern twist on the round badge we grew up with: round badge, claret lion on blue background, spell out Aston Villa FC and incorporate the word 'Prepared'.

I always hated that badge, but probably more because I'd got one of those Villa badge sovereign rings the previous Christmas (I was 14 before you all start), which I thought was ace, but was suddenly rendered obsolete as a result.

My brother got a silver one of those as a Christmas present from a grandparent. It tarnished to the point of being completely black before the end of the season.

Spanish gold!
Mine was actually the full colour round badge set into the ring, an Elizabeth Duke special if I remember correctly. I broke it taking the best catch I'd ever taken, one handed above my head at square leg.

Oh wearing jewellery on the cricket pitch is madness. I took a massive chip out of one of my front teeth when a pendant I was wearing cracked me in the mouth while attempting to bowl a bouncer.
I'm amazed Chris Jordan and Jofra Archer have any teeth left what with their Mr T chains.

I have abit of a soft spot for this one as its the one when i was supporting villa
I agree with risso that this current ones awful
Maybe that's why Mr T was always telling kids to drink milk, knowing the increased calcium intake would protect against future fast bowling risks.

I like that theory. Anyway, I suspect we're slightly off topic...

This adorned the wall in my parents house. Not sure if it was official, but never seen this version anywhere else.

The current crest is just poor graphic design. A yellow lion on a light blue background is incredibly insipid. It was improved when the claws were added to the lion, but the fundamental arrangement doesn’t work. The lion artwork now is something that could be reused in another arrangement. I can’t help thinking that the crest redesign was a personal project for Randy. It is just plain amateurish.

The two different typefaces look wrong as well.

I would love either the number 3 with a claret version of number 4 lion, or just the number 4 lion

Not just the difference, but Randy’s choice from MS Word (exploding head emoji).
I mean I used it on a volume of patients poetry in the late ‘90s which hasn’t dated quite as badly, but I mean I genuinely only had Word and a photocopier. Crimes against fonts #1874.

Ha a i understandable reason. I become a villain in the premier league the season we came 2nd to united. Saw us win the coca cola cup with this badge thats why i have a soft spot for it.
Ive disliked the ones after this more.
I liked the round one but i think the lion stays gold now fof me instead of claret.
-
Technically the lion should be gold, but in a digital world that doesn’t work.

For me it has to stay gold. I wouldnt want the lion going back claret. Its been gold throughout our premier league era and thats how it should stay

But it looks yellow on screens.

Obsessing over "the Premier League era" is about as plastic as it gets. The best badge is the round one. The lion on the round one is claret. Ergo, the lion should be claret. Yellow is a rubbish colour.

I never saw Dennis Mortimer play but I still prefer him to Mark Kinsella.

Well obviously we'd have to conduct a poll to get to the bottom of that but indeed. The round badge is a thing of beauty but at my age I would say that. I also want Umbro diamonds running down the arms of our sleeves.

Could we have a claret and blue African Car Reverser with the motto ' Unprepared ' underneath?

That's worthy of its own thread, anyway: Billy Walker.

Bruce Rioch. First Villa player I knew by name.

Couldn't get a visa Riss! It stems from the brainwashing I got from my old man, he loved Billy Walker and to hear, not only him but his mates and my uncles , talk about him, he must have been some player. It's been with me all my Villa life.

Who's your favourite player that you've never seen play?
Archie Hunter. Arguably our most important ever player. At the risk of setting this thread off on a tangent from a tangent.

What colour Umbro diamond would you choose for the chest? I always preferred the yellow one to the white one.

He was my nan's favourite player too, would guess she'd have been the same sort of age as your dad etc.

I loved the white away strip with the powder blue shorts and stockings. Just beautiful. Wasn't that then claret diamonds?

That white away kit had 3 different coloured diamonds I seem to remember - blue, yellow and claret.

Depends on quite how you define 'never seen play'. I loved Gary Shaw as a kid. Would've seen him play on the telly a handful of times, though I don't remember any. My first game was just after my 6th birthday -- Swindon Town away on 7th May 1988 - he didn't play, and left the club that summer.
If it's players I've genuinely never seen play - probably Johnny Dixon.

Me too - my dad turned down tickets for the European Cup final because I was due to be born the same day. Forever had an element of guilt because I was born a few weeks premature so he could've gone! Though it worked out well, because he propped me up in front of the telly and made sure that I was awake for the important bits!

Wow, that's some first game! Was my first away game.
I did see Gary play all too briefly, a couple of attempted comebacks and a pre-season friendly. I recall him hitting the bar with a sensational overhead kick though that might be my mind playing tricks on me.
I saw Withe and Mortimer in the play in the flesh, and Andy Gray in his second spell, so my Brian Little is clear in front for my choice, if the criteria is seeming them play live.
-
Little, Gray and Sid all scored on my first Villa game.
-
Deehan, Gregory (2) & Mortimer scored in my first game.
-
Er, I'll raise you Charlton Athletic, November 1959: Hitchens (5), Thomson (2), McParland (2), Wylie and McEwan. Being only 5 years old and having been passed down to the front to stand behind the railings in Witton Lane, all I remember - much to my shame/regret - is a lot of rushing about, feeling cold and the smell of dubbin and embrocation from the players' boots and legs. Oh, and anxiety that I'd never be re-united with my dad again at the back of the stand.
-
This is interesting about our branding. (https://someoneinlondon.com/projects/the-claws-are-out#6)

My old lad was born in 1919 just as Billy Walker made his first team debut so he watched Billy as a schoolboy and teenager. He never stopped telling me about him. Billy Walker died on my birthday 1964.

didnt they also sport black diamonds at one point. Sure I’ve seen a Villa shirt with black Umbro diamonds on the front of the home shirt

I would just want the words Aston Villa on it
It’s the greatest name in football and shouldn’t be hidden behind AVFC

I have to admit that I wouldn’t mind just a lion without letters or words (70’s style) it would have to be a proper, rampant, lion.
We know who we are, we know we’re the greatest team the world.
Saying that, I would really like our 50’s type
-
I want the words back, too. Our name is beautiful.
-
Do we know if there is any intention of changing?
-
A slight diversion - does anyone still have the image from the flag suggestions of a very relaxed looking lion that led to some of the most hysterical (as in funny, rather than mad) comments I think I've ever read ? If memory serves I think it was damon green who created it ?
