Really interested to see how we line up when attacking and of course (and maybe more relevant today) when defending.

I’m trying to work out where the creativity is coming from…

There is a lot of creativity on the bench though. Disappointed Bailey isn’t starting, but hopefully will be on around 50-60 mins.

I'm going to hyperbolise in the hope of looking like a twat after we win. Playing with five at the back when you have two of the best strikers in the league on the pitch, and leaving your two most creative players on the bench is gutless and invites a hammering. As somebody else said on the pre-match thread, Bruce out!

Either that or Tuanzebe next to Luiz in a 4-2-3-1. Either way, urgh.

Sanson and Bailey on bench. Archer too. They'll shit up Chelsea on 65 minutes.

So negative. Thought them days of not trying to lose by too many had gone.

Don't see the issue, a few teams have switched to 5-3-2 v Chelsea since Tuchel came in and indeed Lampard played it a bit aswell.

Now question is how well we look trained in it given we haven't had all the players in during the week so that could be issue but this is simply one of the toughest games we'll play all season regardless of formation.

Man, loving the positive vibes on here today!! It's one of the things that gives me the biggest rush on match day, you know, popping on here and seeing all the excitemant and anticipation from you guys!!  Remember what it was like 5 years ago when we were struggling to score in The Championship??  EEEKKKK!  Thank goodness those days are long gone and we can all enjoy match day now, huh??

Good luck, boys!  Everyone on H+V appears to have faith in you!!!

It isn't in any way three at the back. We have five defenders on the pitch, like when we lost eight-nil. Fucking garbage.

If McLeish did this he'd be getting torrents of abuse and quite rightly.

Bailey not starting is due to fitness, will almost certainly get some game time, including today 4 out of next 5 games are away, trying to be optimistic, can only see 2 wins maximum.

The Doors were very successful without a real bass player, maybe Dean thinks we can be successful without a real midfield.

Will be tough. Alonso bombs on down their left like no tomorrow so can see Cash being pinged back so hopefully Axel can help him out.

Interesting who Chelsea play on the other side, assumed Hudson Odoi but think Calobah played right back for them in first game so we'll see.

Certainly far from the strongest 11 Chelsea could put out. Just seen Barkley on their bench, thought he'd been cut from their squad.

Not happy with that team selection. Hoping Smith proves me wrong though.

Positives are seeing Watkins and Ings together, and assume McGinn and Ramsey will play further forwards which will suit them.

Bailey and Traore on the bench could be a strong pair to brong on second half.

Those blaming the system...you know we're playing against a 3 centrebacks formation, right? Like, you can count and stuff?

Yes, same as they played at Villa Park when we beat them, with a proper formation.

If you’re going to completely fuck about with your formation, you don’t want to be doing it at fucking Chelsea, and you want someone slightly better acquainted with tactics than Dean fucking Smith.

Where the fuck was the midfield and why was the defence all over the shop?! Their player literally had the whole of the middle of the pitch to run in to with no Villa players anywhere near him.

Tuanzebe was an odd signing anyway. For the loan fee we paid we could've bought and burtured one of our own. Acquired by the strength of his championship season and looking every inch a championship player.

When you have world class players in every position and a world class manager, formations are less important.

Before they went off to win the Champions League. With a non-proper formation.

I mean as a gag it's got stale, but are we seriously pretending that this is our biggest problem today? We irrationally hate this formation and that's that?

It's true. I've heard people defending five at the back before on the basis that Guardiola sometimes plays it. Because obviously the formation is the secret of their success, not the fact that every player in the squad cost a trillion quid.

We're playing some good football, I'm pretty happy with what I've seen tbh.

Ultimately no matter what we've spent they've just dropped nearly 100m on one of the best forwards around in world football so that's the difference I'm afraid.

Mings booked, great. This ref is going to send one of ours off isn't he before too long.

They're not, they're playing 5-4-1 (or 3-6-1 if you prefer). We are doing okay apart from the goal, but "apart from the goal" is a fairly massive caveat. If having three centre-halves isn't enough to stop Lukaku scoring that, what's the point in wasting a place on a centre-half that could be used on a player who might help us get a goal?

Better team for me so far, love the tenacity of the midfielders, particularly McGinn.
Undone by world class midfielder playing it through and class finish.
No disrespect to Watkins who is causing them problems but if Lukaku has his two chances he’d put them away, that’s what £90 odd millions gets you.

Been the better side easily.  Axel's pub team defending cost us big time. I'd expect Tuchel to change things at HT unfortunately because they're struggling. Probably too many changes.

Yeah can see them bringing Werner on perhaps and dropping Havertz back into midfield. Saul Niguez had an awful debut for them.

Playing wider shows what a good technical player Ollie is sometimes, ball glued to his foot at times this half and unlucky not to score.

Not  at all shabby.  No long ball pinging in evidence.  drive and enterprise from the midfield.  With a few more minutes in Olly's legs we'd be level or better.  Come on boys.

Thought we looked really good, unfortunate to be behind really. Formation is allowing us to control the territory, felt like we spent most of the half in the final third, was a bit surprised by the possession stats. Ref has been inconsistent, glad to see Mings and others pointing this out. Ramsey having a very good game, he's a proper player. Keep it up Villa, then punish them with our attacking subs.

Genuinely the better side, Ramsey making Saul look like a little noob in midfield, Watkins a menace (though Ings is a bit absent), and the system matchup favours us, we're crowding them out in midfield and looking dangerous. Only problem is the fecking score.

Agree Ings is limited in this formation. He can press o.k but it is a bit Bent ish in that he's not the type of striker who'll always be in the game if crosses aren't coming in. Ollie is so that's the difference.

Well we had a back 4 at Watford and of course were 3-0 down by the hour with some comedy defending.

With what our squad is looking like now I honestly think based on this 45 minutes it's going to suit this squad more than others although DS can obviously tweak and play 4-3-3 in other games but I like it v the top 6 otherwise we get too exposed in central midfield.

For 43 1/2 minutes we created more chances and controlled their midfield.  A 4-3-3 will just allow Havertz and Ziyech more freedom to drop into the spaces between Luiz/Cash and Ramsey/Targett and invite more pressure on to the two centre backs.  The defending for the goal was poor all around, Konsa should have been in position, Axel should have stayed on his feet and Steer should have put pressure on the ball.  3 individual errors that had nothing to do with the shape.

Some of the comments on here are just plain daft now. We're playing the champions league winners and many pundits tip for the title. And we've looked fucking good. More than a match for them. We will go on to have a very good season.

Chelsea haven't got out of second gear.  Trouble is they haven't needed to.  We've just surrendered
You on the wind-up?

We've given them two goals I'm afraid.  Hardly had to work for them have they?

Ah crap it. I did not expect us to win today, but this feels as though we’ve had a few steps back from where we were last season.

Many stronger teams will come to Stamford Bridge and lose 2-0. It’s just the fact that we gifted it to them.

I’m confused, how is that a step back?

Honestly think we played better today than the 1-1 last season when from memory we really rode our luck with some of the chances they missed.

And they were also still managed by Lampard then so all round more balanced and cohesive team now.

Bit beyond me how people can watch this and not see there is hope for the season even if it will takes us 2-3 months to properly click.

What pisses me off where was that first half performance against Brentford? We would have blown them apart.

We always raise our game against the top teams and struggle with the lesser teams, Newcastle apart.

I’m just thinking in terms of what we were doing last season, and results. We drew this fixture last year, although we created less and had less on target shots. I also think our defence has taken a step back somehow, gifting the 2nd goal being a prime example.

I do feel that when this gels, we’re going to genuinely exciting. But we’re not quite there yet.

Mings has probably made more mistakes leading directly to goals since we've been back in the Premier League than any other player. He's always, always got a match-changing fuck up in him.
...and that's precisely the reason why he shouldn't even be in our team, never mind the captain.

Let's face it, he only got the captaincy because he's a virtue signalling snowflake, much in the mould of Gareth Southgate.

That's a really poor comment. I'll put it down to the emotions of watching a game in which we've played pretty well. It's out of order though. One howler aside, Mings has played well.

It reminds me a bit of West Ham away last season. Played brilliantly and got robbed in the end but we then went on a very good run for next 6 weeks.

Tricky to see that happening with next few fixtures but think we'll start blowing away some mid table teams whenever we play them if we keep everyone fit.

I think Benitez will be watching this and be pretty impressed so interesting how Everton line up next weekend.

Yup ifs and buts indeed.  The captain of the club we support will put his hand up to a bad error and knuckle down to improve in the week.

At least one poster in this thread might want to think about what their improvement plan is, after the disgusting comments about our skipper.  A long hard look in a mirror would be a good start point !

They didn't, which is why we lost.
