Let's get a win boys in front of a packed Villa Park. Today's line up. Some surprises and disappointments like no Bailey. Won't be easy at all but we can do this.

Let's hope the first 11 can gel quickly as there is hardly anything on the bench to change things bar throwing on the two kids and hoping they can be surprise packages.

What happened to Traore, played last week and not involved today like Bailey?

No Bailey at all. We are absolutely cursed.

Ah well, given the options available that's the team I'd have chosen. Still a long way from full strength though.

Why the hell we playing a practice match 24 hours after high intensity premier league match?! I know Traore only came on as a sub but still, need recovery time and we could've done with him starting today.

Surely a practice match on Tuesday or Wednesday would be more logical.

Our pre season has been very very odd when you look at it from a few different angles.

I gather it was players who need game time, not so much the starting eleven from Saturday. Traore had an op in the summer and he was included I guess to help with his fitness. Quite a few teams were involved in these types of games on Sunday apparently. This summers pre-season has been messed about by Covid.

Buendia right, AEZ left, and Ramsey as the 10?

McGinn surely as number 10. Ramsey and Luiz as continuity midfielders to get the play moving. Ramsey looked good in his cameo sub roles over last 12 months, less so when he actually starts a match so big test for him today.

Need far more from Buendia today as looking at that he should be drifting in from the right like he was at Norwich.

The line up could work today as it's more balanced than last week. We really need the first goal though, don't fancy us at all if we go 1 down especially with lack of options on the bench which is really frustrating with the injuries.

This will be an interesting watch.

I don't think anything we've seen from Smith's selections indicates he'll put Ramsey deep with Luiz and McGinn further forward. Every piece of evidence suggests the opposite. The only question is whether Ramsey is wide and Buendìa central or vice-versa.

I think our lineup is much better balanced. 433 with I hope AEG on the left. McGinn given a bit more freedom to push forward with Luiz and Ramsey sitting in more. Sanson still MIA

Looks like a very attacking Newcastle lineup too with Willock in for Shelvey. Seems like they will be play with effectively a front four of some description. Hopefully we can get joy against them in midfield.

Maybe I've missed something, but when has Ramsey ever played as a 6? He came on as an 8/10 last week and good thing too, as he's way too lightweight to hold down the midfield in a two. He's played at 8, he's played at 10, and even wide on occasion, but as a holder?

I'd hope Luiz is sitting and McGinn and Ramsey both have licence to get forward rather than 1 of them being told to stay deep, we know what McGinn can do when he gets forward and Ramsey was at his best in the U23s when he was breaking into the box from deep.

Luiz as 6 surely, Ramsey slightly ahead of him.

McGinn surely must play as most advanced of three given how well he took his goal last week. Feels like Ramsey would just take too many chances getting in the box and just make wrong decisions whereas McGinn will get shots away.

It would make more sense to have McGinn and Ramsey in there as they could cover the other on breaks forward while keeping the centre a bit stronger. Neither of them is suited to being partner in a deep two. 4-3-3 surely.

I'd hope it's a 4141 with the 4 in midfield all given the chance to get close to Ings. I'd hope we put pressure on a weak defence and rookie keeper though. If we get too deep we play into their hands because every decent player Newcastle have today is attacking.

The criticism levelled at Dean Smith is so justified for his games without Jack. He’s proving it again as he has proven it over time, and showing himself to be so one dimensional. I know key players are missing but we punch so very below our weight. Tactically so poor. Newcastle are below average and we are allowing them to play as they want.

One of the worst refs I've seen in years, this guy ever reffed before in the prem as looks completely overawed by atmosphere.

Just checked him on Wiki. Not good.

'In February 2020, Coote was the video assistant referee for the match between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. During the game, Giovani Lo Celso committed a serious foul when he stamped on Chelsea's Cesar Azpilicueta. On reviewing the incident, Coote deemed the foul not worthy of a red card and Lo Celso escaped a sending off. Coote would later admit to having erred and stated he should have recommended a red card for Lo Celso.[4]

In October of the same year, Coote was again the VAR referee for a derby game. This time between Everton and Liverpool in the Merseyside derby. During the game, Jordan Pickford made a dangerous tackle on Virgil van Dijk in the penalty area, rupturing the latter's cruciate ligament. Coote correctly refused to give a penalty kick due to an offside in the build up. However, due to the offside, he controversially refused to give a red card to Pickford in spite of the challenge clearly endangering the opposition player.[5] The on-field referee, Michael Oliver, later admitted that he should have sent Pickford off.[6] In the same game Coote ruled out what would have been a winning goal for Liverpool when he ruled out Jordan Henderson's 92nd minute goal when Sadio Mané was adjudged to have been marginally offside in the build up to the goal'

No it isn’t. This is as bad as last season and whichever season grealish wasn’t played. It’s not a recent thing and needs addressing. Fed up of rebuilding/consolidation for poor performances. Either Dean sorts it and gets a tune or gets the tic tac.

It should have been about pushing onwards but a pedestrian Newcastle under Bruce are holding us.

Pretty clever way to run down the clock now we're winning.

Agree with that. Young much better as an LB nowadays. Ramsey been bright on the ball.

It hasn't been great (we're pretty much the definition of a side that's had a disrupted pre season) but will take 1-0 no danger from this. After dodgy opening 20 minutes kept their attacking players pretty quiet.

Honestly we have been poor, we try to pass out of defence but look like we've never been coached in the right movements to do so, and we're going to need more than long-throws, flick-ons and finishes out of soccer comics to get up the league this season.

But also, fuck me, that was just utterly maniacal by Ings. 2 in 2 now! Fair to say he's doing what he was signed for.

I thought Cash was taking so long he'd run the clock out. Anyway, it worked. Newcastle can't defend them it seems.
What a cracking finish.

If I was being particularly impatient and pessimistic, I'd say Beundia worries me a tad. I'll give him the benefit of not being 100%, playing in shite conditions, but furthermore, this position on the right doesn't suit him. I would imagine before we see the best from him, Smith will need to figure out who plays where to get the best out of them. Beundia needs to be more central. He does seem to have a good eye for a pass, but when he's fitter I think he'll be sharper off the first few yards.

Minus Bailey and Watkins, we do lack a bit of pace up top. But...the fact we've still got those options to come in is something to look forward to.

Early season can be all about grinding results sometimes, whilst getting up to speed. Stay tight, keep probing for another and don't try to sit on the lead. I'd be tempted to bring on Hourihane to perhaps give us a bit more from set pieces, because Newcastle don't look great defending them, but our delivery hasn't been great.

Alot  etter than last week but still some issues we need to work on. Set pieces barring the goal have been poor. Creating chances has been limited too.

I think ramsey and mcginn have been really good. Mings ahs been abit clumsy at points. Needs to wake up abit. I fear luiz might get another booking. Might need to bring him off early 2nd half.

Would like to see JPB come on for AEG at some pojnt second half too

Ramsey doing okay, perhaps needs to open both his mouth and ears a bit more. McGinn super as per, Buendia doing what I thought he would, and once the pair of them develop a real understanding I think they'll terrorise teams. Big fan, but El Ghazi looks a bit lost out there.

And I've got signal!

Superb goal but fuck me other than that we’ve been crap.

I seriously worry about the passing out of defence. Our five central players in defence and midfield were all here last season, yet every time the centre-backs or Doug gets hold of the ball it seems like the instructions to the 8s are 'sprint at the goal like Forrest Gump'. Movement here is teamwork, it's something you coach and you need it to play this style at this level. Yet again we haven't seen it.

and Trez. That's a lot of attacking options to come back over the next few weeks/months. On top of that they're playing with a back 5 and a DM so us struggling to find space is literally their game plan.

We are looking for someone to carry the ball for us. Apparently some bloke we sold is the best in the business at that. It’s glaring how we are struggling to change our approach creating a lack of ideas in that middle to final third

I honestly don’t know why. It’s more a Mings play than anyone else but you’d think Dean Smith given his reputation pre Villa would want to play it on the deck the vast majority of the time

We send it long far far too easily.

Well we are used to having the hardest working forward in the league to chase it down. Aside from that I think we're mixing it up pretty well today, as I said earlier they're playing with what is effectively a back 6, if we try to pass through we're struggling for space so threatening them with balls in behind at least pushes them back slightly. I just wish we had someone with a bit more pace to really 'sell' it, that's why I'd bring JPB on.

Emi didn't have to make a save today. We look a bit disjointed in the final third, and our chemistry just isn't there yet.
