Just like that the new season is upon us. What a summer it’s already been, and more ins and outs to come I imagine before the window closes. We enter the post Jack Grealish era a little worried and a little excited given the players who are now with us and will be soon. It’s hard to know yet if we are better and stronger as a complete unit or less so now that our best player has deserted us. Still we have to push on and I can only look at this new chapter with optimism. So many excellent young players adding to a squad that overall in my opinion will be better, deeper and more ready for what is ahead in our third season back up.
Watford won’t be easy. It never is at a promoted club. But we are strong at the back, and will be a massive threat going forward. With the ball and on the break. So I’ll go for a solid 2-0 win. Goals from Ollie and Buendia.
-
Please have some players fit and please win, Villa. No idea what the formation/lineup will be.
Obviously Deeney will score so we need at least two. COYVB.
-
Ings hat-trick. Each ball being burst with each goal due to the power of the twatting they've just received.
-
1-1 draw for me. Promoted teams early enthusiasm blunted by experience, not sure we’ll have the fluency to win it.
-
I would also go for a 1-1 draw - it will be a tough game for us especially with the way that Watford play, our centre halves will be in for a tough 90 minutes
-
0-2 Ings & Mings
-
Virtually impossible to call given what's happened this summer. No idea who will play, what the formation will be. I'd settle for a draw.
-
The first day always throws up a few odd results. Despite our recruitment I'm not sure we're ready, pre-season has been a bit messy, injury doubts abound and I feel that the press will be waiting to jump on a poor result given the absence of their new darling.
2-0.
-
With our blighted preseason and lots of players potentially unfit or injured, plus them being a newly promoted side, I think they'll win.
-
We will be missing at least three key players...
Buendia
Bailey
Luiz
-
8-1 us, Ings, Mings, Watkings and Buendings with two each.
-
1-1
-
Are we sure Buendia is out?
-
I think we are a little undercooked and our pre season has been disrupted somewhat.
Expect a High Tempo performance from Watford.
Do well to get a draw.
-
On paper whatever XL we put out should be better than Watford man for man. Having said that it's never easy going to newly promoted side on the first day of the season and I think Watford might be the best equipt of the three sides to stay up. I wouldn't grumble at a point.
-
2-1 Villa win.
-
In Aus a Villa win is $2.25, Watford win and the draw $3.25. Fairly comfortable Villa win I think.
-

I would. Every game is difficult in the PL (Albion aside) so no excuses, start the season as we plan to go on. 3 points please, Bob.

I expect us to beat these with only eleven players. Forty seems unnecessarily excessive.
-
Hope we're not ragged as fuck....we've had such a disruptive pre-season.
Don't have a clue about Watford, do they know their arse from their elbow? Can't believe Deeney is still there. You can just see an 88th minute shithouse winner from him in front of the Vicarage's first crowded house since we funeral'd them.

I'm not sure it will be 40 per side
Edit- Lastfootstamper got there first!

This. I’m thinking we’ve had a pretty disrupted pre season and it may take another week or so to hit the ground running. I’ve no idea what Watford’s pre season has been like though of course.
I’d take a point and then a humiliation of the barcodes.

Agreed. With no disrespect to Watford, they are after all sort of stepbrothers via SGT, but if we're not looking at these games as the sort we should be winning then forget challenging the top 6/7.

I don’t think the owners and Purslow will be too impressed if we lose on Saturday
Dean needs a good start to the season otherwise he may be looking for a new job by November

The opening game of the season being a must win game is a first for me.

Gets earlier every season. Will be pre season friendlies soon.
-
By 5.00 on Saturday we will know whether we are going to win the League with a record number of points or finish miles adrift in bottom place.
-
There are times though when a poor first performance means you question what the fuckers have been up to in the summer. Was it under MON where a home defeat by Wigan was swiftly followed up by being unceremoniously dumped out of the Europa League by Rapid Vienna and a serious amount of meltdown occurred. Admittedly that was followed up by a quite stupendous 3-1 win at Anfield so all part of the rough and tumble.
-

Buendia
Bailey
Luiz
And how fit are the likes of Sanson or Traore? Hardly fit enough to start surely....might be the day to give three at the back a go as options out wide and in midfield seem very light. Always have the option of bringing in likes of AEG and Traore off the bench.
------------------Martinez
-------Konsa, Tuanzebe, Mings
Cash, Ramsey, Nakamba, Targett
-----------------McGinn---------
------------Ings, Watkins
Subs from Steer, Hause, Young, Traore, AEG, Wes, Sanson, Hourihane, Chucky, JPB, Guilbert
-
God Allah Buddha please don't let that be the lineup. Five defenders against Watford?
-
By 5.00 on Saturday we will know whether we are going to win the League with a record number of points or finish miles adrift in bottom place.
Indeed - there are only 2 outcomes.
-
I don't know what to think as I don't have a Scooby what the line up will be. I think Young might start too.
-
I don't know what to think as I don't have a Scooby what the line up will be. I think Young might start too.
yep, I think so as well
-
I'm expecting Smith to stick to his usual 433 formation but with Ollie moving out wide...
Martinez
Cash, Konsa, Mings, Targett
Nakamba, McGinn
Ramsey
Traore, Ings, Watkins
-
That looks like the team I’d pick
Obvs Buendia for Ramsey if fit
-
Well Watford fans are not very confident, allegedly their two best strikers will probably be injured and a lot no longer fancy Deeney at this level.
On the flip side Mike Dean is the twat in the middle!
-
I'd rather their best strikers were fit it's Deeney I'm worried about!
-
I hope Mike Dean doesn’t get to hear that we were singing about Kevin Friend being a shit version of him!
-
Martinez
Cash Konsa Mings Targett
McGinn Nakamba
Traore Ings Watkins Buendia
4-2-4 go for it and smash 'em to bits.
-
I would take no chances on the selection, stick with tried and trusted for a game we should be winning.
A safe 0-1 will do for me.
-

Yeah I just heard who the ref is, wouldn't he just love to give a red card, to start the season!
-

Cash Konsa Mings Targett

Traore Ings Watkins Buendia

Like it. Party like it's Sensible Soccer in 1992!
-
Are bert and beundia going to be fit?
-
Bugger. For some reason I thought Deeney had retired after they went down. Can't believe he's still hanging around and will be playing Premier League football again. He'll have his best games of the season against us as per normal. Shit house.
We'll still win mind you.
-
Are bert and beundia going to be fit?
Knowing our luck.. Dean will be cagey and say "maybe" and then we will not see them or Baily until Christmas :(
-
I think this is potentially tricky. Through no real fault of our own we look a bit undercooked.
-
I think if we win it would be a great reault as we have a load of missing players.
-
2-0.
-
Not sure I buy undercooked. We've had plenty of friendlies, we only missed out on the Forest one.
Some of the football for the Young goal the other day was excellent for example.
Martinez
Targett
Mings
Konsa
Cash
Nkamba
McGinn
Buendia
Watkins
Ings
El Ghazi
That's a good side and one more than capable of bearing Watford.
-
I'd start Young wide left instead of El Ghazi. He's looked sharp as fuck.
-
Also benefits from the "bound to score against former team" rule.
-
Martinez
Cash Konsa Mings Targett
SJM Nakamba
Buendia Ings Young
Watkins
-
Really hope Buendia plays. Very excited to see the new Messi in action.
-
According to the Watford forum, Buendia got his only Premier League goal against Watford.
-
I wonder if Young could play DM? Old and wise, should be able to read the game better than anyone. I'm spitballing. Not sure if he'd have the legs though.
-
1-2 win.
No idea on the team really, get the feeling it might be one of those WTF selections at 2pm.
Would be o.k with a draw if we win the two home games but 7 points from first 3 got to be the aim even if all the new signings aren't ready to play.
With the backline we have we should be capable of grinding out some clean sheets v two newly promoted teams and Newcastle.
-
According to the Watford forum, Buendia got his only Premier League goal against Watford.
I remember watching that on Pick. Think Watford won that and went 6 points clear of us with just 4 games left of season so proper great escape that was.
-
Carlos: Let's make it about football this time.
Miguel: Yeah.
Carlos: Which football team do you support?
Miguel: Eh... Watford.
Carlos: [spits] Watford can't play to save their lives, amigo!
Miguel: I agree.
Carlos: Oh. Oh, well then, I don't agree! I think they can play. They just need a new manager!
Miguel: Yeah.
Carlos: Anyway. You're going to die!

No, no, no, no and no. No.
Please can we stop suggesting players who aren't defensive midfielders, and just buy a good one? Thank you. ;)
-

I haven't seen any of the pre-season games beyond the highlights, but has Young been playing further forward? I thought he'd been brought in to compete with Targett? If he's still got it going forward, then great, but hasn't he been playing as a left-back for about the last five years?
-
I think Watkins could play as DM. He's got the pace and legs for it........ hahaha, no, not ever, not really etc etc.
-
Gueye and Ayew (and maybe Westwood) were decent.
The rest is horrific.
-
I'd forgotten about some of them. Must be the mind's way of protecting you from trauma.

Christ on a bike…that’s scary! 😳
What was the result that day?
-
Bunn
Lyden, Lescott, Toner, Cissokho.
That must be the single worst keeper and back four combination in Villa's entire 150 year history. Bloody hell.
-
Truly depressing day out. Villa fans cheering as Arsenal’s goals went in. I honestly thought it would be our last premier league game for many years.

We conceded after 5 min as everyone expected us to do and then kept it “tight” until late on when they scored 3 times capped off by a Bunn OG. A bigger team of turds you’d be hard pushed to find. Final score 4-0.

Did a 'where are they now' for that lot. With the exception of Gueye, it doesn't make good reading.
Bunn - Retired
Cissokho - Thai league 2
Lescott - Retired
Toner - Spanish Division 4
Bacuna - Cardiff
Gueye - PSG
Westwood - Burnley
Sanchez - Free agent
Lyden - Swindon
Sinclair - Preston
Ayew - Crystal Palace
-
Lyden got promoted I think with Swindon. Think he's still a bit injury prone though.
-
That final game was our 12th defeat in 13 games. Subs that day:
1 (G) B Guzan
4 (D) M Richards (65)
25 (M) Carles Gil
40 (M) G Ratboy (75)
20 (F) A Traore
29 (F) R Hepburn-Murphy
39 (F) R Gestede

He came on Sunday there and looked like the Young of old. Gives us guile and looked 'in tune' with Targett.

Oh absolutely, I don't think we're bothering the European places until we do get a proper DM. I'm just outwardly wondering how much 'utility' he has.

We need to be realistic, we haven't started a season with three back-to-back wins in almost an entire year.

Any one fancy predicting the Watford starting 11....
Heard Will Hughes is training with their under 21s as he dosen't want to sign a new deal. Palace looking at him.
Usually with Watford they sign about 10 randoms from Spain and Italy but they haven't done that much business so far.
Their squad really wasn't that bad when they went down, just a bit old and complacent so they'd done stuff like taking out Ben Foster and putting in Bachmann in goal who had a good euros for Austria. And likes of Joao Pedro upfront instead of Deeney although he'll inevitably be lurking on the bench to unnerve us.
Sarr still there so him v Targett will be a good battle. Also signed Danny Rose and Joshua King so usual prem journeymen all promoted sides get in.
Their midfield is much much weaker than what they went down with. With Hughes in exile their options are:
Peter Etebo (on loan from Stoke)
Tom Cleverley (no he hasn't retired)
Ken Sema
Nathianel Chalobah
Dan Gosling
Juraj Kucka (just signed him from Serie A)
Massively disappointed if likes of McGinn can't dominate that.
-
Just seen on their forum they're interested in Nakamba. Think that will be a decent move if we can get a DM in next three weeks.
According to this Josh King and Pedro are injured so they'll be going with two unproven strikers upfront:

Villa have now joined West Ham and Newcastle as delusional fans who think they are massive clubs because they get 40k+ fans but seem to blind to the fact that none of them have won anything since colour tv ( apart from Villas flukey European cup win
Still sour cos we poached Sir Graham Taylor off them I guess.

early goal and a comfy win please Villa...
0-2 to the Villa

Bit strange to deride our success in the 80s, which coincides with the only successful period (runners up in League and Cup) for Watford.

Who tf are Watford, a club that has never won a thing, to make claims about anyone's delusions?! Pipe down and take your beatings.

Another of those clubs who scuffed their way into the Premier League, discovered fifteen thousand new supporters and think they're our equals. Before Sir Graham they were Walsall without the market.

Clueless twat (not you, eamonn!). That's what makes us massive, the fact that we do command those attendances and the lustful glances of billionaires despite having won fuck all in a generation.

Our history is one “flukey European cup win” and not being relegated by Goal Line tech.
I don’t know how we even sleep at night.

Our head to head history against Watford isn’t great. Played 21, won 8, lost 8, drew 5.
My favourite game was the 4-1 cup victory against them in 83. They had to put black tape over their shirt sponsor
-
How come?
-
Murphys' Mob deadbeats.
-
How come?
I think the game was chosen for MOTD highlights and shirt sponsors weren’t allowed on tv at the time. They must’ve packed the wrong shirts
-
Apart from winning the League, the European Cup, the European Super Cup, 4 League Cups, being League runners up twice, beaten FA Cup finalists twice and beaten League Cup finalists three times we’ve done nothing since the telly went colour.

We probably won't hit the ground running flat out, but I'm confident in our back four to keep it tight and you have to fancy Ings/Watkins to nick one, don't you?

Me, evidently.

Who is Watford's manager this week?
We do owe their board a debt of gratitude - sacking Pearson did as much as anything to keep up that year.

Now that O’Kelly has left, I predict us losing 4-0.

The start of a new is generally quite busy for us nerdy types. Just been updating my records.
The Watford game will be our 1001 premier league match. Here's our record for the first 1000:

Good news Buendia is fit for Watford.

Great news.
-
Dean is going to upset a few tomorrow who think they should be starting but will be on the bench
Competition for places is key for improvement in our team
-
When is the presser? Usually done by now but can't find a mention.
-
1-1
And a bit of a reality check.
-
Mark Lawrenson's prediction comments for this were quite amusing. "Aston Villa looked like an established Premier League side by the end of last season" - yes, because earlier in the season when we were beating Liverpool 7-2, winning 3-0 at Arsenal and generally spending all of our time in the top half of the table we didn't look like an established Premier League side at all.
Unfortunately he's predicted us to win so I can only forsee gloom.

Watkins a doubt...

The start of a new is generally quite busy for us nerdy types. Just been updating my records.
The Watford game will be our 1001 premier league match. Here's our record for the first 1000:

Our record is pretty garbage against a lot of teams... Having said that, we've a 100% Premier League record against Swindon!
-
Great to hear Buendia's fit and sounds like Bailey will be in the squad too.
The Buendia news has really fucked with me for my FPL team though, I may need to move on to my 85th draft team.

will it be televised anywhere ?
-
Bailey will be on bench i think unless watkins is injured. Scrap that forgot we got ings now!
I think buendia will start along with AEG. Traire hasnt ahd enough minutes to start
-
Bert rated 50/50 too, but seems like Buendia will start and Bailey is available
-
Assuming Bailey, Traore, Sanson, Luiz, Davis and Watkins are unavailable;
Martinez, Cash, Targett, Konsa, Mings, Nakamba, McGinn, Young, Buendia, El Ghazi, Ings
Subs Steer, Tuenzebe, Hause, Ramsey, Chucky, Philogene-Bidace, Wesley
Should be enough there to get a win but always most unpredictable first few games so i'll sit on the fence and say 1-1

9 subs so can add 2 more. Bailey will probably be one of them and it wouldn't surprise me if Hourihane was included as well.
-
We usually get all the premier league games on the TV
This one is not being shown. The only one not to be shown.
I looked on Villa TV and there is only a radio broadcast. Must be a problem there, I seem to remember the same problem the previous time we played them
Villa win

We've lost more than we've won and we have a negative goal difference. Fcuking shit. Right...let's go back to 1992 and start again...

Three points please lads.
0-2 Villa

He can't win!
-
1-1
And a bit of a reality check.
I also think a draw on grounds of new starters but sounds like you would be as happy as a pig in shit if we lost.
-
1-1
And a bit of a reality check.
What reality is being checked exactly?
-
That top six is fanciful and get back to your midtable mediocrity.
-
hoping to hell I'm wrong and I come home with a smile on my face. Difficult game in a ground with not a lot of atmosphere. I would fancy us more if Watkins was fit.
-
We'll twat these by a few, I reckon. Our back 5 will continue where they left off, and Watford won't get a sniff. Comfortable and convincing 0-3, and we're off and running.
-
will it be televised anywhere ?
Peacock in the US.
-
They won 19 out of 23 at home last season. Fair fucks.
-
According to Gregg Evans at the Mail Buendia and Bailey will both be available tomorrow, though Bailey surely won't be ready yet?
-
The Villa side will take a little time to bed in; Watford will have the promoted-club bounce. 2-2.
-
Lots of positive news that all the new signings are available.
Watkins a doubt.

Tend to agree with you but I can’t see Watford scoring twice against us.
-
we know Watford will be right up for it
they will come out to have a go from the off
if we know that surely Dean does as well
That’s why I’ll be disappointed if we are getting steamrollered in the first 30 mins
and the match thread is littered with stuff like
‘We haven’t turned up’
‘we don’t look fit’
‘Dean needs to sort this out’
‘we were always going to struggle to find our feet without Grealish’
That would piss me right off
We need to fight fire with fire
Dean needs to have them ready and prepared ready to take the game to Watford
we have the quality to do so
if we don’t hit the ground running we will be chasing the game again and we all know how that normaly works out
Result - no idea
but we should be winning with our players and squad
No excuses
-
I think we'll have too much for plucky Watford and extinguish their candle in the wind.
0-2 Ings, Konsa
-
The threat of newly promoted sides away is evident tonight.
-
Of course a newly promoted side will be very up for it. But the difference here is that it’s nationally televised and Brentford’s first ever game back up. Watford I think won’t be as challenging as they are coming back up and one of many games. So I still think if we do our jobs professionally we will win
-
You into jinx TV!
-
You into jinx TV!
Haha I don’t believe in them but I will go into hiding if we get done tomorrow now mate
-
We have a far better squad than Arsenal. They couldn't cope with s newly promoted club, we will do far better.
-
According to the guardian reported the line up to be
Martinez
Cash. Konsa. Mings. Targett
Nakamba McGinn
Buendia Ramsey Young
Ings
-
Graham Searles Guardian:
Aston Villa will be keen to scale even greater heights this season and a trip to Watford could allow an easy road towards doing exactly that. Dean Smith’s rock-solid defence will be on hand to shut down attacking threats as per usual but with Jack Grealish gone, Leon Bailey isolating, Douglas Luiz not back from Olympic duty and Emi Buendía and Ollie Watkins doubtful, Villa look more than a little threadbare across the rest of the pitch. The evergreen but non-threatening Ashley Young’s presence on the wing says it all regarding what might prove a sluggish start at Vicarage Road.
-
Really looking forward to today and meeting up with the Bournemouth Lions. Its been so long since an away game. Despite a few missing, let's hope the team can get us off to a good start.
-
Enjoy everyone going today. I am going next weekend and can't wait.
-
I just hope we dont put in such a gutless performance as arsenal did against a newly promoted team.
It wont click straight away for us as team will need tk gel. I have a feeling JPB might start.
Dont expect sanson to be on bench yet.
I think buendia will start bailey on bench and i think ollie might miss out leaving ings alone up top
-
It's quite exciting really, it's going to be a very different feeling Villa team than walked onto the pitch against Spurs and Chelsea. Our big advantage being that we have the stability of an established back five that performed superbly for large amounts of last season. Going forward I don't think that anybody knows what to expect... I'm keen for 3pm.
-
Sarr will be dangerous and their fans will be buzzing but I have a good feeling today. Ings to get 2. 2-1 Villa.
-
Brentford looked more match fit last night and obviously didn't have all the players coming back from the Euro's (well 4 of them) and the injuries like arsenal. Seeing we're putting out a bit of a scratch side as well, gotta hope we're up for it because Watford will be first game back.
-
Do we know who is going to be the new captain. I haven't seen it posted anywhere?
Smith said all would be revealed at last night's evening meal.
-
2-1 Villa Danny to get the winner
-
Happy New Villa Season Everyone! 😘😘
Troy Deeney to score for them, that much is certain!
-

Strange way of going about things …. seems pretty unprofessional to me - names out of a hat ?

Really???
-
JFWV..!!!!
-
I think this is potentially a really tricky game. It’s arguably the worst time to play a promoted side - they’ve not had the enthusiasm of promotion knocked out of them and the fans will be right up for it. We’ll need to be right at it today.
-
JFWV..!!!!
I have to admit I haven't a clue what that stands for.

So long as it's a hat containing only pieces of paper with the word "Mings" written on them, that'll do. 🙂
