Title: Aston Villa v West Ham pre-match thread - Wednesday February 3rd, 8.15pm
Post by: Risso on January 31, 2021, 01:48:53 PM
Live on BT Sport.

Games coming thick and fast. Win this and we're cementing our place in and around the European places. They've got Liverpool today so whatever the result in that we'll have two games in hand on both of them.

We owe them for last time, so would like a comprehensive 3-0 humping please.

They’re a good side. And they’ve spent a shed load over the past few years on some very decent players and are the same in terms of record away from home or in London. But I fancy us in this one.

2-0 to the real claret & blue - McGinn and Watkins

Watched a bit of West Ham yesterday - 10 defenders in the box every time Liverpool attacked and then the long ball to that non league forward who people seem to rave about (he is rubbish in my opinion)

Only look dangerous at corners and free kicks - reminded me of Wimbledon in the 80s

We will win 3-0

Haven’t they just signed Benrahma and 1 or 2 others? Hopefully it’s a bit too soon for them to slot in. We’ll see. I reckon West Ham have surprised a lot of people with their form this season, not least their own fans who were calling For ‘BGS’ heads at the start of the season on their podcasts, which was funny to watch. Haven’t watched it since the season started, but I bet they’ve changed their tune somewhat since then - the fickle  claret and blue bastards ; )

They're a bunch of keep it tight set piece merchants, like his Everton team were. They'll blow hot and cold, and they'll finish mid-table at best, hopefully we're catching them just as the slump begins, 3-1 to us.

Yeah, their midfield serves no constructive purpose at all, they are all break-it-up merchants. They will just try to keep it tight at the back and go long for Antonio or a bit of magic from Benrahma. They'll be happy to leave with a point.

Don't think so.  You can have it for a month at a time for £25 but I don't think its as easy to cancel as it is to join up.  Don't forget Saturday's game v Arsenal is on BT too.

Benrahma has just signed permanently but has been there on loan all season so won't really need time to "slot in". Their only other new acquisitions are a youngster from Denmark who, I assume, won't play, and Jesse Lingard on loan from Man U.

They did but we absolutely battered them in general play and chances created. Set pieces are a big concern obviously as they certainly are a bigger team than us. Fatigue is likely to be a problem for both teams.

thanks- hadn’t realised benrahma was already there on loan. Did he play in the Villa match? Don’t remember it if he did. Be interesting to see how Lingaard shapes up, as he could’ve been 40m quids worth of the 80m being touted as part of the Hrealish deal (in their eyes) to snare Jack up the M6. Cheeky bastards.

What's with the overall level of antipathy towards the Villa on KUMB Sendo?

We're all a bit salty after the away game (well I am) as we felt it was a game we dominated and conspired to lose,  but there's lots of hate towards us. Is there a particular incident?

You do realise though that we are still smarting from our defeat at your place. We were excellent that day and deserved more.

I think a general feeling of indignation given the proclivity for falling over at the slightest touch from a few of your last game. I always find it quite funny how we as football fans react to these sorts of things like it's a personal assault - myself included.

That game certainly wasn't our best, and Villa played quite well. Still, playing crap and winning was a nice change for us - normally it's playing shit and losing, or occasionally playing well and losing.

Yeah I expect Villa to be up for this one. A lot depends on how West Ham react to getting turned over by Liverpool. We certainly need to get at you more than we did at the London Stadum.

I don't think we'll stay where we are, and we'll start to slide back down the table as the fixtures pile up and injures start to hit. If we lose Antonio we're donald ducked.

It's hard to predict given how this season has gone, but somewhere from 8th to 12th most likely. I'll be gutted if we finish below Arsenal from this point though.

Don't get me started.

The lies, the mismanagement, the sheer amateurism, the interferrence, undermining the team, criticising our own players.

Not to mention all the high interest loans they've generously given the club.

We're about as badly run as a football club could be.

Aston Villa v West Ham Utd: Match thread
Post by sendô » Mon Feb 01, 2021 12:06 pm

Are you intimating that certain Villa players don't look to "win" fouls by throwing themselves to the floor at the merest hint of contact?

They do it every week, but at the reverse fixture it really was ridiculous, in part due to quite weak refereeing.

What is it the boss calls it? The axis of entitlement or something like that?

These lot think they're a massive club, on a level with Man Utd or Liverpool, and deserve to be one of the top teams year in year out regardless.

The reality is they're a **** house team with one decent player.

I hope we turn up and spank them. They've only got one goal a game in them. Score early and we can sit back and counter. Score a second and they might well crumble.

I thought Villa fans had thick enough skins to not get offended by a glib comment on a different team's fan forum several months and a season prior.

I'd have also thought most Villa fans would have agreed with that assessment of your side last season. You were a gnat's cock away from going down. Now look at you.

Fine margins and all that.

Not here to troll, or bitter (we're still 5th), but was interested to see your views of West Ham, how you lot see yourselves going forward and to have a bit of banter.

I used to like posting on here on occasion down the years, and I've only ever been respectful on this forum, given that I am a guest.

Good hearted football banter as I see it, on a West Ham site.

If you want to see slagging off you need to do a deep dive on the Spurs match threads on KUMB.

Like I said, I'd never go on an away forum and slate people or their team. I only come on here to discuss the match - you're the one who cross posted comments from KUMB.

I'm sure there are plenty of people on here who have slated West Ham into the ground before, but I'd happily have a chat and a bit of banter with them if they came over to KUMB, and wouldn't hold anything they said on here against them.

Lets not be too precious about things guys shall we.

If he had started calling individuals out or names then fair enough - he has every right to slag the team off. I actually like it in a way, not a stupid Millwall kind of way, but in the way that we are actually being talked about (good or bad) rather than the steaming pile of shite we were for many years and were basically an irrelevance to most.

We all know with the owners they have we should be sympathetic considering what we have.

As an aside Sendo it would be interesting to know who in your team on a player by player basis would you prefer over our first 11?

Genuinely mine would be

1
2
3
4
5
6 Rice over McGinn
7 Bowen over El Ghazi
8
9
10
11

Oh and Fredricks - so Jack can stamp on the twat (From the Fulham days)

Hmm combined XIs are always interesting.

I suppose looking at the West Ham team and who I'd sub out for a Villa player, I'd add Grealish and Barkley for sure. Watkins as a recognised striker - maybe Antonio when he's having a good day as he is unplayable, but Watkins for the other two thirds of the season.

Centre mid I'm happy with Rice and Soucek - we're as good as we've been there for a while. Harsh on McGinn and Luiz of course who are also very good. Bowen on the right.

Ogbonna next to Mings in defence. Not sure on full backs, but Cresswell seems to have had a renaissance this season, and has a wand of a left foot, and Coufal has looked solid. Toss up on the keepers.

I don't think there's masses between the teams tbh. Grealish is by far the standout player though.

Soucek and Rice in the heart of midfield.
Antonio when fit.
Bowen - blows a little hot and cold, doesn't he? But probably a pick on the right.
Konsa has to be in central defence - the outstanding CB from both teams.

Lost my login, couldn't get in, later realised my email address was entered wrong.

Never mind, I'm back for the Claret & Blue derby.

The proper one, no-one cares about Burnley.

Are you the same Sendo who keeps slagging the Villa on KUMB?

I'm just gutted we didn't send you down last game last season. I knew you'd come back a much better team this year.

So it was you who wrote this lot then?

This guy does demean himself a level below any blose.

Anneka has always had plenty of energy .     Bowen I kinda wanted at the Villa but he has looked a bit poor last few games at WHU , Soucek looks a good player , not sure about Benrhama yet , we got the best Brentford player out the two.

West Ham are in a position to talk about that though, they certainly weren't talking about champions league after moving house and finishing seventh...

It’s all very two faced. We have no issue with fans of other clubs coming on here and having good conversation and a bit of fun. But don’t then slag us off behind our back. It’s no different to any relationship to be honest. You wouldn’t like it if a friend or simply an acquaintance  did it that you thought were decent only to find out they were wankers to you elsewhere. Too bad.

When we beat Wolves I dipped into Molineux Mix to see how they had took the defeat against us after all the "mind the gap" bollox. The massive meltdowns and hissy fits on there were hilarious and I pop in sometimes when they have a bad result just to cheer myself up. It's great fun when I'm bored.

you might be well right there  - A game we expect to win, never works that way
totally agree with that sentiment ....not a "must win" more a "should win"  if we are to be seen as a club on the up with designs on the top half of the table ......as stated earlier I fancy a 2-2

I'd go with;

Martinez

Targett
Mings
Konsa
Cash

Dougie
McGinn

Barkley

Grealish
Watkins
Traore

Think the same XI is right. We dominated the ball and the chances back in November and I think that's a higher quality side attack wise.

I would expect them to take measures to try and stop Grealish which when you take into account the workmanlike nature of their midfield, ought to see us dominate the ball and territory again.

The question is whether we can take chances, as we missed sitters back in November. I'd take Mings and Konsa out of the zonal marking and put them on Soucek and Dawson, as I feel the percentage ball will be where they're most dangerous.

Important that we win. We'd go above them and have two games in hand.

I couldn't care less about most of the comments from Sendo but the idea that we dive any more than anyone else in the league is utter bullshit. Players go down under small contact all the time because if you go down you get a free kick if you don't the ref ignores it, that's a problem with officiating not with players. Any game you like you can pick out a number of free kicks where players have gone to ground when they didn't have to, just because Grealish draws so many tackles that he gets more chances to go down than anyone else people accuse him of diving but it's no different to most attacking players in the league, he's just better at moving the ball away from players than most people.

On the game this is another like Southampton where they owe us after a lucky win (the disallowed goal/non penalty was a shocking decision) and I think we'll have a similar battling win, 2-0, Ollie and Jack.

It might just be me but in recent games it's seemed like there's been less fouls involving Jack. Could be our opponents changing tactics to try to stop him without giving away so many free kicks. Teams are doubling up on him and in Burnley's case trebling up on him. Could be that Jack himself is trying to shake off his perceived reputation for diving and is making a deliberate effort to stay on his feet more. Could be the amount of alcohol I've been shifting while watching the boys. Does anyone gave any stats that could clear this up either way?

When we beat Arsenal early on in the season at Highbury just after promotion in 1988 one Villa fan near us seemed to spend pretty much the whole game singing "He's bent he's bent his arse is up for rent Perry Groves, Perry Groves". Never before or since have I encountered a fan who sang on his own so long and loud.

As for the Villa v West Ham game I suspect it could well end in a draw. West Ham very rarely impress me when I watch them on TV but they have been getting decent results.

I have no issue with him being a West Ham fan and being a fan that doesn’t care for much about us or any other club for that matter on his own sites. But there is a bit of difference between that and where he went with his comments seeing as he comes on here trying to be mates. Doesn’t work that way.

Re, Sendogate  I seem to recall we also had a resident Albion fan, Liam or something, that was nice a pie yet gave us utter dogs abuse on his message board.  If he came on and said that shit on here than fair enough feck him off but he seems respectful enough on here and that's what matters. To paraphrase my old man, ''He can behave how he wants in his own house but not in ours.''

On to the game, I think they are in a false position. If we play well we'll win and win well.  If. 2-0 the Villa.

I don’t really give a toss about Sendo I don’t think I’ve ever interacted with him
I have no problem with him coming on posting stuff either

Most of my family are Man United fans
my parents were season ticket holders in the Stretford end up until a few years ago

I slag Man United, Man United fans, and everything Man United off all the time
I fucking hate that club and despise everything about them

My family know this but they still love me and even speak to me
So I won’t be getting my knickers in a twist over sendo

Sendo always seemed like one of the sounder away fans we've had. I thought the surprise/issue wasn't the fact that he slagged Villa off on his own club's forum (all is fair in love and football etc.) more that he said something a bit snidey about us H&V posters on there (someone quoted it a while back) which was a bit surprising given how polite he is on here.

I've yet to meet a fan of another club who isn't happy to slag off any another club when with their 'own'.  It's part of the tribal nature of football.  There are plenty of clubs I quite like, plenty I have no feelings for either way, but if they were playing in our league, with at least two fixtures a season, you can guarantee I'd be happy to slag them off on here if I felt the slightest need to do so.

And frankly, I'm a lovely person :-)

I don’t have much of a problem with Smith naming an unchanged starting line up, but I do wish he’d make fuller and earlier use of his substitutions.

Having said that, I’m still going for a 2-1 win, with the usual backs against the wall for the last ten minutes doing my blood pressure no good at all.

Having watched West Ham a few times this season I honestly don’t think they’re all that. They’re in a false league position and will slowly sink back to a mid table position. We could do too of course but I don’t think we will - we just look a much better team than them and certainly a much more entertaining one.

2-0 to us.

That was one of many shit days daytripping at the Holte End for me......As for comments on other forums it’s flattering really. They all would sell their nans to see Grealish there.  And I’ve never met a hammers fan who hasn’t used colourful language. But cheating? If teams didn’t try and lawnmower our players down.........

This feels a really big game in defining the direction of the rest of our season to me. Despite their position in the table I honestly believe all things being equal we are a better side than them. Win this and the top 6 is on our sights with games in hand on most.
They’ve done well this season in a workman like way, I don’t think it will last and their bubble will burst (excuse the pun). I really hope we  don’t blow it. Manage their corners and free kicks much better than the game at their place.
3-0 (Watkins, McGinn, Barcklay)

I could be just a lifetime of supporting the Villa but I'm starting to feel a bit nervous before matches in a way that I didn't in the first half of the season. The past few matches have seemed a bit laboured - it could be the effects of the covid break but I get the impression we've been worked out a bit. Burnley and Soton looked to put more pressure on the Martinez-Mings-Konsa triangle to stop us playing comfortably out from the back. It was noticeable that we couldn't do the thing where Mings and Konsa wait in the corners of the box for goalkicks, forcing Martinez to punt longer more often. Moyes is not daft so we'll see if he does something similar.

Being exiled in Essex for the last 25 years this is the big game for me.  For the first 15 years it didn't seem important because the Hammers played pretty football but still got relegated every couple of years whilst we stayed as one of the 7 teams never out of the Premier League.  Lately we seem to fuck up against West Ham though including not being able to beat 10 men for most of the game last year and then gifting them two goals and then being screwed by VAR earlier this season.  It's all a bit strange at the moment with West Ham supporters getting excited about "Champions League places" whilst playing eye bleedingly shit football - whatever happened to the "West Ham way"  lose 5 in a row and they'll all soon remember and be baying for the Porn Barons out.  Now they have JLingz probably making his debut and although he is and has been shit I can just see him smashing in a 35 yarder in the last few minutes.  Come on Villa do it for me and the West Ham and smash these fuckers.  5 - 0 Villa please!

The in-laws are all Sheff Utd fans. They all hate West Ham because of the Tevez thing. They've also got a bit big for their boots after last season. Whilst I don't let on, I secretly hope they keep losing. I would have been happy for them to finish 17th so that next season I could walk to the match again, however, now I don't want them to get enough points to do it.

Back on off-topic, West Ham and their scummy owners and bent deal for their ground can get fucked as far as I'm concerned.

Have a feeling could inflict a heavy defeat on West Ham this evening. Certainly all these red cards coming about would see West Ham have some one off help our cause.
Anyone else see a 4 or 5 goal win?
Only a matter of time before we rack up a few goals against opposition. Why not West Ham . Or Arsenal Saturday
I really don't see anything like a 4 or 5 goal hammering (no pun intended) West Ham are a well organised team that carries a serious goal threat. If we do win this it will be tight. I'm thinking the Jack & Ross show could be pivotal. They could give a debut to Lingard who is tricky and quick but another imperious performance from Konsa should keep him quiet. Looking forward to this one.

I remember towards the end of the season we got relegated in 87, Warren Aspinall scored a hat trick as we battered them 4-0. Hope sprang eternal of an unlikely great escape, I think that hope lasted approximately a week before normal relegation service was resumed

Massive game tonight, don’t get caught out in a burnleyesque fashion from corners and we can do these.

I was with him for a while. He put across a really good coherent defence of Jack but decended into the massive club, fantastic stadium, bigger fanbase, won more trophies approach which caused him to lose all his "welcome friend" priveliges. He was all downhill after that. One of their fans came back with "our fans are better looking than yours. Harder than yours and wear smarter clothes than yours" I had to giggle at that one.

Same. In a bored moment the other day, I took a look at the Grealish thread on the main ManYoo site, to see their evolution from "why waste £40m on him when he'd never play ahead of Martial and Lingard", to now and them seeing him as the best player in the league and the obvious heir to Rooney and Cantona.

A SIGNIFICANT number of posts over the last year were from a long-standing poster of this very parish.

We will more likely as not be the far better team for 75% of the game playing football as good as you will see anywhere in the league. We will more likely as not be creating chances. If we convert then what happens in the other 25% of the game will not matter.
This is the likely scenario for the next 7 or 8 games.
