We go again. Not surprisingly unchanged. No Barkley yet, but Konsa on the bench.

Shame Barkley isn’t back. Good Konsa is back in the squad.

Win please.

Not really though is it. He can’t play against Chelsea so why bring him back for 1 game and upset someone who played well against the baggies.

Barkley might as well rest properly and be ready for the game after Chelsea.  Our home record is nothing to write home about, we need to address that, starting today.

if he was fit he would at least make the Bench.

I wish Dean would be honest in his pressers about injuries - we're not going to see Barkley til 2021, he's parent-tied for the Chelsea game even if his hammys were up to it.
If he's going to miss half our games through injuries just fuck him off back to Chelsea.

Barkley is back in training. I don’t think him not being included is anything more than him getting back to speed. By the end of the festive period of games he will be starting again. As will Konsa. We have played well the last few games and should have 9 points from the last three. Barkley makes us better but we still should have what it takes to beat Palace without risking a key player too quickly.

Barkley can't play at Chelsea anyway so he would be back for this game and then miss the next one so I can see why he has been allowed extra time for recovery.

There's a video of Barkley in his under crackers while McGinn rolls about in his turkey suit, so he must be in full training.

We can still do this, despite no Barkley. I have a pile of ironing looking back at me in the sitting room to crack on with it soon, as I find it impossible to relax and watch Villa, even when they're on the telly (radio only commentary is worse though, mind)!

2-1 to us. Don't care who scores.

I said after he got injured against Brighton and the prediction was one game we would see him back for the Manure game based on Villa’s version of injury clear ups.  I was only joking.  Jeez.

That sounds like a carry on film!

Bit gutted about Barclay and bit of a concern he’s not on the bench, but maybe it is just to give him extra recovery time. Won’t be an easy game this, we really need to win at home

It existed against the baggies. Not his fault the dumb fuckwits at VAR chalked it off. Watkins to score a brace in a 4-1 win for the Villa boys from Aston.

He doesn't ....but only need one centre half on bench . Surprised that one centre back is Konsa, might not be fully fit I guess.

Barkley not even fit enough for a spot on the bench is worrying

0-0 half time, Konsa to come on as a 78th minute sub. Scores 5, 3 assists, we win 8-0 and Ezri begins to restore his tarnished '38 goals a season' reputation.

Anything less will be a bitter blow.

I have no idea how you have this stat, but we are the top side in the PL in terms of "pressing". But lets say that's true. What an improvement that is the side we saw last year where we stood off teams and were carved open all too often. It not only suggests tactically improvements but just a belief and togetherness we haven't seen in a long time at the club.

Its the "front-foot football" we were promised 2.5 years ago. I think it just took a couple of windows to get the recruits up to the task. An absolute pleasure to watch.

In the pre season we got promoted we had to rebuild a whole squad with older players, youngsters and loan players all leaving for various reasons and had to build a squad pretty much from scratch. Added to that our January transfer business wasn't great. This pre season/season we have invested wisely and well.

When we have the ball and we have to take the game to them we're a bit guilty of just thinking too much at times and slowing down the play allowing them to get back into space. The mark of a classic counter attacking team that doesn't have the players to dictate at home.

correct. Apparently he and Doug had a big fight and he just had enough. He was also never afraid to have a dig at Doug publicly so it was always falling apart. That was at the time it was thought George Graham was going to be our manager.

If people think JAck buys fouls just watch Zaha.  Got them a free kick on the edge of the box by kicking McGinn, then fouled Mcginn but got awarded a free kick for his reaction to Mings, also getting Mings booked.  Then he nudges Mings before chucking himself to the floor.  Absolute cnut, but the ref is worse for being fooled by it all the time. .

Was it a straight red?

No, he’d been booked for the spat with Zaha.

I didn;t see a second yellow looked like a straight red to me.

Nah you don't get a straight red for that, was too far up the pitch.

It's just a standard yellow but the problem was him being stupid with Zaha and being on a yellow on the first place.

Going to be tough now but not impossible to still get a win, we should be more than 1 up anyway.

Watkins been brilliant out wide.

If that's the case then it's very harsh. No way it was a clear goalscoring opportunity.

This ref is an utter clown

I don't see what the ref did wrong. Mings was on a yellow. That was fucking stupid. First he got done with the positioning as the ball came in and then he pulled Zaha back. That's a yellow all day long.

It wasn't a yellow. He put his hands on his chest and he feet went out from under him?!

Eh? He was on a yellow. He got turned easily. He then put his hands on the player and he fell. It was every bit a foul as Jack's penalty win vs Albion the other day.

Yeah, its a foul in the middle of the park. It wasn't a clear chance to goal, it wasn't reckless or dangerous. It's a foul.

No one got a yellow for the late pen against WBA?!

It's definitely a second yellow that the camera missed, otherwise VAR could've checked it.

And it was the right decision within the rules. Maybe VAR should be able to check second yellows, but as it can't it was 100% a foul by Mings and he should be getting a very stern telling off for it.

We have to be so much better in possession in the second half.

In a way I don't think losing a CB is that bad as won't impact on our shape much, will just lose one extra player for the counter attack. More worried if we'd had lost a CM as then someone like Eze would get freedom of the park to pass and probe.

We will still get chances on the break just like all the teams we lost to last season once they went down to 10 men got.

Mings has been dire all half too. From the off turning like an oil tanker. Absolutely no need to get involved in that foul on McGinn from Zaha. If we don't win this, he wants the biggest kick in the arse.

Zaha has done Mings and the ref twice there - first yellow Mings did nothing but step over McGinn to get the ball and Zaha acted like he's been walloped.

But our tendency to self destruct wouldn't matter so much if we could just fucking finish.  The chances we've missed against Burnley, Albion and today we could and should have had 15 goals.

Thought the ref got the decision on Mings right to be honest, though Zaha is over aggressive yet again, and could of got sent off. I would of taken El Ghazi off instead of Traore, who was again having a very good game. Also think refs having a good game and was brave effectively over ruling var.

Will be tough now, if we can just hold them off for 10 mins and grab one on the break. They look dangerous going forward, but Scott Dan is very slow at the back.

Don’t understand the slagging Mings is getting here - he didn’t do anything on his first booking, and the second one was soft as Zaha went down like a sack of shit. Zaha was lucky not to get a red for his reaction on the first foul, and could quite easily have conceded a penalty so shouldn’t be on the pitch.

Would've liked another look at that. Even the next cross the Palace defender makes a bit of contact on him.

The game management is light years ahead of last season.

In this situation 12 months ago we'd just be smashing clearances into the stand every time and not be able to keep the ball for more than 3 passes.

Hause has been fantastic, don’t think Mings will be starting a game again for a while.
As Mings tweeted himself: a team needs every player in the squad. QED.

Fuck me. Ollie has been very good leading the line and he must wonder whether he will ever score again. First saved and then hits the post

You can see Ollie getting more and more angry with himself. That is seriously unlucky.

Watkins has been brilliant. Ok; we all want him to score. But he’s occupied their whole defence tonight.

Where as Benteke....

Special mention for Emi tonight. The most composed goalie we’ve had in ages, and has done a lot of really really good stuff tonight when he needed to.

I've noticed a lot of commentators have mentioned in our games about how 'not at their best' the opposition have been, as if the common denominator must be something other than us.

Absolutely. If he'd wanted to be flashier he could have made this look like an amazing keeping performance. But because he makes everything look so routine, it ends up looking like he's not needed to do much.
