This will be the end of Dean Smith. It will be sad for all of us because we all remember how last season ended and how very much we wanted one of our own to be an incredible success.

Perhaps not ever again, but certainly within that time span man will have terraformed Mars, we will all be living on the last remaining piece of land mass left on planet earth known as the Isle of Wight, somewhat overcrowded, due to global warming and Bowis Johnson our great albino prince will still be getting it done.

Oh yeah!!! Covid 19 will have mutated by then into Covid 99 so those of us left will have a permanent cough, feel quite hot and sticky but we'll get a free flake from the ministry of health to chomp on.

I think 3-5-2 might be the formation that suits us the most at the moment, but there are still some major holes in the side even with that formation.  Like you, I would like to see Davis and Samatta start together up top with Grealish playing in behind them.

This is our best most proactive starting XI by putting our best team on the park and we just must try and win the game. That means Conor for his dead ball delivery and 2 up top with Jack playing further forward. Time to take some risks but be more proactive.  No time of Luiz, AEG or Trez in this one.

              Nyland

Elmo    Engels    Mings    Targett

              Nakamba
 SJM                     Hourihane
               Super Jack

         Samatta  Davis

Like this line up OZvilla but Smith would never start with two up front.
It looks like if the match goes ahead it will be behind closed doors.
That's another reason we won't get anything from it as the only good thing about Villa at the moment is our fans.

Title: Re: Aston Villa vs Chelsea Pre-Match Thread
Post by: OzVilla on March 12, 2020, 07:00:53 AM
Well personally it's because I think we've looked a better side this season when he's played and he certainly gives us more of a threat from set pieces. He obviously has draw backs to his game but I think we need to be braver, especially at home. It's imperative we get out of the relegation spots asap with whats going on so that means jagging a win from somewhere.

The alternative is to play one of Luiz, AEG, Trez Elmo or 3 at the back and none of those have been working for us.   4-4-2.  It wont happen obviously.

Was hoping corona meant an empty stadium and I wouldn’t have to go!! Could be bad this, hope not. Hope by some miracle he plays Davies around Samatta and uses 5 at the back as it was meant to be used with wing backs. Think Guilbert has decent season but last few weeks rabbit in the headlights so would take him out. He won’t risk McGinn from the start. I’d probably go with

Nyland
Mings
Engels
Konsa

Elmo
Nakamba
Luiz
Grealish
Targett

Davies
Samatta

But he’ll never go with this.

Specific matches which are deemed at potential risk like Man City Arsenal the other night will be postponed .
At this moment Villa and Chelsea are clear to play

The plan is that the current season will not be postponed and instead matches in the Premier League and lower divisions will be moved behind closed doors.
When this begins, yes who knows, initial announcement is expected near future.

Yes we were punished for trouble at the semi final against Anderlecht by having to play a game the following season behind closed doors. Think it was against Besiktas, or maybe a Moscow team.

Aston Villa v Besiktas

European Cup, September 1982

Villa were forced to open their defence of the European Cup in an empty stadium. Uefa imposed the order after incidents at the second leg of the semi-final against Anderlecht in the previous season. The Belgian club asked Uefa to expel Villa from the competition but the punishment was a fine of £14,500 and the stadium closure. Villa defeated Besiktas 3-1 at home and then drew 0-0 in Turkey.

Given everything that’s going on around Europe, I can see stadium ban for fans over this weekend and following weekends. Totally understandable as much bigger things going on than football, but that will be one more advantage amongst many advantages that Chelsea, and if it’s Smiths last game, it’ll be a bit tragic that it will be in an empty stadium.

Only half joking in the hope that premier league games are called off for the next few weeks

For one reason or another I rarely get to VP, but when I do go, with my son, we always win (in  the 16 - 17 season we went to two home matches: Cardiff and Norwich).
This is our first visit this season (it's a special birthday treat(!) for me) so I have to say, against all the odds, we are going to get a result.

Thank you for update .
I would therefore conclude that the match should be postponed .
And trust that there is no way the match will go ahead due to risk of further spreading.
Aston Villa football club should take that decision.
Despite the government advice, of people who have come into contact with somebody who might be infected are not considered cases and will only be tested if they also become unwell.
I think it's unwise.

Once it gets in amongst the playing staff it's over until everyone is recovered - else you'd have teams still having to play with players missing when other teams didn't have to.

Once they suspend I think, if you believe the Govt projections, it'll be suspended for months.

I'm happy that we didn't have to play the Chelsea game behind closed doors.
Our fans are the only positive about us at the moment.
A suspension of the league is now looking more likely by the hour.
Who knows what that will mean for the future.
If Euro 2020 is called off maybe the season could be extended.
I hope the season can ultimately abandoned then at least we can go again in August (hopefully).

I think our defence has been self-isolating for weeks.

Hudson - odoi tested positive ,game 100% off now

I think we need to look at the bigger picture, do what's best for the players and society as a whole, and.......deduct Chelsea three points and award them to us.  Then cancel the season. It's only fair.

I think every premier League game apart from ours should be cancelled. Ours must be played. And if Chelsea don't turn up (they aren't allowed to) we get the points.

Seems fair to me.

All Premier League matches have been postponed until 3 April because of the coronavirus.

Prem league officials meeting today, they love to protect the London clubs and will want their better players available.  Match will be off.  They key question is: when will they be able to finish the season?

Pools panel verdict Home Win.

I don't think the pools panel met in person due to Coronavirus. I  believe it was done for the first time by conference call.

With all the postponements I can guarantee I have broken even on my weekend football bets.

Non runner, non runner, non runner non runner, non runner....

We are pleased to say that all of the food has now been allocated to a number of homeless charities and housing shelters.

Thank you Twitter for ensuring this food doesn’t go to waste and it is going to those who will really benefit 👏 https://twitter.com/avfcofficial/status/1238435393957171200 …

How can we go from being a complete bag of shit on the pitch to being such a classy outfit off it? If we could just find that balance!

Fantastic stuff from the club. Probably won't get the recognition the club deserves. The media will probably put a spin on it something like "AVFC causes obesity crisis in the homeless community"

Reported very positively on the BBC (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51882016).
Nice touch by Brighton to pay their match day staff regardless.

I’ve seen very nice comments, like in Henry Winter’s column yesterday, on Twitter and on The Last Leg.
