Liverpool: Kelleher, Hoever, Boyes, Van den Berg, Gallacher, Chirivella, Christie-Davies, Kane, Longstaff, Hill, Elliott.
Substitutes: Winterbottom, Clayton, Dixon-Bonner, Bearne, Clarkson, Norris, Stewart.

I am far more worried than I should be about this game seeing that line up considering its the Liverpool youth team. If we lose this the abuse will be horrific from non Villa fans. I swear to God i will be going into hibernation unless we win and win well.
-
I don’t think I have heard of any of that Liverpool team. Not even Brewster there. If our reserves can’t turn these over than we don’t deserve to progress
-
One of a few players we really might have worried about is Brewster... injured
-

That would be nothing compared to the abuse we'd give the manager/team if they fail to win this. No excuses.
It's a no-win situation for Villa this game.... If we win, it will be classed as a hollow victory, but we have EVERYTHING to lose if we don't see it out professionally. Need a couple of early goals to ease the pressure.
-
I suspect Dean has picked this team because he knew they would have to play their youth team
-
Liverpool's kids will play without pressure and run themselves into the ground.
Unless we match their work rate and then use our greater experience the result could be embarassing.
-
Harvey Elliott is the only name I recognise. From their team I mean, I know our players..
-
Quite surprised not to see Archer and/or Ramsey given a chance.
-
I wouldnt have put SJM on the bench . He needs a complete rest away.
Id have had Ramsey or some other youth.
-
I hope I'm wrong but looking at that line up I am getting the fear/feeling of that Uefa Cup tie against CSKA Moscow.
-
I’m happy with that team
let’s see how they get on now in a game they should easily win before you factor in the Villa fuck up odds
-
3-0 Kodj (3)
-
This one's on DAZN so I get to watch it!
Nice to see Chester back. Let's hope Kodjia really puts in a good performance too, just to give signs of life that he could step in for Wesley if needed.
As for Liverpool, those double-barrelled names ... Lucky for us that Ponsonby-Smythe is out.
-
In a sense we can't win either way here, but I think Smith has picked a team that is entirely appropriate to the squad of players we have, the occasion, the opposition and an eye on the three or four vital games we have coming up after this one.
-
I'm worried - Youthful exuberance of the European Champions u23 side against a team of Championship level players that can't get a look-in in an underperforming, relegation threatened side.
I think this could be closer than we think. **Checks match odds
-
The usual cup line up. Reserves getting a run out. Very sensible approach. I expect to wake up to a semi tomorrow.
-
Fuck me, Paul Lamberts double managing the Liverpool kids.
-
Sky just said none of the Liverpool players were born the last time we won this cup. Sobering...
-
I'm supposed to be at this but I'm stuck at home waiting for an emergency plumber. What could possibly make my evening worse?
-
We'll win comfortably.
-
Watching it live in oz.
-
Very weird this one. Have to keep reminding myself it's for a place in the semis.
-
I'm supposed to be at this but I'm stuck at home waiting for an emergency plumber. What could possibly make my evening worse?
You get a sudden dose of the William Pitts?
-
Attacking the Holte first half
-
I'm supposed to be at this but I'm stuck at home waiting for an emergency plumber. What could possibly make my evening worse?
the plumber not turning up?
-
Plumber turning it up and it turning into a 70s porn film?
-
Not a brilliant start.
-
Playing us off the park at the moment!
-
didn’t someone say it would be 9 nil to us?
-
Nyland really doesn’t inspire confidence does he
-
There really can be no excuse for not beating these comfortably.
-
Christ almighty.
-
FFS Villa. Get hold of the bloody ball.
-
Sounds blinding already.
-
Have our players been coached? It doesn’t look like it at the moment
-
Yep this is easy
-
Liverpool have an annoying habit of always getting a result off us and often with a tinge of humiliation to kick us in the stomach...given our recent outings I fear another on the cards. Prove me wrong villa!
-
Totally shit so far.
-
They're the better team already!
-
Well played Nyland. The rest of you, fucking rubbish.
-
Other than ‘winning’ we can’t win here. Not helping that they’re keen as mustard and first to everything. Arse.
-
#69 Dixon-Bonner ... poor lad! 😂
ps. They’re going to knock us out of this. Much the better side so far.
-
Christ almighty.
-
Great save.
-
Plumber turning it up and it turning into a 70s porn film?
that's not a bad thing, well... apart from all that bush.
-
Hourihane the only one even trying out there.
-
Embarrassing
-
Fabulous save Orjan. That is not easy.
-
A young team who play every week together against our cobbled together 11 who do not play together at all.
Hmmm
-
If we fuck this up Dean is in trouble.
-
Right.....we are getting completely outplayed by the Liverpool youth team FFS!
-
Usual giving the ball away cheaply. Awful start. What on earth do they do on the training ground?
-
Taylor might as well have not been there.
-
We look pretty useless so far. Disappointing start from many of the fringe players.
-
We're going route one against children.
-
We are shit. If we lose this, I will be fucking fuming with Smith.
-
Glad we got the foul, but it would be nice if Trezeguet had any sort of left foot.
-
Utter garbage so far.
-
This game feels wrong men against boys and they're all over us
FFS
-
Glad we got the foul, but it would be nice if Trezeguet had any sort of left foot.
Honestly forgot he was playing.
-
This is Remi Garde all over again
-
We may have settled a little bit.
-
This is Remi Garde all over again
Maybe he is the 70s porn plumber?
-
Gooooaaaaalll
-
Nyland's distribution looks light years ahead of Heaton's.
-
Undeserved but will take it!
-
Scorchio?
-
Goooooooooooooolazo!!!
-
Right, now settle, and get a second quickly, please. Let's pretend that first ten minutes never happened.
-
Now get another 8.
-
Hourihane set piece changes things once again. Probably earns him a start for the weekend.
Hopefully we cam start playing properly now.
-
Fookin fantastic! Against the run of play but should settle us right down.
-
SCORRRRRRRRRRRRRCHIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
-
Hourihane should be playing every game. His delivery for previous free kick was dangerous as well. Set pieces are good and his attitudes good as well.
-
Conor good goal. Against the run of play.
Bit of crap atmosphere tbh
-
Hourihane the only one even trying out there.
Thanks for caring Conor. Can you remind the rest they're playing for the mighty Villa too? Thanks.
-
7 more to go!
-
Gooooaaaaalll
-
And it was jammy as fuck!
-
Another Scorchio?
-
Ah good they’ve woken up.
-
Conor good goal. Against the run of play.
Bit of crap atmosphere tbh
Freezing cold December night against the Liverpool tots
-
Ooops but they all count
-
Liverpool chance, still 2-0
-
It's so totally undeserved but we'll take it. UTV, let's make it 3.
-
Can we please settle down and try and play a bit of football please pretty please
-
I’ve only watched 3 minutes and I have no idea what you are all moaning about. Champagne football this is.
-
Jammy OG but there were a couple of very decent passes in the build up to it.
-
I’ve only watched 3 minutes and I have no idea what you are all moaning about. Champagne football this is.
Hah
-
At least Trez is trying to make an impression
-
Trez bien
-
Will someone please wack the twat with the man bun.
-
They're very good.
-
Will someone please wack the twat with the man bun.
Good player, 16 and he’s pissing all over Taylor
-
Will someone please wack the twat with the man bun.
I suppose that would count as child abuse.
-
Nyland making some saves wtf
-
We always seem to struggle against players with stupid hair. Even Lansbury looked good against us.
-
This has been fucking abysmal so far.
-
FFS stop these attack on our left hand side
-
We have had 1 shot on target and 41% posession, but lead 2-0.
Would you settle for, say, 5-0, with 1 shot on target and 40% possession?
-
Taylor fcuking woeful against this lad.
-
The commentator just mentioned Douglas Luiz. I hadn’t realised he was even playing
-
We have had 1 shot on target and 41% posession, but lead 2-0.
Would you settle for, say, 5-0, with 1 shot on target and 40% possession?
Don't care what the score is so long as we get through. But the reality is we're not playing well at all.
-
Kodjia drive me nuts.
-
The commentator just mentioned Douglas Luiz. I hadn’t realised he was even playing
The whole midfield are anonymous if you ask me. They are neither pressing or defending
-
This lot aren't much kop, how the fuck are they top of the league and champions of Europe?
-
Kodjia drive me nuts.
At least he is trying tk make thjngs happen. He is moving around and causjng skme problems. Unlike concrete boots wesley
-
Whoever is co commentating on WM, actually said , just prior to the first goal going in....
“If villa can score here the games done and dusted”
He must never have watched us !!
-
Kodjia drive me nuts.
At least he is trying tk make thjngs happen. He is moving around and causjng skme problems. Unlike concrete boots wesley
Why has his wrist still not healed?
-
This is truly terrible
-
The commentator just mentioned Douglas Luiz. I hadn’t realised he was even playing
The whole midfield are anonymous if you ask me. They are neither pressing or defending
I think we managed to uncover the only two Brazilians that aren’t much going at footie.
-
Garry Thompson.
-
SCORRRRRRRRRRRRRCHIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
-
Gooooaaaallll
-
They are first to the ball every time
-
Good finish, too.
-
Truly awful from us.
-

I think we managed to uncover the only two Brazilians that aren’t much going at footie.
We’re good at that. Remember Carlos Cuellar, the only Spaniard in the world that couldn’t pass?
-
Truly awful from us.
I know, should be 9 up by now!
-
He may not be the best, but Kodjia has shown more movement in 35 minutes than Wes has in the past 2 months.
-
Nice finish from Keith Lemon
-
This is the harshest three-nil scoreline in a Villa-Liverpool cup game since 1996.
-
Yes JK!!!
-
I know who i would starg Saturday. Time for wesley
to be dropped
-
He may not be the best, but Kodjia has shown more movement in 35 minutes than Wes has in the past 2 months.
Not hard. So has Bella the lioness
-
That’s the kind of goal Wesley would never score. Overran it a bit, got there and slotted through sheer determination.
-
Kodja took that well. He should be starting every match until January.
-
Leading 3-0 with no midfield! Lansbury and luiz are really awful.
-
He may not be the best, but Kodjia has shown more movement in 35 minutes than Wes has in the past 2 months.
Not hard. So has Bella the lioness
Good point.
-
Kodija (sic) scores!
-
I know we are winning but man Neil Taylor is fucking rubbish.
-
3-0 massively flattering us. But I’ll take it!
-
First tackle of the match, gets a yellow
-
Interesting to see our second XI aren't pressing the ball either.
We're 3-0 up, but they're by far the more acomplished side. I thought we'd be bullying them, men against boys etc, but far from it.
-
I doubt Wes would have even been in the same postcode to score the third goal. If JK comes through without any knocks then he has to start against Southampton.
-
Goooaaaallll
-
I know we are winning but man Neil Taylor is fucking rubbish.
Could go for a few of them. Luiz and Lansbury haven't broken sweat yet. Trez hopeless too.
Good to see Chester out there, Kodjia at least carrying a threat.
-
Glad we're winning 4-nowt but it's a bit harsh.
-
Awful just awful
-
Hat trick for Kodj?
-
4, Kodjia again
-
We have a striker
-
This is one of the weirdest halfs of football I've ever seen.
-
First bit of football we’ve played. However crap this is the good news is we may have a confident striker when we need one
-
First bit of football we’ve played. However crap this is the good news is we may have a confident striker when we need one
Well, so is there a case for bringing Wes on to get a couple?
-
This is a no win situation for us tonight
-
3-0 Kodj (3)
Ahem
-
Unconvincing but nevertheless 4-0 up
-
My god what is that villa 26 player doing? Keeps kicking the ball into the goal!!?
-
I'm in bed watching this on my phone, half asleep, with my mate at the game texting me what's going on. 4-0, good stuff. What an odd game
-
What a ridiculous farce this is.
-
This is one of the weirdest halfs of football I've ever seen.
Certainly up there with Sunderland in 1994. We were battered and won 4-1
-
Very simply Kodjia needs to start on Saturday
-
I'm following this on the RAWK match commentary thread and it's absolutely hilarious. They hate us.
-
This is one of the weirdest halfs of football I've ever seen.
There must be some kind of logic but I cant see it. Relieved anyway.
-
Just about where we should be v their kids.
-
One minute getting angry at inviting unnecessary pressure and flappery in our own box, next minute Jimmy Danger pokes another in. Infuriating and overly flattering.
Jota and Hourihane contributing which is encouraging.
All the same, this game is ours for the losing - and we still can.
+1 for giving Wes a holiday with Kodj in his place.
-
This is one of the weirdest halfs of football I've ever seen.
That's for sure.
We have had had 3 shots on target compared to their 4, and have had one corner to their 5.
We have conceded 2 fouls in 45 minutes.
-
That's that then, good technical side these lads at Liverpool and you can see some real future talent there, Harvey Elliott to name one, Hoever the other, I would be very inclined to bring Wesley on, get him amongst the goals, jog a few memories, he can't be tired, he's barely taken 2 strides all season.
-
Odd to be winning 4 nil at HT having not really celebrated once
I wonder when we will next be 4 nil at HT against Liverpool in a Competitive game
Sky and Jamie will be so pissed off
-
4-0 up at HT...even we’d do well to manage to fuck this one up now!
-
I’ve only watched 3 minutes and I have no idea what you are all moaning about. Champagne football this is.
Hah
I enjoyed that half more than the game thread!
-
First bit of football we’ve played. However crap this is the good news is we may have a confident striker when we need one
Well, so is there a case for bringing Wes on to get a couple?
No. Give JK a full run out and keep Wes on the bench so he doesnt think he has a given right.
-
Sounds weird, but make it 10 Villa please.
-
Rest Kodija now and let Wes have a go.
-
I’d feel a bit sorry for them. But this is Liverpool. FTFs.
-
Up the performance level please Villa.
-
Bringing Wes on now would send the wrong message to JK unless he decides to change formation and play Wes alongside him.
-
I wonder how our players felt seeing their line up earlier. Must have been odd. Hiding to nothing. We really haven’t got out of 2nd gear all night and in the few instances we’ve stepped it up we’ve scored. We’ve shown them a lot of respect, too much in fact.
And Neil Taylor is an abomination as a football player. We know it and so do they as they have targeted his side all game.
-
Rest Kodija now and let Wes have a go.
I'd play both of them and try out a different formation. Not like taking off either Lansbury or Luiz is going to leave us missing a great deal.
-
The youth of Liverpool doing fantastic. They are 4-0 down and tune in for the second half......gotta love Sky TV.
Please Villa score at least 4 more.
-
Get Wes on with about half an hour to go and hope JK has a definite hat-trick by then.
-
I explained the difference between under 23 and premier league players pre match
As well as informing that Liverpool under 23 are a mid table team who lost 4-0 away from home in their last match
The 9-0 or the record 8-1 scoreline isn't out of realms
Easily get between 5-8 goals as said pre match.
I know my football.
Men against boys.
What were people worrying about
-

What if Kod gets injured though.
We need to save him for Saturday

-
Did anyone else notice mid-way through the first half Lansbury lay a good pass off forwards and then seemingly turn around and face his own goal and, it looked to me begin berating a team mate for some reason or another instead of pushing forward to add extra impetus to the forwards. Shocking application.

-
I wish we had the footage from the last time we were 4 goals up against Liverpool at half-time.
-
Rest Kodija now and let Wes have a go.
I'd play both of them and try out a different formation. Not like taking off either Lansbury or Luiz is going to leave us missing a great deal.
Absolutely, you bring Wes on because he's cost the club a fortune and he needs to show just what he's playing for.

And Neil Taylor is an abomination as a football player. We know it and so do they as they have targeted his side all game.
That's a bit unfair, as he had no support on that side. Only a few minutes in it was and I think it was Treziguet stood still and literally just watching as a player ran past him and an overload developed on our left.
-
Im not counting my chickens on this one yet.
-

Nevertheless he is totally ineffectual.
-
Nyland’s kicking is a bit suspect
-
I see the half time team talk has made a difference
-
Nyland’s kicking is a bit suspect
Along with his catching, diving and throwing.
Other than that he’s sound.
-
4-0 up and we are really the second best footballing side out there. So bizarre. Liverpool are clearly outstandingly coached throughout their set up and have a number of technically gifted players coming through.
-
Nyland with a good save
-
In fairness, he played well first half. We could easily have been embarrassed early on if not for him.
And fantastic save there.
-
4-0 up at HT...even we’d do well to manage to fuck this one up now!
I would have preferred 5-1
-
I went on a lads holiday to Spain in my late teens, and we were challenged to a game of five a side by some of the local kids. They must have been about 11. They proceeded to kick the shit out of us - literally in some cases - in front of a crowd of fit women we'd been hoping to chat up.
I had visions of something similar happening tonight.
-
Outstanding save by Nyland. We are being opened up easily
-
That should have been a booking.
-
Nyland’s kicking is a bit suspect
His reactions are good though.
-
I see the half time team talk has made a difference
Dean’s normal trick.
-
Nyland with a good save
In on Saturday?
-
Nyland our motm so far tonight. Good saves and distribution throughout.
Embarrassing that our best player is the gk against an u23 side mind! 🙄
-
Nyland having a great game.
-
I just had four Carolina Reaper pork scratchings and I want to cry.
-

The question is did you score?.
-
Nyland having a great game.
Well that was nearly the kiss of death!
-
Agreed, Nyland playing a blinder so far. Those reaction saves are a fantastic trait. Where'd he learn that then??
-
Luiz looks knackered.
-
Why is our midfield always so anonymous lately?
-

No... and no.
*sad face*
-
Our football at times looks primitive compared to the Liverpool kids
-
Our football at times looks primitive compared to the Liverpool kids
Yes I feel like Villa are cursed to revert to dreadful football.
-
As a massive Aston Villa fan watching all this going on from a business trip in France and taking updates from my son watching the game back at home, I really hope Villa push on and give Liverpool what they deserve for their lack of respect and arrogance at a major English competition - a good hiding!!!
-
Trez should have scored. Lovely ball by Dougy
-
Should be 5
-
Liverpool sub...He's only about 9, are they allowing his mum to come on with him, just in case he scrapes his knees or something.
-
Fuck me Trezeguet. Wasteful again
-
Trez is such a weird player.
-
Our football at times looks primitive compared to the Liverpool kids
It is sobering to watch but they're a club that has been building for a few years now, they're Europeans champions, confidence is probably at record levels and they've obviously got a fantastic youth set up there. We're basically starting from scratch at all levels. Our club was so badly run for so many years that we're way behind most clubs, not just Liverpool.
-
Have to say Elliott has a bit of Messi about him
-
Why is our midfield always so anonymous lately?
No mobility or presence.
-
Jota has such a good footballing brain it's such a pity he has no pace.
-
Wesley coming on for Kodjia. Kodjia deserves to start Saturday
-
Wesley coming on soon
-
Another Trez effort
-

*Pours a scotch, nods and cries*
-
Trez yet again should have scored
-
On comes the Brazilian statue
-
I like Trez, I have a feeling next season he’s going to be a really good player for us.
-
Have to say Elliott has a bit of Messi about him
He seems to have such a great range of passing and good vision, looks a terrific prospect at this stage of his career.
-
We're expending the minimum amount of energy in this second half !
-
C’mon Wes get a fucking couple here son.
-
Here we go Villa's Neymar....
-
Is anyone really enjoying this game? It's not boring as the Liverpool line-up is a novelty if nothing else but it's very odd.
It's a bit like a Soccer Aid game.
The Villa fans are singing about John Carew.
-
Why not look at them together? I don't get that.
-
Have to say Elliott has a bit of Messi about him
Let's not get carried away now.
-
Wes on. Sit back, open the popcorn and enjoy the goal fest.
-
Right Wesley. Never gonna get a better chance, pal.
-
Trez should have scored more than Kodj.
-
Why not look at them together? I don't get that.
Because Dean won’t change his system.
-
Weird match weird thread. Has it ever felt flatter to stick 4 goals on and waltz into a semi final? Wonder what it’s like at the ground.
-
I’ve been mightily impressed with both keepers tonight.
-
Has an agreement been made that if we are winning by a significant margin we will not push for a humiliating scoreline?
-
Good shot by Angie and good save
-
Yes. That reflex save from nyland was incredible.
-
Hause on for Chezzie
-
Why not look at them together? I don't get that.
Because Dean won’t change his system.
What system?
-
Trez should have scored more than Kodj.
To be fair to Wesley, that was a lovely square pass, and Trez should have scored.
-
32.000 there I think the bloke said.
-
Has an agreement been made that if we are winning by a significant margin we will not push for a humiliating scoreline?
Our finishing would suggest that
-
Yes. That reflex save from nyland was incredible.
Nyland has been superb, apart from his kicking
-
Why not look at them together? I don't get that.
Because Dean won’t change his system.
Its the eleventh commandment. Thou shalt not change tactics, or is that Tic Tacs
-
Is that nick cave sat behind the Liverpool technical area?
-
I hope Wesley watched how Kodjia leads a line and learned from it.
-
They are starting to take the piss. We need to bag a couple more. Wankers
-
30,323
-
The commentary I’m watching is like watching Liverpool TV. We’re doing a professional job and getting some miles into a few players legs. Not sure much more we could have expected.
-
Why not look at them together? I don't get that.
Because Dean won’t change his system.
Its the eleventh commandment. Thou shalt not change tactics, or is that Tic Tacs
For it is written, thou shalt play but one striker, and one only.
-
No goals in second half this is pretty weak.
-
Weird match weird thread. Has it ever felt flatter to stick 4 goals on and waltz into a semi final? Wonder what it’s like at the ground.
Hardly any chants but for the Carew one.
I was looking forward to sticking a few goals past Liverpool but it's just felt very artificial. Still nothing much we can do about it.
Onto the semi finals and also Southampton.

The commentary I’m watching is like watching Liverpool TV. We’re doing a professional job and getting some miles into a few players legs. Not sure much more we could have expected.
Yeh you’re watching the same as me it appears. This was a no win for us. We’ve not played well but we’ve done more than enough to win by many more than this despite that.
-
No goals in second half this is pretty weak.
I don't think they're trying their hardest...
-
Nyland really has been our best player by a mile. Another superb save
-
I'm not sure we've learned anything tonight that we didn't already know.
-
Trezeguet could have had 4 tonight
-
Trezeguet could have had a hat-trick.
-
Nyland really does look a good keeper all of a sudden. Fair play to him for keeping his head up.
-
One of the worrying thing is that Liverpool have the quality of players coming through... ::)
-
I'm not sure we've learned anything tonight that we didn't already know.
Apart from Nyland being better than we thought?
-
Would have been a nice opportunity for Dean to try a different way of playing.
-
I still think this is going to finish 4-4.
-
Is it getting foggy or is my tele on the blink?

A goal is a goal, so good for Wesley, and I know I'm not his biggest fan.
