Would've kept Trez in instead of AEG but let's say how that goes.

Guess with Targett starting we want an extra body in the middle to cover the ground.

My guess is Grealish wide? Unless he's moving to a 4-4-2 diamond with AEG up front. Either way, a number of us are either going to look quite smart or quite dumb regarding Jack's position by full time!

Be interesting to see much targett getting forward changes our shape.

Harsh on Taylor.

With that sort of line up we are looking for more attacking threat from the fullbacks. Taylor has done ok at times defensively this season, but offers nothing going forward.

I’ve been really impressed with Taylor this year (admittedly my expectations weren’t that high) but going forward he is limited.  Targett coming in makes sense with I expect Nakamba and Hourihane being a bit deeper allowing both full backs to push on and McGinn and Grealish given more freedom to roam.

Post by: danno on September 28, 2019, 02:14:34 PM
I'd have probably played Trezegeut too, but El Ghazi does have a goal and assist to his name so that's probably why he's edged it.v

I reckon AEG is a bit fitter as well. Trez like Jota seems fine after 60 mins.

He's done more than "ok at times defensively", he's been as good as we've needed. He was targeted last week at Arsenal and never gave them a sniff. So much so they abandoned the tactic and tried, with greater success on our right.

I can only imagine Targett has been brought in to match the thugish size of the Burnley attack. Still, at least we'll finally get to see him in action and can make up our own minds. Another week out and he'd have been talked about as the English Roberto Carlos.

I would have thought it was more about the lack of width with the forward players selected that has seen Targett get the nod today. In the modern game your fullbacks are almost your most important players. They need to be able to contribute in both attacking and defensive scenarios.

Taylor has done ok, but I think the time has come to see what the fullback we signed for £14 million can do.
Title: Re: Aston Villa vs Burnley Match Thread

Harsh on Taylor.

I don't think so. No doubt Taylor has done ok this season and not the complete nightmare some (me very much included) thought he might be. He's just no threat going forward and it means we have much less impact down that side. And teams can stop Guilbert. Now they have to consider both full backs a bit more. Tactically, and especially at home this is the right approach.

If we go with a diamond I would rather have Jack at the point of the diamond and AEG on the left.

I wonder if McGinn has actually been pushed slightly to the right hand side? Grealish often drifts left naturally, leaving Anwar free to make runs off Wesley.

Probably isn't like!

Jack wide'ish?

Or McGinn possibly on right of a narrow midfield three with Grealish and El Ghazi. They have two very slow full backs on the turn so we should be trying to get in behind them. McGinn could be ideal for that. Much happier with the team selection 👌

I never blame him for his price tag and look forward to his crosses. Maybe we'll see El Ghazi passing it back every time he gets the ball but this time to somebody that can actually cross. It's his defensive qualities that scare the shit out of me. It's lazy to say he's the right player to play at home unless the opposition don't intent attacking down the left third of the pitch. Somehow I can't see that happening very often.

Happy the Marvelous is in there, somebody will need to break up the fight between Woods and Tyrone. It should be an interesting battle. We can not allow Burnley to bully us today and I think Dean has gone for physical strength ahead of flair.

I can see a Conor goal today. He gets into those spots and he'll be helpful to Wes in the box. Also having a proper set piece taker and a genuine threat from free kicks is a huge asset.

Yeah, I think that is a possibility given that El Ghazi has tended to play wide left much more than on the right. Interesting either way to see how it all fits together.

Pleased for Connor - think he has been unfortunate that his favoured/best position is also that of probably our two best players. I remember Dean talking about how he looks to try and get 3.5 goals on the pitch with his team selections, so that may be a factor in the decision as well.

Too bloody right. Anything to keep Jack away from freekicks and corners can only be a good thing. So many games we've wasted opportunities as we have nobody that can do what Conor does so well.

This is what Burnley do though, concede possession but keep games tight and then pinch a goal from set piece or high ball.

Just adopted the formula Stoke did for many years on prem.

Of course we could try to cling on to a 1-0 but we've created loads today so more goals here if we really want it.

Wes will score today. He just needs to believe because those crosses are there for the taking. The other thing to consider is that he is pulling the Burnley CB’s apart opening up space for our midfielders to get into.

Cynical foul on Jack on the edge of the area, free kick given but no yellow card.

Would have been a red for Barnes, got nowhere near the ball. We finished strong there. Playing with 10 men with Wes I'm afraid. Davis cannot be any worse.

Positives: McGinn outstanding, Nakamba very good, both full backs offering width and quality on ball, Engels assured. Hourihanes quality on ball is creating chances too.

In relative terms though our record signing is way, way down the list of high priced signings at PL level. Not saying he shouldn't be doing more, but when you consider what Everton paid for Iwobi at Everton this season it's not really been a huge mistake or gamble.

Forwards aside, I think Deano could have stumbled on our most effective formation here.

Nakamba and McGinn as the pack dogs in the middle with a little bite, complimented by the cultured feet of Hourihane and Grealish. Targett and Guilbert look way better than our other fullback options too.

That leaves El Ghazi, Trezeguet and Jota to scrap it out for the remaining spot.

Just like last week the warning signs were there.

Had options like Davis to put on to make ball stick upfront or bring on Jota to get some more possession. Or Trez of course for more direct attacks.

Slow to react and I'm afraid you lose points at premier league level.

We're not a bad side and I do think there are three worse teams in prem but yeah we are really naive so far. Can't do the scrappy niggly stuff you need to do in many games to get the three points.

Not a good sign. Think we must pace ourselves a little more smartly. Yes starting games well is important but many prem games are won and lost second half more than first.

Two of them went out to close down the cross and still the ball came in. Just like their first goal.
Shocking  - we need to get the basics right

Every week we do it to ourselves. The tactical changes are poor. The subs are not thought through. And the players aren’t switched on at this level. It’s easy against Rotherham or Millwall. At PL level we have to be better. It’s merciless
