I thought Marvelous might have made the bench but maybe at this stage two games in a week is too much. Still nothing wrong with the sub options overall

Norra lorra defenders on that bench, but who needs them anyway!

No issue with that at all. Hopefully El Ghazi confidence boosted by goal last week so he can be dangerous sub option for us in last 20 minutes.

Pretty much cancelling each other out, our passing game is way better, if we can step the pace up we'll have these, Palace don't look like they can handle fast raids on goal, panic stricken.

I think we're the better side but a mix of palace shit-housing (mostly McArthur) and poor reffing is stopping us from getting on top. They've been given 3-4 very soft free kicks and got away with some fairly agricultural tackling.

We are letting them have way too much of the ball and they are pushing us further and further back. And we are making the same daft individual errors that killed us vs Spurs and Bournemouth.

Well we are away and Palace have been in premier league for many years now....

Expecting us to dominate away and home team to barely cross the halfway line is a bit optimistic I think, didn't happen in the championship.

Get to half time at 0-0 and hopefully get some more fluency in our attack second half. Wesley is back to being a bit out of things today.

We need to stop smashing long cross field passes to our wingers who are too small to deal with them. We are not moving forward as a unit and it’s leaving Wesley completely exposed up front.

I don’t need us to dominate. It would be good if we could just keep the ball for a few minutes and push forward as a group.

Luiz and Taylor received yellows for their first fouls. Meanwhile, SJM has his shirt yanked 5 yards outside the box and nothing..?! Taylor gets stomped late and nothing..?!

Kevin Friend should have his own entry in the Thesaurus as a synonym for blatant and unashamed bias.  As I said earlier - it's not just today - there was a game against Chelsea a few years back and the decisions for Chelsea and against us were just outrageous. I've had his card marked ever since

Palace getting the lion's share of the chances as the home team, take the ref out the equation and we are doing okay, if Deano can get them step up the pace in the 2nd half more sure than ever we can take the 3 points here, need to be sharper at the back, tighter in the middle and rapid up front, we can do this, Palace in my opinion are a classic ponderous Hodgson team.

Come on Villa

I know what you mean but we can't be that poor again. Far too panicky with the ball. I'm hoping that was our poor half. There's plenty to improve and Dean needs to fix it at half time.

It's not easy when four players are eggshells with soft yellows.

Gonna have to bring Hourihane and Elmo on..

That first half was a hard watch

Changes needed

Where's Wesley? Might not be his fault but having none of the ball. Mings looks shakey today, general play very sloppy

The ref is shocking...how is the bias so blatant ?

Anyway, we started brightly enough getting in between their lines and also in behind their defence, but fell away and started to make some sloppy errors. We need to step it up, the three points are there for the taking.

Most of those fouls were caused by ourselves constantly gifting the ball away and getting angry about it. Regarding subs I would definitely make a change now because as it stands a goal for them is inevitable.

Not having Sky, I have to rely on highlights, but does Jack do much dribbling into the area in the Prem? Seems like he sits and ticks things over and leaves the dribbling to the wingers.
He's been dropping deeper this match, not in as advanced a position as he was in the Championship when he was at his most effective. Although on one occasion when he was in a forward position he was blatantly pushed off the ball and he didn't even get a free kick.

We need to hold onto the ball a bit at least and win some FKs. You can still do that with 10 men, many prem teams have done that when down to 10 men at VP down the years and run down the clock well.

Think Boro had Adama sent off after three minutes at VP and still hung on for a 0-0.

Davis coming on which is sensible move.

What does it matter about the other games this season? My comment was specific to this game. We are playing a team that will be in that lower half of the table with us and we have looked awful for most of the game.

And as for your last comment I have no idea what that even means. Clearly my chat with Dean Smith in the US hasn’t stopped me for calling his tactical ability out when needed. So I’ll commend him as needed and criticize when deserved. We have been second best all game against Crystal Palace.

And as for your last comment I have no idea what that even means. Clearly my chat with Dean Smith in the US hasn’t stopped me for calling his tactical ability out when needed. So I’ll commend him as needed and criticize when deserved. We have been second best all game against Crystal Palace.

I just think you're getting a bit above realistic levels. I remember you referencing Dean's bold "we'll attack everyone home and away" comment.

A newly promoted prem team no matter how much money they've spent simply isn't going to do that.

Today will be fantastic backs to the wall point if we hang on. You need those to stay up just as much as comfortable home wins v Everton.

Which isn't happening now as Ayew just scored.

Ouch, just looking at our away run. Arsenal, Norwich (dire there since Lambert left), Man. City, Wolves, Chelsea and Man. United our run up to middle of December. Can't see many points there at all with us struggling to counter attack.

Going to have to stay focused at VP and grind out some wins to keep us away from bottom 3. That's what newly promoted teams usualyl do when they come up in fairness.

This display is so reminiscent of the Villa we all hated the season we went down. Under the cosh from the off, constant mistakes just waiting for their goal to arrive. With 10 men now to get through this will be nothing short of a miracle. The ref hasn’t helped but this has been really dire all round.

Blimey way OTT. We've been competitive in all the games so far so way different to 15/16, just lacking in the final third at times.

Did someone get a little overexcited with their cosy US chat with DS by any chance?

I’m not getting above anything. We haven’t competed. To stay up we will need to compete against sides like Palace who are absolutely nothing special. It would be completely different if this was Man City away or even a side like Leicester.

And frankly you stating that I said DS would attack is making my point for me. We haven’t attacked. And when tried to we gave the ball away cheaply. It’s put us on the back foot from the start. That’s something that we should have improved upon by this point and at this level whoever we play it’s going to kill us. And as much as the ref is shit our players got booked in part through being naive. So DS should be criticized tonight for not being able to counter Palace. That’s for him to learn and improve upon.

I don't know why we're playing so far within ourselves now. Even against Everton I felt we were reactive. Grealish takes a lot of players with him but I don't see much fear in opposition defences scrabbling to cover our other attackers.

Selhurst Park is just a terrible ground for us for whatever reason.

If we played Barca as much in last 30 years we'd probably pick up as many wins (1) as we do when we play Palace.

Never play well there. Even the 1-0 in 2014 was a wonder goal from Benteke and we were battered for most of the game IIRC.

What’s going to really hurt us until January is that the LB spot hasn’t been improved upon and the striker situation. KD isn’t the answer if Wes isn’t playing well or if we just need to change things up. And to buy Targett and find that Taylor is better at PL level is shocking. And now with Targett being injured every team will now focus on that area of our defence much like Championship sides did.

We need to get more streetwise at this level that's one thing I'd agree on. Does feel like the opposition are playing on us being naive atm. If players are on yellows you run and get into tussels with them. Always seems odd to me at VP when a FB for opposition gets booked early and then we hardly run at them for rest of the half.

Palace 11 might not look great but they are a solid and experience team that are tough to score against.

Frustrating loss. West Ham and Arsenal after the break will be hard ones aswell. Think I'm just happy we got a win early on as it took Cardiff until mid October last season to get their first win.

Only Man City and Liverpool have picked up more PL points than Palace in 2019!

This ref is a disgrace, please ask FA for him to not ref us anymore time this season.

New Mark Halsey.

Booked Jack for diving? And disallowed it for that?

this is hard to stomach, but we will see plenty of games like this I'm afraid.

I hope not, it will mean we'll be relegated.

Need to get Jack away from the ref, he's lost it. We don't need him out for three matches aswell.

I knew better than to celebrate. VAR has ruined the season already, not because of that incident but because it's always in the back of your mind. Kill VAR, it's a big pile of utter shit.

It's got fuck all to do with VAR, in fact if VAR was used properly we'd be getting a point. That's 100% down to the ref being a ******.

At first I thought he was mad for not playing advantage, then I thought he was bringing it back for a pen, then I thought it might be for a foul outside the area, then he gives nothing.  He fucked us four times on one incident.

Surely he can book Jack for "diving" and not disallow the goal?   Sorry but that is blatant fucking cheating by Friend who's had it in for us all game.

So one rule for Zaha and a different rule for Jack.

I'm not even sure it was a blatant dive, because i think it was Zaha who flew into the back of Grealish which started to knock him off balance. We didn't gain any advantage from Grealish going down, so surely if The Ref thinks he did dive you carry on play until the ball goes dead and then you book Grealish?
