Looking forward to this one. Hope Big Wes can get a goal.
-
-
Thanks buddy was just going to ask
-
Cheers for that.
-
Kalinic, Guilbert, Engels Mings, Targett, Hourihane, Lansbury, Grealish, Jota, Green, Wesley.
-
Subs: Steer, Bree, Taylor, Hause, Sulliman, Bjarnason, McGinn, O'Hare, Davis, Hepburn-Murphy, Hogan.
-
El Ghazi still injured?
-
No El ghazi (again)?
-
Subs: Steer, Bree, Taylor, Hause, Sulliman, Bjarnason, McGinn, O'Hare, Davis, Hepburn-Murphy, Hogan.
Playing the second half?
-
Have SJM and Jack played in the same half yet?
Also a lot of players got to come into that squad too who are likely to be starters...
Trez
Luiz
A keeper
Another striker
And
Elmo
Kodj
-
Reads like one team for the first half and another team for the second half.
-
Is there anywhere to watch it online?

YouTube link above.

Thanks. I spotted that but didn’t realise YouTube did live streaming so scrolled past.

Is Wes limping or does he always walk like that ?
-
Is Wes limping or does he always walk like that ?
One leg longer than the other.
-
Subs: Steer, Bree, Taylor, Hause, Sulliman, Bjarnason, McGinn, O'Hare, Davis, Hepburn-Murphy, Hogan.
No Konza.
-
Jack Woodward - does he ever think about shutting TFU even for a few seconds?
-
No badges, name or number on Lovre’s shirt
-
Bad touches/passes from Hourihane already.
-
Guilbert looks good
-
Subs: Steer, Bree, Taylor, Hause, Sulliman, Bjarnason, McGinn, O'Hare, Davis, Hepburn-Murphy, Hogan.
No Konza.
El Ghazi?
-
Good goal from Jota, which started with him preventing a misplaced place from going out for a throw.
-
Jota scores........Woodward makes a pun worthy of H&V
-
0-1
-
Jack Woodward - does he ever think about shutting TFU even for a few seconds?
No no, everybody loves him....🤯
-
Nice move for that goal. Jota has looked impressive in the pre season.
-
“Villa’s preseason just got a whole lot Jota’!!
-
Beautiful goal
-
Another goal for wes. Jota looks very useful.
-
Guilbert and Jota look like the real deal
-
2 very good goals, great ball in for the first and good build up to a composed finish for the 2nd.
I'd say this is 7 of the team that will start at spurs, the back 4, Wesley, Jack and Jota.
-
Wes 6 cm difference on one leg? Pretty quick and good movement
-
3cm, I think it was garrincha who had a 6cm difference
-
Some clown leaning forward blocking camera view... move him ffs
-
3cm, I think it was garrincha who had a 6cm difference
Still a lot... he should come to the faroe islands. We regularly have a healer that fixes only short legs... pray and stuff
-
Hou back to his usual... backing out of challenges and misplaced passes
-
Jota is a clever player, he spots the gaps early.
-
We've put 3-4 fantastic balls in behind here.
It's very early but I like the look of Engels, he's very similar to Mings in the calm way he plays.
-
Hourihane has looked awful. Constantly gives the ball away.
-
Playing some lovely football. Really slick and Jack is all over the place tonight. They won’t be playing but Green, Lansbury and Hourihane are the weak links. Jota is ace.
-
Hourihane has looked awful. Constantly gives the ball away.
I was thinking this will be a level too high for him, but it's Walsall and he looks naff.
-
Jack Woodward - does he ever think about shutting TFU even for a few seconds?
No no, everybody loves him....🤯
Just found out he has blocked me on Twitter... probably been to honest back in the days 😂
-
Conor wanting the penalty...try taking it off the beast
-
Great finish from Wes
-
Boom... walk up wait for keeper - gk didn't go for a side , wham top corner... excellent
-
Sloppy play for their goal.
-
Nice finish Walsall...back four and midfield looking like they've hardly played together...which they haven't
-
Very sloppy.
-
Great through ball from Jota for their goal. :-)
-
Not great defending for their goal, but a good finish from Sinclair
-
Wes is looking great
-
Can't the cameraman tell the twat in the white t shirt to move out of the fucking way!!
-
Can't the cameraman tell the twat in the white t shirt to move out of the fucking way!!
I just said the same! I assume he's filming too, probably a bit cramped on that gantry.
-
Would like to have seen Wes shoot there.
-
Can't the cameraman tell the twat in the white t shirt to move out of the fucking way!!
Push him off the gantry. Green is doing my head in.
-
Fantastic finish, 2 each for Wesley and Jota.
-
Highway robbery of the Dick Turpin stylee. We gave them Gary Gardner and just a couple of million quid? Fantastic player.
-
Wtf we’re Blues doing swapping Jota for Gardner?
-
Given the substitutes are currently warming up on the pitch, it doesn’t look like we are going to change the team at half-time. There will probably be a rush of substitutions throughout the second half but it looks like we are sticking with the same side that finished the first half.
-
Highway robbery of the Dick Turpin stylee. We gave them Gary Gardner and just a couple of million quid? Fantastic player.
Jota=bargain of the season!
-
Jota has looked the part in every game he has played, liking the look of Guilbert too, Wesley very promising. Absolutely need a proper DM though, hopefully the Brazilian will be the one.
-
Mings looks flakiest at the back.
Green and Hotlips look substandard elsewhere.
We don't normally muller them, do we?
-
Crying out for a quality DM player - Luiz hopefully??
-
And, since my last post was a little negative: Guilbert, Jota, Engels and Wesley look very good.
-
First watch of the new boys.... impressed by Guilbert and Jota down the right. LB seems good going forward but not sure on what I’ve seen defensively. Wesley looking good but let’s see how he fairs against the big boys first.
Green needs to (at the very least) be loaned out - Jota has done more in a villa shirt in his short career with us.
Be interesting to see how we fair with this Brazilian kid from Man City.... starting to think we might surprise a few this season 🤞🏼
-
Rearrange; chicken headless, for Green except for that one shot.
-
Highway robbery of the Dick Turpin stylee. We gave them Gary Gardner and just a couple of million quid? Fantastic player.
I just hope they haven't kept the receipt.
-
Jota could prove to be bargain of the summer. Wes looks like he’s getting better and more involved. Jack looks as sharp as a tack.
Back 4 looks a little unorganised, but thats to be expected with the new guys settling in.
And green looks out of his depth, even at this level.
-
Jota looks great, Wesley and Gilbert decent (although got done just before their goal).
-
Mings looks flakiest at the back.
Green and Hotlips look substandard elsewhere.
We don't normally muller them, do we?
I disagree on Mings, he's made a couple of mistakes where he was being a bit too casual but he's also stopped everything that's gone near him.
Hourihane has been poor, Green is still very frustrating and Lansbury still has a bit of a habit of admiring the last thing he did rather than getting on with it.
-
Who are we playing the week before the season kicks off, friendly wise please?
-
Rearrange; chicken headless, for Green except for that one shot.
He kissed Len Chac?
-
RB Leipzig I think.
-

Excellent
-
We play football not mind numbing chess these days and I fuckin love it.
-
In action, that kit looks like it’s got a lovely ‘80’s look about it.
-
Unlucky from Green there, good play
-
Green shows he can beat 4th tier defenders
-
We're gonna win the league!
-
Freddy puts some great crosses in
-
Jack, hotlips, Lansbury all look noticeably bigger and fitter. Get the impression the lads have really beasted themselves in preseason.
-

It’s the new shirts. 😂
-
Engles has slotted in seamlessly.
The only reason I know it’s not Hause or Axel is because he’s white.
-
Green... not so much imo
-
Bear in mind we are still playing really in third gear. Players don’t want to get hurt and this is still a training exercise. So for us to be this fluid and comfortable on the ball while working in a lot of players with players yet to come in boss’s so well for the season ahead. It’s a long one and it will take a few weeks for the regular starting XI to emerge. Love what I am seeing though right now.
-
Grealish looks very fit, covering back at the speed of light a couple of times I’ve noticed.
-
70 mins gone and no subs yet. Would at least expect Hause and SJM to get some game time tonight.
-
Engles has slotted in seamlessly.

He looks a very good player on this showing (I know it's not great opposition but he's looked very comfortable).
-
Engels style of play reminds me of Mellberg.
Green is a quality or two below his teamates sadly, he needs to play a full season at Championship level in the coming year.
-
Engels and Guilbert do look very good. Very assured on the ball.
-
Engels stops the angle... jeez
-
Bad timing that last post. I take it back.
-
Have we made a sub?
-
Bad timing that last post. I take it back.
Dean is following this thread
-
RHM looks like he's sprouted a few inches.
-
You'll never beat the Villa!
-
I see we still have this absolute obsession of taking a short corner, even when the receiver is tightly marked, i really hope we dont do that in the Premier.
-
Tell fatty white shirt to get out of the fucking way camera wuss.
-
RHM looks good.
-
RHM looks good.
Scared to shoot
-
And Bjarni has looked imposing
-
Green suffers from that too.
-
Looks like the 2nd XI have been told to get out there and fight for places the way they have come out the blocks. RHM looking particularly good.
-
There is no real flair now the stiffs have come on.
-
Jack, hotlips, Lansbury all look noticeably bigger and fitter. Get the impression the lads have really beasted themselves in preseason.
It’s the new shirts. 😂
Possibly!
-
Hogan still shit.
-
RHM has looked very good but needs to be more confident in front of goal (hopefully that will come). There was a definite drop in quality after the changes and Hogan really doesn't offer enough, I can see how he scored a good number of goals in the championship but he's nothing like good enough for where we are now because he's not strong enough, quick enough or tricky enough to give decent defenders any problems.
-
Pretty impressive display albeit against moderate opposition. Most of the starters played well; of the replacements, RHM, Bjarnason and Davis did okay.
-
Very good first half and I thought the second lot who came on did ok bearing in mind they only had 20 minutes.
-
Very good first half and I thought the second lot who came on did ok bearing in mind they only had 20 minutes.
Yup. It was also encouraging to see how we tried to play. A decent workout.
-
Can't the cameraman tell the twat in the white t shirt to move out of the fucking way!!
I seem to remember he did the same last year!
-
Thought the Russian looked lively
-
Kalinic still looks ropey, even though he had nothing to do. Gilbert and Targett seem very competent and get forward really well, Tyrone is just imperious, Engels looks confident and reliable. Hourihane, Lansbury and Green are the weak links and won't be playing anyway. Wesley, Jack and Jota carried the midfield and were excellent going forwards. Great workout and if I could ask one thing; anyone who talks to Dean about his thoughts, ask him what the hold up is with the Douglas transfer. Ask a journalist to ask a question instead of getting their sources through H and V eh?
-
RB Leipzig I think.
Many thanks Ads, I honestly couldn't think who is was. I would hope that dean will start with his strongest side. I hope that includes Douglas.
-
The only problem with the Luiz transfer is the fucking impatience of some fans.
-
Such a shame that Green's dribble and shot didn't result in a goal. Might have done wonders for his confidence. As it was, RHM came on and really got involved.
-
Without a doubt pick of the new bunch was Jota. He and Jack have already got a great understanding. And talking of Jack, just simply a class above everybody else on the park
-
Wes is pretty damn good
-

Honestly didn't think Jota was that impressive as he gave the ball away quite a bit and can't really see him starting. Think the back four will be the first choice come the start of the season and thought the full-backs looked more comfortable going forwards than our other options in those positions. Thought Guilbert started a bit shakily, but visibly grew in confidence as the game went on. Thought Wesley was pretty decent tonight and held the ball up well.
Looked like a team coming together tonight. Desperately need a defensive midfielder as Hourihane isn't going to cut it there in the top flight. Need a step up in opposition to get us ready for the start of the season.
-
My Nose mate is greatly enjoying our tales of how great this new signing of ours is; Jota.
Still, they got Craig's slower brother, so it's not all bad ;D
-
Jota. He looks decent.
Gilbert. Excellent.
Wesley. Wow!
Wolves - They'm doin a Fulham aye they!
-
I'm impressed with all the new guys, third game into pre-season.
Engels looks good and assured. Freddy looks like he's been playing for Villa for longer than pre-season (good link up play with Jota). Wesley links play well and wants to score (nobody was taking that pen from him). Targett was good but not as effective as Freddy, but that maybe due to not having an understanding with Green yet. Jota played well, took his goals well, assisted well and generally linked up play well. He just needs to avoid giving the ball away especially when not under pressure. A good workout. Well done Villa.
-
All I’ve been able to get from the thread is that Jota and Wes got two each. Who got the other one?
-

Jack got the fifth.

-
Saw the first half, we're zipping the ball around very nicely.
Already a partnership between Jota and Grealish, little triangle passes down the right are opening up space for Freddy to bomb forward. Big Wes also getting involved in that.
Will be very interesting to see what on other side El Ghazi getting fit and Trezeguet added to the squad (I assume he still has a week or two holiday given he was playing in AFCON two weeks ago). One more forward and we'll be well set in final third.
-
Fucking useless site won't let me post a picture properly.
It was gonna be great, honest.

I didn't think Angela was a passenger tonight, I actually thought he looked pretty good.
-
May have missed it but have heard a fair bit about most new signings playing but how did Engels come across on debut ?
-
I didn't think Angela was a passenger tonight, I actually thought he looked pretty good.
I think he’s been basically rubbish since we bought him and obviously injured for longish periods too
so I’m not a fan of him at all and if we could move him on that would be great
However having said all that anyone saying he wasn’t any good tonight knows jack shit about football and just plods on with their set agenda because he was the best I’ve seen him
still want him gone but like you thought he was pretty decent tonight
-
I'm no fan either John, but credit where it's due.
-
Yep, he did quite well in a pre-season friendly against 4th tier opposition. I'm being facetious because he contributed to a very good hour or so from us but it has to be put into perspective.
-
What struck me with what I saw was just how quickly we were moving the ball around. Very impressive.
-
May have missed it but have heard a fair bit about most new signings playing but how did Engels come across on debut ?
He’d have been close to my MOM. Very tidy with the ball, negated the threat of their big man in the air and carried possession forward well.
Thought we did very well, albeit against weak opposition.
Full backs both got forward well, Jota and Jack had a fine understanding. Wes looked ok.
-
May have missed it but have heard a fair bit about most new signings playing but how did Engels come across on debut ?
Hard to tell as Walsall didn't pose much of a threat, but he did the basics well, looked pretty comfortable on the ball and seemed comfortable alongside Mings.

As i said earlier, he played much better than we've seen before but he still has a little flurry of activity and then thinks his bit is done and stops. It wasn't as blatant today so I hope he's being coached to get more involved but it was still there, particularly when we'd got our 3rd and were coasting a bit.

I'd give him top Marx.

Agree with all that, Tom; particularly about Jota: he's good, but a little loose with the ball.
Ange played better than I remember him, and he and Hourihane (and possibly Green) will get game time this season, if the squad stays largely as it is, because of injuries and fatigue.

As we speak, it’s likely that one of Lansbury/BB would make our 18. Not ideal and by the close of the window, I hope that isn’t the case. Moving into the season, we need more than 18 and for that reason, I would be happy to keep one of them, preferably Lansbury.
I don’t think Green has what it takes for the PL and needs to go out on loan with a view to a permanent move somewhere. I’m looking forward to seeing a few offloaded over the next 2 weeks.
-
I'd personally keep Green in the squad. We may need him if we pick up any injuries and besides, he may improve his game with better players around him. Same for the Russian.

More than happy to keep Rushian in the squad, he reminds me a bit of Dwight gale the way he backs in and gives defenders problems in aerial challenges. He’s pretty nifty on the floor as well.
For me, I’ve seen nothing from green over the past couple of seasons to suggest he can step up. His loan at Portsmouth hardly set the world on fire either. I think with the players we have and the possibility of another wide player joining, Green won’t make the 18. He certainly needs to go out on loan and personally, I’d accept a sensible offer for him. I say this reluctantly because he loves the club and loves it here but for both parties, a move would probably be best all round.

I agree John. He's always had a decent pass but he's never shown any consistency or more importantly the desire and attitude to do well. I still doubt he's got it in him to turn his Villa career round, but certainly he looked decent last night.
-
Did hogan come on or is he part deal with cash for Maupay ?
-
Ignoring the actual scoreline and quality of the opposition, these games are important for the team to gel with all the new players. They all seem to be settling well, creating partnerships and it’s encouraging to see Guilbert, Jota and Wes involved in the goals. It’s still early days but the signs are promising and there’s a lot more hard work to be done before we see the full potential of this developing group of players.
-
Did hogan come on or is he part deal with cash for Maupay ?
He came on with all the others on 70 minutes and had a goal disallowed for offside.
-
A good run out for the boys I enjoyed watching it.
-

He came on with all the others on 70 minutes and had a goal disallowed for offside.
Which in fairness he took very well and it highlighted what his game is all about, playing off the shoulder of the last man. He just hasn't done it enough.
-
Last 2 friendlies; Wes on the pitch 105mins, Villa score 6, he scores 2 and assists 2. Wes off the pitch 75mins Villa score none.
It is fair to say that he had better players around him for the 60 mins last night vs the last 30 mins, but even so....
-
Decent game last night with barely any bad performances from our lot.
One player that did impress me was RHM when he came on. Looked a different player. Confident, good touch (apart from the wayward shot) and looked /hungry/eager. Great to see him finally blossoming.
Green on the otherhand still continues to infuriate me with his lack of awareness, plenty times last night he could've run into gaps to receive a through ball but just stood out wide slowing the whole thing down. Then the one time he did look like he'd got some belief he bursts in and hits the bar. He HAS to do that far more often or he's going to end up a lower league player who never reaches his potential.
-
From watching on my phone last night
Kalinic - Really hard to judge as he had literally nothing to do - could do nothing about their goal
Guilbert - Not a lot to measure on defensively due to opposition but his storming runs down the wing will stretch a lot of teams this year - look a great find and already looks like the starter for the position
Engels - composed and likes to play the ball
Mings - as expected - majestic
Targett - Nothing really to report other than seemingly steady - did not look threatening going forward but Green does not help with indecision at times
Jack - walked it - great understanding with any player around him - lovely classy goal
Conor - played a lot deeper but did the unspectacular work well
Angela - Tidy, nice touches and kept momentum going
Green - one glimpse of star quality surrounded by the usual lot of "meh" more should really be expected - cannot see him getting a regular bench seat unless we have a injury crisis
Jota - MOTM - I have likened him to David Silva for his ghosting in - the first goal was classis of this. Starts the move off in his own half then appears from nowhere to knock in the cross - already has a great understanding and awareness of his players around him. Call the Police as we totally robbed the dogshite and could be the signing of them all.
Wesley - His movement and power is superb - his goal was great evidence of slipping off the last man to be found telepathically by Jota and the first time finish was class. Took his pen with skill and conviction. This could be another that was well researched by the club.
Subs
RHM - looked lively
Davis - Not a wide player
Hogan - did not notice he came on until disallowed goal (in fairness the single camera position did not help track his movements)
SJM - Looked busy but no threat going forward
Sulliman - no real test
Hause - as Sulliman
Bree - Nothing of note
Taylor - as Bree
Birkar - kept the flow going well I thought
Obviously Walsall huffed and puffed but were no real test for most of our players. But what we did - especially first 70 minutes was pretty decent
Interesting to hear a blog on You Tube by 2 Walsall fans who said we were light years ahead - always nice
-
Am I correct in thinking that there is only the match against Charlton and then the trip to Leipzig before the season starts? If so I am a little worried that we may be undercooked regarding the opposition we will be facing in the PL. Yes last night was 70 minutes of running around but defensively we were not challenged at all and the attackers were not facing and having to manipulate decent defenders. Hope I am wrong but just have this nagging fear that initially the step up will be a bit of a shock to the system for some of them.
-
fredm, you should just grow a pair. Have some faith, these are not schoolboys coming up against seasoned pro's, it's just the Premier League for christs sake.

I think there is bound to be a bit of a step-up issue initially. We'll deal with it, though, because Terry can add that much-needed experience and Smith seems sensible enough to be able to anticipate it and manage it. We've also hired a number of experienced internationals who will know all about the gap.
-
Cheers Dr. B
-
Only watched it on the YouTube channel but was very impressed. Gilbert looks the real deal. Thought RHM looked very good also when he came on.
-
I was pleased with the whole game.
Hepburn-Murphy has filled out more by the look of it.
Sadly, I don't think Green or O'Hare are going to cut it with us (I hope I'm wrong though)

I think Fred makes a very fair point. When we face Spurs, for instance, they will have warmed up against, and beaten, some of the top teams in Europe. Leipzig are a step up but I also think at least one more top level pre-season opponent would have been better preparation for what's to come.
-
As much as i really want him to succeed, Green would have been more suited playing for Walsall against us the other night
-
There was a horrible clash of heads between Bree and the Walsall lad. I was pleasantly surprised that they both got up so quickly.
