Have SJM and Jack played in the same half yet?

Also a lot of players got to come into that squad too who are likely to be starters...

Trez
Luiz
A keeper
Another striker

And
Elmo
Kodj

2 very good goals, great ball in for the first and good build up to a composed finish for the 2nd.

I'd say this is 7 of the team that will start at spurs, the back 4, Wesley, Jack and Jota.

We've put 3-4 fantastic balls in behind here.

It's very early but I like the look of Engels, he's very similar to Mings in the calm way he plays.

Playing some lovely football. Really slick and Jack is all over the place tonight.  They won’t be playing but Green, Lansbury and Hourihane are the weak links. Jota is ace.

Given the substitutes are currently warming up on the pitch, it doesn’t look like we are going to change the team at half-time. There will probably be a rush of substitutions throughout the second half but it looks like we are sticking with the same side that finished the first half.

First watch of the new boys.... impressed by Guilbert and Jota down the right. LB seems good going forward but not sure on what I’ve seen defensively. Wesley looking good but let’s see how he fairs against the big boys first.
Green needs to (at the very least) be loaned out - Jota has done more in a villa shirt in his short career with us.
Be interesting to see how we fair with this Brazilian kid from Man City.... starting to think we might surprise a few this season 🤞🏼

Jota could prove to be bargain of the summer. Wes looks like he’s getting better and more involved. Jack looks as sharp as a tack.
Back 4 looks a little unorganised, but thats to be expected with the new guys settling in.
And green looks out of his depth, even at this level.

I disagree on Mings, he's made a couple of mistakes where he was being a bit too casual but he's also stopped everything that's gone near him.

Hourihane has been poor, Green is still very frustrating and Lansbury still has a bit of a habit of admiring the last thing he did rather than getting on with it.

Bear in mind we are still playing really in third gear. Players don’t want to get hurt and this is still a training exercise. So for us to be this fluid and comfortable on the ball while working in a lot of players with players yet to come in boss’s so well for the season ahead. It’s a long one and it will take a few weeks for the regular starting XI to emerge. Love what I am seeing though right now.

RHM has looked very good but needs to be more confident in front of goal (hopefully that will come). There was a definite drop in quality after the changes and Hogan really doesn't offer enough, I can see how he scored a good number of goals in the championship but he's nothing like good enough for where we are now because he's not strong enough, quick enough or tricky enough to give decent defenders any problems.

Kalinic still looks ropey, even though he had nothing to do.  Gilbert and Targett seem very competent and get forward really well,  Tyrone is just imperious, Engels looks confident and reliable.  Hourihane, Lansbury and Green are the weak links and won't be playing anyway.  Wesley, Jack and Jota carried the midfield and were excellent going forwards.  Great workout and if I could ask one thing; anyone who talks to Dean about his thoughts, ask him what the hold up is with the Douglas transfer.  Ask a journalist to ask a question instead of getting their sources through H and V eh?

Such a shame that Green's dribble and shot didn't result in a goal.  Might have done wonders for his confidence.  As it was, RHM came on and really got involved.

Without a doubt pick of the new bunch was Jota.  He and Jack have already got a great understanding. And talking of Jack, just simply a class above everybody else on the park

Honestly didn't think Jota was that impressive as he gave the ball away quite a bit and can't really see him starting.  Think the back four will be the first choice come the start of the season and thought the full-backs looked more comfortable going forwards than our other options in those positions.  Thought Guilbert started a bit shakily, but visibly grew in confidence as the game went on.  Thought Wesley was pretty decent tonight and held the ball up well.

Looked like a team coming together tonight.  Desperately need a defensive midfielder as Hourihane isn't going to cut it there in the top flight.  Need a step up in opposition to get us ready for the start of the season.

Still, they got Craig's slower brother, so it's not all bad  ;D

I'm impressed with all the new guys, third game into pre-season.
Engels looks good and assured. Freddy looks like he's been playing for Villa for longer than pre-season (good link up play with Jota). Wesley links play well and wants to score (nobody was taking that pen from him). Targett was good but not as effective as Freddy, but that maybe due to not having an understanding with Green yet. Jota played well, took his goals well, assisted well and generally linked up play well. He just needs to avoid giving the ball away especially when not under pressure. A good workout. Well done Villa.

Saw the first half, we're zipping the ball around very nicely.

Already a partnership between Jota and Grealish, little triangle passes down the right are opening up space for Freddy to bomb forward. Big Wes also getting involved in that.

Will be very interesting to see what on other side El Ghazi getting fit and Trezeguet added to the squad (I assume he still has a week or two holiday given he was playing in AFCON two weeks ago). One more forward and we'll be well set in final third.

I think he’s been basically rubbish since we bought him and obviously injured for longish periods too
so I’m not a fan of him at all and if we could move him on that would be great

However having said all that anyone saying he wasn’t any good tonight knows jack shit about football and just plods on with their set agenda because he was the best I’ve seen him

still want him gone but like you thought he was pretty decent tonight

Yep, he did quite well in a pre-season friendly against 4th tier opposition.  I'm being facetious because he contributed to a very good hour or so from us but it has to be put into perspective.

He’d have been close to my MOM. Very tidy with the ball, negated the threat of their big man in the air and carried possession forward well.

Thought we did very well, albeit against weak opposition.

Full backs both got forward well, Jota and Jack had a fine understanding. Wes looked ok.

Hard to tell as Walsall didn't pose much of a threat, but he did the basics well, looked pretty comfortable on the ball and seemed comfortable alongside Mings.

As i said earlier, he played much better than we've seen before but he still has a little flurry of activity and then thinks his bit is done and stops. It wasn't as blatant today so I hope he's being coached to get more involved but it was still there, particularly when we'd got our 3rd and were coasting a bit.

Agree with all that, Tom; particularly about Jota: he's good, but a little loose with the ball.
Ange played better than I remember him, and he and Hourihane (and possibly Green) will get game time this season, if the squad stays largely as it is, because of injuries and fatigue.

As we speak, it’s likely that one of Lansbury/BB would make our 18.  Not ideal and by the close of the window, I hope that isn’t the case.  Moving into the season, we need more than 18 and for that reason, I would be happy to keep one of them, preferably Lansbury.

I don’t think Green has what it takes for the PL and needs to go out on loan with a view to a permanent move somewhere.  I’m looking forward to seeing a few offloaded over the next 2 weeks.

More than happy to keep Rushian in the squad, he reminds me a bit of Dwight gale the way he backs in and gives defenders problems in aerial challenges.  He’s pretty nifty on the floor as well.

For me, I’ve seen nothing from green over the past couple of seasons to suggest he can step up. His loan at Portsmouth hardly set the world on fire either.  I think with the players we have and the possibility of another wide player joining, Green won’t make the 18.  He certainly needs to go out on loan and personally, I’d accept a sensible offer for him.  I say this reluctantly because he loves the club and loves it here but for both parties, a move would probably be best all round.

I agree John.  He's always had a decent pass but he's never shown any consistency or more importantly the desire and attitude to do well.  I still doubt he's got it in him to turn his Villa career round, but certainly he looked decent last night.

Ignoring the actual scoreline and quality of the opposition, these games are important for the team to gel with all the new players. They all seem to be settling well, creating partnerships and it’s encouraging to see Guilbert, Jota and Wes involved in the goals. It’s still early days but the signs are promising and there’s a lot more hard work to be done before we see the full potential of this developing group of players.

Which in fairness he took very well and it highlighted what his game is all about, playing off the shoulder of the last man.  He just hasn't done it enough.

Last 2 friendlies; Wes on the pitch 105mins, Villa score 6, he scores 2 and assists 2. Wes off the pitch 75mins Villa score none.
It is fair to say that he had better players around him for the 60 mins last night vs the last 30 mins, but even so....

Decent game last night with barely any bad performances from our lot.

One player that did impress me was RHM when he came on. Looked a different player. Confident, good touch (apart from the wayward shot) and looked /hungry/eager. Great to see him finally blossoming.

Green on the otherhand still continues to infuriate me with his lack of awareness, plenty times last night he could've run into gaps to receive a through ball but just stood out wide slowing the whole thing down. Then the one time he did look like he'd got some belief he bursts in and hits the bar. He HAS to do that far more often or he's going to end up a lower league player who never reaches his potential.

From watching on my phone last night

Kalinic - Really hard to judge as he had literally nothing to do - could do nothing about their goal

Guilbert - Not a lot to measure on defensively due to opposition but his storming runs down the wing will stretch a lot of teams this year - look a great find and already looks like the starter for the position

Engels - composed and likes to play the ball

Mings - as expected - majestic

Targett - Nothing really to report other than seemingly steady - did not look threatening going forward but Green does not help with indecision at times

Jack - walked it - great understanding with any player around him - lovely classy goal

Conor - played a lot deeper but did the unspectacular work well

Angela - Tidy, nice touches and kept momentum going

Green - one glimpse of star quality surrounded by the usual lot of "meh" more should really be expected - cannot see him getting a regular bench seat unless we have a injury crisis

Jota - MOTM - I have likened him to David Silva for his ghosting in - the first goal was classis of this. Starts the move off in his own half then appears from nowhere to knock in the cross - already has a great understanding and awareness of his players around him. Call the Police as we totally robbed the dogshite and could be the signing of them all.

Wesley - His movement and power is superb - his goal was great evidence of slipping off the last man to be found telepathically by Jota and the first time finish was class. Took his pen with skill and conviction. This could be another that was well researched by the club.

Subs

RHM - looked lively
Davis - Not a wide player
Hogan - did not notice he came on until disallowed goal (in fairness the single camera position did not help track his movements)
SJM - Looked busy but no threat going forward
Sulliman - no real test
Hause - as Sulliman
Bree - Nothing of note
Taylor - as Bree
Birkar - kept the flow going well I thought

Obviously Walsall huffed and puffed but were no real test for most of our players. But what we did - especially first 70 minutes was pretty decent

Interesting to hear a blog on You Tube by 2 Walsall fans who said we were light years ahead - always nice

Am I correct in thinking that there is only the match against Charlton and then the trip to Leipzig before the season starts?  If so I am a little worried that we may be undercooked regarding the opposition we will be facing in the PL.  Yes last night was 70 minutes of running around but defensively we were not challenged at all and the attackers were not facing and having to manipulate decent defenders.  Hope I am wrong but just have this nagging fear that initially the step up will be a bit of a shock to the system for some of them.

I think there is bound to be a bit of a step-up issue initially. We'll deal with it, though, because Terry can add that much-needed experience and Smith seems sensible enough to be able to anticipate it and manage it. We've also hired a number of experienced internationals who will know all about the gap.

I think Fred makes a very fair point. When we face Spurs, for instance, they will have warmed up against, and beaten,  some of the top teams in Europe.  Leipzig are a step up but I also think at least one more top level pre-season opponent would have been better preparation for what's to come.
